shirow Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 Well on reflection, I think we should all go down the Winchester, have a nice cold pint and wait for all this to blow over. How's that for a slice of fried gold? Amen
xarathos Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 All I'm gonna say is the more I see people mock gamergate the more credible it ends up looking by comparison. And with that I'm gonna duck back out of this thread; avoiding this conversation is why I'm here and not on tumblr.
Taskmaster Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 This Gamergate thing, I never heard of it until I saw this thread. Well on reflection, I think we should all go down the Winchester, have a nice cold pint and wait for all this to blow over. How's that for a slice of fried gold? One of my favorite movies.
Dr. Thang Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 This Gamergate thing, I never heard of it until I saw this thread. Wow, you were one lucky lucky bastard, I'm so sorry we ruined that for you.
shirow Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 This Gamergate thing, I never heard of it until I saw this thread. Wow, you were one lucky lucky bastard, I'm so sorry we ruined that for you. I don't think a lot of french people know this website and I didn't knew it. (Actually It was the same with nexus 's reputation....) I was just lurking mods not communicating. I'm was lucky about these two but I had one problem. I used to play league of legend... ( a bit off topic )
Grave Sevolillie Posted November 1, 2014 Posted November 1, 2014 Much like Taskmaster I had not heard of this till this morning. Opened up my bbc news app and bang first thing i see is gamergate (why cant the news be more happy instead of breaking news more bad stuff happens). Now i wish i could just forget the stupidity of people. Gaming is supposed to be a outlet away from the real world one where we unite to just have fun and leave the bs of the real world behind.
Dr. Thang Posted November 1, 2014 Posted November 1, 2014 Opened up my bbc news app and bang first thing i see is gamergate (why cant the news be more happy instead of breaking news more bad stuff happens). Think of it this way, the reason the news is so dark is because things are going so well these days. We have less crime and war and poverty and hunger today than at any point in history, so the news covers all the bad shit happening because it's more unusual and shocking than it used to be. But here's someone who explains it better than I could: So technically, the fact that the news is full of horrible stuff is proof that society is on the right track. Sorry if this is a little (way) off topic, I just feel like people should know that the world isn't as depressing as it seems sometimes.

The_Slice Posted November 1, 2014 Posted November 1, 2014 What I don't get about Gamergate is if the movement is concerned about games journalism ethics then why bother with Anita Sarkeesian or Zoe Quinn at all? And why run Jenn Frank out of games journalism?

And why run Jenn Frank out of games journalism? You're under the assumption that this is really about ethics in gaming journalism like they keep saying?
Guest corespore Posted November 1, 2014 Posted November 1, 2014 If they stopped screaming that playing games makes men hate women 99% of the GG supporters would go back to gaming. Most gamers couldn't give a crap about journalistic integrity and most feminists couldn't care less about people playing video games. But when you turn on the news or go to Twitter and all you see is how bad gamers are and they are "dead" then it tend to get them pissed. All the games media has to do is stop with their campaign of drama against their own F-ing customer base this whole thing would die in a couple of days. And what's worse people like Anita have co-opted this and made it about feminism and has spun this whole thing to be an attack on women. This could have been a constructive discussion at first but at this point i doubt anything good will come out of this if/when it finally ends.

It's more that dogmatic and more or less fantical people making unsupported and generalizing claims usually rally a lot of people who have otherwise nothing to do with "#Gamergate", simply because of the absurdity of such claims. Secondly - things change over time and what was once one thing can turn into another thing. So while the origin of #Gamergate might have been problems with the game "journalism" - scopes change.

So what has it evolved into ethics in games journalism and prodding people you don't agree with? I am willing to admit a large amount of ignorance for parts of gamergate for example I've had it explained to me that Zoe Quinn slept with a game journalist and so that's why she is getting heat. And I'm still not sure why Jenn Frank got so much crap from people.

Zoe Quinn says she is being attacked for being a woman. The three people pushing this entire debacle have painted this as gamers attacking women and nothing more. Just watch any new report on the subject, the one thing they keep repeating over and over is this is a war of the sexes and it's a war against women.

I've heard Anita say it can renforce existing perceptions of women but not actually change someone to hating women. I suppose from their point of view it is an attack on them because they are women even if they are wrong and that doesn't make it OK to say it's against women only. Why is Wu being targeted? Mind you I still don't get with Quinn is being targeted really.
Guest corespore Posted November 1, 2014 Posted November 1, 2014 ^ They aren't being targeted, they are claiming to be targeted. Brianna Wu was caught faking her own harassment and merely brushed it off as being satirical.
The_Slice Posted November 1, 2014 Posted November 1, 2014 But Anita et al are being targeted to some degree. Anyway, at least I understand some of the issues better now.
Chaos63 Posted November 1, 2014 Posted November 1, 2014 Reality check: actual gamers don't give a shit about any of this. Most folks who sign off on this are those two-hours-a-week types. Owning a motorcycle doesn't make you a biker, voting doesn't make you a politician, and finishing Super Mario doesn't make you a gamer. Period.
