NNS10 Posted July 19, 2014 Posted July 19, 2014 Is it just me or is the New Vegas engine crap? I get major slowdowns in FPS in "dungeons" and I also get noticeable drops when I'm outside looking out into the landscape. Even with my ENB off, when I am viewing the landscape, I am not hitting my vsync cap. On Skyrim, I could hit 60 FPS no problem in those situations, even with ENB on.
ToJKa Posted July 19, 2014 Posted July 19, 2014 No, it's not just you. Skyrim's version of the engine is better optimized. Oblivion was even worse than Fallouts. Modded they are all as stable as a house of cards in an earthquake

Umm it's a 5 yo games engine, you can't expect 2014 graphics.
maybenexttime Posted July 19, 2014 Posted July 19, 2014 An old engine but still a lovable game. I wish someone made the effort to port FNV to the skyrim engine. I know there could be legal and manpower issues... but that would be neat.

ToJKa Posted July 19, 2014 Posted July 19, 2014 It's not so much about the graphics, but everything else running in the background. also the Fallout engine i believe can't make use of multi-core processors like Skyrim can, that alone makes a big performance difference. An old engine but still a lovable game. I wish someone made the effort to port FNV to the skyrim engine. And i wished Oblivion would be upgraded to Fallout's engine because it was so much better

Usually you see this when the newer game is a much newer DX version, because gfx drivers tend to stop focusing on the older dx versions; it's not uncommon for a dx10 or dx11 title to outperform a dx9 title on the same hardware. But Skyrim is DX9, just like FONV, FO3, and Obv.
Guest endgameaddiction Posted July 20, 2014 Posted July 20, 2014 Skyrim and Fallout both run at the average same FPS for me using Hires textures and ENB. Well, depends the ENB. I do have to use performance for my old crappy card. I'm looking to finally building my new game rig some time by either late this year or the beginning of 2015. I mean right now I'm squeezing 30 frames top with performance ENB. This means with ENBoost and most features enabled except DoF because I can't stand DoF. I was surprised my performanced actually maintained the same for Skyrim, I thought it would be worse, but then again I am not going higher than 2k res textures. I never had to change my settings. I have quadcore and left it like that while being able to tweak and run Fallout 3 (mainly) to be stable.
jaam Posted July 20, 2014 Posted July 20, 2014 Maybe the fact they rewrote the "whole" graphic engine counts ? Plus Obsidian was better at writing a RPG than optimizing the beth graphic code (ask sesom ). The simple fact that they deactivated vanilla reference to make room for DLC content shows how close was FNV engine to explode.

jaam Posted July 20, 2014 Posted July 20, 2014 For example, half of the PowerGanger outside in Primm were deactivated patch after patch. Memory was needed for something else on the xBox or the PS. JS did not say which, or I don't remember.
jaam Posted July 20, 2014 Posted July 20, 2014 At least they make writing such games financially profitable so we can enjoy them on our PC.
ToJKa Posted July 20, 2014 Posted July 20, 2014 For example, half of the PowerGanger outside in Primm were deactivated patch after patch. Well, that explains why there were only two of them when i played for a while without IWS.
soldier321 Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 @OP if you are running project reality weather mod, make sure you disable subtle dof, reenable it, and then disable it again. there si a bug with that mod, that subtle dof effect took my fps from 50-60 fps with ENB to 21 fps.
Contessa Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 My PC chokes on modded Oblivion but can handle heavily modded Skyrim/New Vegas just fine. I gave up trying to understand these things long ago.
NNS10 Posted August 20, 2014 Author Posted August 20, 2014 I don't use any weather mods. I chalk it it up to being a poor engine. I went back to Skyrim and man, what a difference. 50-60 fps with ENB and high res textures. If I go into any "dungeons" in FNV, it'll drop to 20-30. As much as I prefer guns to swords, I just can't do without the performance and the mods. The mods are probably what I miss most. Skyrim seems to be much more flexible when it comes to mods.

Yeah, it's sorta like when someone wonders why a 2008 V8 can't keep up with the later generation 2014 V8 engine in the same car. Flaying Doom 1 isn't going to give you 400fps because it's easier on the PC

It's not like we're trying to make FNV look like Skyrim. The point is FNV can't run well on graphics from its own generation. Skyrim, on the other hand, can be pushed to an almost photo-realistic level of graphics and still perform quite well. In fact, my Skyrim + ENB + High-Res Textures performs better than FNV with pretty standard textures and no ENB.
