In my opinion, Shout boxes get saturated with absolute nonsense, oh hai derps... By the same people and I can't stand it. But that's just me personally.

A chat room, if moderated could work though.

true but it will prolly also draw more pople to come online more often, if only just to talk and get a  response direcly instead of waiting like 1 day or 2,anf ofc some authroring is necessary, theres troll everywhere =P

That is precisely my point as to why it is bad. People want to use a shout box as a chat room and that isn't at all its intent. And if people only came to the forum to use the shout box and nothing else, then it defeats the point of the forum. lol

Yea, it can be a two sided sword. It can help someone step through a tech problem in "real time" but that info would be lost very quickly and others won't be able to see and learn from that experience. Individuals would be repeating themselves helping again and again the same problems over and over until many would just stop helping all together. I see this working quite well in the what would be similar to the General forum and Fun threads. Tech support not so much, at least in the long run.

Chatrooms are just not very popular in the TES/Fallout community, really.

Even on nexus, the biggest site out there, I've never seen them with more than 40 people in the room at the time.  in fact most of the time from what I noticed it never even goes above 10.

But then again there's an entirely different reason for that, I imagine.

ChatRoom on Nexus is not lacking activity because people don't *want* to use it.

It lacks activity because those who do are total dicks.

A ChatRoom for this site would be nice but the forums are good enough for me.

I'm not much for live chatting, anyway.

I like to think out my responses and make sure my words make sense next to each other.

That's just my opinion, though.

While my preference is for real-time interlocution...I can see how some folks would prefer to keep interactions to forum posts.

Everyone seems smarter when they have time to craft, edit, and finalize their thoughts before expressing them.

Didn't MisplacedReality make a chat room for LL members based elsewhere? Ah wait don't answer that, I see the link at the bottom of the thread now. X)

If it costs dinero and 2 times have been a fail it's kinda not worth it unless there is a poll and let the final results speak for themselves. I wouldn't mind, Though, I wouldn't use it too much. And at the moment I don't have a headset. Plus I am always listening to music so my chatting would have to be limited. Still it be nice to chat with members and browse the forums. Multi tasking is so today.

I think if a chat room was to be created again, it really needs limitations. I never been in Nexus Chatroom and never plan to. Reading all the terrying stories is enough. But, if it was made it should be accessable to those with a numerous amount of posts and 0 warnings. I'm assuming that the warnings given here eventually go away over time on good conducts? I need to reread the TOS. Been a while. ANyways, this would limit out the spammers and trollers.

I really doubt that having a chat room will ruin the purpose of the community forums. I've seen in other forums that only a handfull at the most hang out in chats. Most of the people won't use the system.

In my limited experience chatrooms and voips have a place on forums where it concerns quick correspondence and general banter. That being said they also fall prone to misuse or lack of use, and would require a very active moderation as things can get out of hand. If you look at posts that have been locked it often only took a mere 15 minutes to an hour to end up on the fast track to requiring moderation. While I have no intention of pointing blame at people or marking others with characteristics that are not true, it seems that on occasion there is a rabble-rouser.

That all being said since a quicker mode of communication is often nice it would need a bit of care in order to be set on the path to success. Such as active moderation, as well as being placed at the fore so that it is made aware to forum users that it is an option that is available to them. While I do not know what was implemented in the past and as to what their eventual downfall was. I do know that if people are not made actively aware as to the availability of something it will not be utilized. For the purpose of a chatrooom or voip I would suggest an sidebar notification of its activity and note that it is in working order. For instance LL Chatroom active users: 24 (Link). As well the rules would have to be clearly designated via a link that is displayed in the chat at the initial joining of said chat. Though that does not necessarily mean that others will adhere to the rules and regulations.

Considering all that I just put forth, I would have to say that I am interested in the proposal, although only marginally so. As well I agree that a chatroom would not take away from the forums as the forums are primarily utilized for the sake of discussion or seeking help, and often you can not easily do that in a chatroom due to the need of a long eloquent explanation.

mIRC  could be cool only if its moderator and people are open enough to some decent conversation i would go over there.

No go for me are vent or teams i hate it hehe.

But im content comming here don't realy see the need for chatroom.

I think it could be successful if the proper regulations are placed. LL keeps growing even though majority that join (even me at one point of time for over a year) will be lurkers for a while. But I have a reasonable excuse! I'm a FO3 follower and FO3 isn't really big over here, so I kinda felt excluded if trying to bring anything up about FO3. Luckily I've ran into other FO3 followers so I don't feel so left out no more.

Unofficial LL Chatroom

The above link is just a 'test' chatroom I made really quickly with this web service: http://www.chatzy.com/

The Pro's:

- It's FREE!

- You don't need an account to enter, just pick a username and go!

- It won't affect LL site performance! (Because it isn't part of LL)

- Probably other things I'm forgetting to mention

The Con's:

- It's not LL

- Since I'm a free member I have no idea what the limitations of the chatroom are (Dunno if it 'expires' doubt it though, also dunno how many people can get on it etc...)

- Anyone not affiliated with LL can join (becuase that chat room requires no pass nor authentication right now) THIS CAN BE CHANGED! Their are security settings so that if enough members and/or the moderating team here feels like they can setup a better more 'official' version all the tools are available their.

- You can set moderators and administrators (need to pay to set these up)

Anyway the above was just a 'mock-up' chatroom I made really. My own personal opinion on a chatroom you ask? Well It'd be a cool feature, I wouldn't really use it all that much but I'd comment on it here and there :)

I guess the biggest reason why I think LL should have a chat room is because Nexus has one and we can't show the nexus folks we're 'inferior' in any way, also because the people here are chiller and more open minded so I'm sure the chat would be more interesting.

The biggest reason not to have one? Well personally I don't stay on this site actively long enough to make/use the chat. Also dunno but I'm not really sold on the whole 'chat' concept really.

Disclaimer: I am in no way affiliated with the staff or administration of this site, the above post is completely made up on my own. It is a proof of concept and nothing more. Their are no chat admins on there and I do not plan on actively 'moderating' that chatroom. It is also open to anyone who can see this post (meaning non-registered LL users) so don't blame me if immature little kiddies get on there and start spouting nonsense.

2 questions.  1. How much useful info will become lost and unsearchable due to chat?  2. If the info is not designated as useful, why do we need a chat for it?

Logic aside, I have often thought at certain times that a chat would be useful.  Not as a general chat, but for the purpose of connecting project collaborations.  Though that only applies at certain times in certain situations.  I don't know how much convenience it would really deliver in comparison to the hassle of maintenance.

Just a thought.

Chat isn't about spreading useful info. It's mainly for connecting and chatting with other members in a lounge setting. I'm all for adding a chat to this site.

And: I've had some great times in XBox Live party (or game) chat, so there! :D

Good times, friend shot me point blank range with shotgun in L4D hard. Party chat blow up for hour. You right, some good deep down so much negatively.

Hehe... The first night that XBox Live party chat was active, I ended up on the opposite side to a friend who was in party, in a Call of Duty 3 match...

That map with the big French chateau.

Anyway, no-one else about and we run into one another. We both empty a clip of a machine gun at one another... both still alive... We empty our sidearms at one another. Both still alive! So, we both go at one another with melee, and we each kill the other, finally!

Then, we each realise it's the other of us we were up against, lol
