Final Fantasy XIII PC Port review

Yeah, don't waste your money.

I played it (on a friend's computer, one of those people who buy EVERY game no matter how bad it sucks) and in my opinion? It's possibly the worst port ever. Worse than Dark Souls, worse than any other PC port. And Final fantasy VIII was a pretty shoddy port, this is even worse.

It's locked to 30 fps for cutscenes and 60 fps in game and rendered at 720p, I mean you have to play at 1280 by 720 (although there's apparently now a fix made by a modder) and it's just terrible. The controls are obviously for 360 controllers, with the keyboard having a nonsensical layout. The stupidest addition ever and I mean not just "huh, why did they do that?" I mean "fuck you this is actually awful" is the fact that the ESC key doesn't just go back but closes the game entirely. It's completely insurmountable as a layout, there are almost no rebindable keys, so either use a controller or use the frustrating layout.

The cutscenes are in 720p as well and you can't really upscale them and considering the amount of cutscenes in the game, it's pretty horrible to watch through them. The cutscenes use 'bink video' as the codec, completely inexcusable. Just so badly encoded that we noticed stuttering during cutscene play. 26GB of the whopping 50GB download for this game is cinematics, that's how many there are.

The gameplay is okay for the time of the game, but they did nothing to change the game for PC, even the settings are pretty non existent. You get AA, but it doesn't help with the resolution if we're honest. One plus here is that the 60fps rarely drops, even on my friends relatively mid range card, which is a GTX 750, no OC.

To sum it up, if you're a final fantasy fan, even the most casual of fans will boycott this terrible port. It's frustrating, badly ported, blurry and jaggy. There are no more words to describe it, it's just that bad. I don't usually review things but man... I'm not even a big FF fan and I feel cheated, I didn't even play my own purchased copy either and I still feel like i've been cheated.

I'm a Final Fantasy fan, but not a hardcore fan.  I only started playing their games at FF7.  I've played almost every FF game since, but did not like FF13.  FF7, FF11, FF12 and FF14 are really the only ones I really liked a lot.  Anything that becomes a part 2 like FFXIII-2, I wouldn't touch.  Not everything from Square Enix is gold, especially these days.  I do have hope for FF15 and will be buying it, but if there are any issues with it, I'll never pre-order again.

Sorry to hear about your experience.  As I get older, I tend to purchase only games I really love and not worry about 9/10 of the games out there.  You end up enjoying what you have a lot more and finding what has the best replay value.  Shop smart friend.  When in doubt, just wait for reviews and do some research before dropping coin and being disappointed.

Fact is I didn't pay for it because I played it around one of my friend's houses. He buys almost every game out on steam, because he has nothing to do with his extra income (moving out of his mother's house might be a start XD) so I save a lot of money by playing any new games around his to see if they're good or not. This one is just an abomination.

I'm a FF fan, but not hardcore, I've played them all at least once but I don't go through the trouble of knowing everything or doing trivia or that crap. I didn't like X-2, XI, XIII or XIV, because mmorpg games aren't really final fantasy imo. Yeah, FF7 is the only pc one i'll play now, mostly because of the massive modding community.

It's a shame that two just awful sequels are to follow. Even XIV was broken when they first released it, why can't square-enix learn how to develop for PCs?

Oh and on side note i don't buy crappy console ports. If i do buy them and say i don't care i just want to play them these lazy stupid devs and publishers keep porting crappy console ports.

This need to be stopped by any self respected PC user BOYCOT lazy crappy console ports.

I remember when I was a kid playing FFVIII. I never finished it. I always regretted that. One day, years later, I picked up Dissidia  for PSP, and having used Squall as a character, and hearing that familiar music once again, I decided to play FFVIII once again. Apparently, I've changed as a gamer. Because within 2 hours, I was already hating the game. For some reason, and to this day I cannot explain why, I stuck through to the end, and I beat that game. Hated every minute of it, and I was glad to finally wash my hands of what I once believed to be a good game. I considered it the single worst Final Fantasy game ever made. ...Then FFXIII came along. I tried to stick with it, but I failed. It was just too horrible. I hated every second even more than FFVIII, and I decided to rage quit because I couldn't take it anymore. I remember making a joke to myself as I was playing. It was just a joke. I didn't actually mean it. I joked that Final Fantasy 1 on the NES is probably better. I had never played the original final fantasy, so I didn't know. Well, months after rage quitting FFXIII, I did play FF1, the NES version. I played it all the way through. The game is filled with horrible bugs that make the Triple A titles of today that crash at launch look pristine by comparison. It was a very frustrating game to play through. ...But it was still better than Final Fantasy 13.

The worst things about the PC port aren't the game itself, it's just the bugs, the terrible shoddy port. Badly encoded videos locked at 30 fps, bad controls that make you use a 360 controller like a console player. An esc key that literally exits and more. The game is pretty average, mediocre at best but the development that went into this port is what lets it down for me. There are two sequels, will they be cut and paste ports? We'll find out.

I was hoping for an upgrade, not half-ass-age. Well, no point in getting the PC version until my PS3 blows up.

And i for one liked 13. Not as good as 12, and not nearly as good as 9, but still pretty good.

I wonder how long until i'll be ran out of the internet for not hating Dragon Age 2, Final Fantasy XIII, Resident Evil 6, and really not seeing what the big deal about ME3's ending was

I'm glad that I haven't pre-ordered it.
I'm a FF fans too, but seeing most of FF in PC are a bad port, I rather wait for a sale, so I didn't regret it.
But geez, most of the steam store review is negative and most of them voted as not helpful, although they are just saying the fact.
It's seems some people can't accept the fact that there is a flaw in their favorite games...

Possibly the only good part I could think of. The game is pretty simply made, it probably rife for exploiting so you could mod it. FFVII and VIII were both highly moddable. Although, you don't get any free rain over the game's direction so mods would probably be wasted.

You know this is hypocritical right? You do play Skyrim on the PC don't you? Skyrim by itself is full of unfixed bugs, and porting it to PC only makes it worse.

FF1,2,3,4,5,7,10,x-2, Tactics, Tactics Advance.

Never played any other and never will. The series has gone downhill fast over the years even a non hardcore FF fan can see that. The plots, the characters, the gameplay...it just all sucks donkey balls now. Oh well, you milked a franchise to death that's what happens. Just like COD, MOH, SF, RE, and many many others.

Agreed, I already played FF origins(1&2), 3(on ipad), 4,5,6,7,8,9,10,X-2 International+Last Story,12, Tactics, Chrystal Chronicle (on NDSL). Although the only FF that I beat is only 7, tactics, and Chrystal Chronicle,

8 (stuck in ultimecia castle, FU**ING TONBERRY!!!), 9 (stuck in the last place because "unreadable disc").

I don't know why, but the feel when I played newer FF games, didn't hit me as hard as those 7,8,9.

IMHO, the FF series goes downhill after Hironobu Sakaguchi left SquareEnix.

Maybe the only JRPG that I still look for is Dragon Quest/Warrior series, and on waiting for Suikoden 6..... still waiting...

And Kingdom Hearts Series (although it's more action RPG, with hack and slash)

Are you for real or what?

First of all Elder Scroll is long running series started on PC latest real Elder Scroll was made for PC was Morrowind im huge fan of Elder Scroll.

Secondly it's one of the few solo RPG games where your totally free in open huge world to explore.

But even Skyrim had it's share of bugs and was made with console in mind it was also made with PC in mind mainly because of mods and WAY better graphics.

I would never play a game with controller K/M any time.

Maybe you forgot the MOD'S which is why PC version is always SUPERIOR to it's console counter part. Thousends of mods made to improve the game so much which make the console counterpart pathetic.

Thats difference with games like FFXIII and other console games and Elder Scroll with creation kit and HUGE mod community.

Only reasons why i buy Elder Scroll long time fan sinds 90s and MODS.

Btw i played skyrim first play through at launch without mods and was beside crappy UI playble ive not encounter many bugs(have high end pc prolly helps).

Bugs came when i start installing mods but solve them with mods thats the whole idea playing games like SKYRIM on PC, in the first place MODS MODS MODS and solving problems with it getting eventually such a good game and beautiful graphics that put PS4 and crappy XONE to a shame.

So not hypocritical AT ALL.

I don't buy bad console ports im very selctive and buy most games on GOG.COM 100% DRM FREE.

So far it just sounds like it is exactly like the original on console, no more no less???

From what i've heard it does run on higher resolution (even if it is only 1280x720) and has AA. But nothing fancy. I was expecting total rendering upgrade. It did look pretty good on PS3 back in the day, they could have made it look awesome on PC of today.

I remember old Command & Conquer games always started with "Westwood proudly presents:". Nowadays it seem for most games it's "We sort of half-assed..." :P

I endured 13, quite liked 13-2, and thought 13-3 was the biggest pile of drivel I've ever played. Why this game warranted being ported to the PC is beyond me.
