Benmc20 Posted February 24, 2014 Posted February 24, 2014 For the moment, i use the Live Another Life mod who lets me begin my game elsewhere from Helgen. The only problem (but it can be my game's fault) i've encountered with this mod is with SoS (and plugins) being active when starting a new game. I must start my new game without SoS and plugins and activate thoses later. If i don't do that, it's an instant CTD ... But, i've seen this mod : Skyrim Unbound (manually downloadable from here). Whch mod do you prefer ? And why ?
Guest xthejester Posted February 24, 2014 Posted February 24, 2014 I use live another life. Never tried unbound, but it does look interesting.
Vioxsis Posted February 24, 2014 Posted February 24, 2014 I use random alternate start You make your character, pick a load out and then you get dumped in some random place.
Sweatington Posted February 24, 2014 Posted February 24, 2014 Random alternate start is the only one i've tried of them, seem to be pretty good.
JohnGlock Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 The nice thing about Skyrim Unbound is it allows you to not be dragonborn and ignore the main quest entirely.

gvman3670 Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 I've only used Live Another Life. There are lots of options available and it has a random option in it as well.
Gumihoyah Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 Skyrim unbound does seem intresting thgh since u can have the random dragon encounters without being the dragonborn. Something live another life is really missing
itt1968 Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 I just made a new character the other day using Live another life and SoS... I've never had any problems with them... wish i could be more help.

Whch mod do you prefer ? And why ? I have live another life and live a deviant life mod. Only issue I've noticed with it is you have to leave the prison cell before activating mods that would generally activate when you enter the helgen keep after the dragon attack (paradise halls for example - cast reboot spell) otherwise it causes odd stuff to happen.
Benmc20 Posted March 4, 2014 Author Posted March 4, 2014 Another alternate start : http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/50950/? Not tested.
NexusVetX94 Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 heres a mod i recently uploaded http://www.loverslab.com/files/file/878-skyrim-altered-beginning/
Wolfoftheshadows Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 I use LAL and LADL. I mean LAL is good, but actually doesn't really do much but start you off somewhere else, it's nothing fancy, but if you don't want to go through the whole Helgen thing and you're looking for a quick alternative, it works. LADL on the other hand brings a more challenging start depending on the difficulty you pick. I always go for the hardest setting because it's fun trying to get all your bindings off, but you have to set everything before you start. Once the bindings are on, you can't change the settings. That's if you're into that though. Honestly I'm not so much, but it makes for an interesting start.
Pepper201 Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 I tried Skyrim Unbound and really liked it. Having already done the main quest a few times liked the option of not being the Dragonborn. Even if you change your mind and want to play as dragonborn you just go find a dragon and kill it ,absorb its soul . You don't have to do bleak falls barrow or the dragon fight. It gives you quest to go talk to the greybeards after you kill a dragon and absorb his soul. I tested this part and worked fine for me. No issues. Live another life is good too. Lots of different start options.
Mord Sif Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 I've just downloaded Unbound and going to give it a whirl for a change. Always used LAL in the past, which I've been happy with. My Sif has a pretty specific backstory that the "camping in the woods" start fits perfectly. (I just have to take off her hunter armour and use the console to replace it with some much kinkier stuff - creating my personalised version of LaDL! ) I haven't ever noticed any LAL/SoS problems personally. Another alternate start : http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/50950/? Not tested. This one looks really interesting, but having looked through the details I suspect it will conflict with a few mods I use that trigger when my character dies, or her health is low. The idea of playing as a ghost for a while intrigues me, though, so I might test it out after Unbound.
Guest Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 Good choice, Skyrim Unbound is by far my favourite alt start mod, it's so simple and easy to get things going with it thanks to it's MCM menu. Pair it with something like Character Creation Overhaul and you might never want to be dragonborn again. I haven't stood in front of a word wall or uttered a shout in a long time.
Coopervane Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 I've been giving Skyrim Unbound a bash aswell, and i gotta say it's won me over. There are a few things about LAL i've never quite liked, mostly that it still thrusts the main quest on you, the "investigate war activity" quest it uses to do that doesen't make a lot of sense to me (who would seek that out?), and it seems a little aggressive in it's quest editing, since it tries to start the game with Helgen having not yet happened, a lot of NPC's have been edited to remove Dragon related dialogue, some of which seem to just stand around and bug out untill you finally go to Helgen and start the main quest. LAL also doesen't let you skip much of Skyrim's start, it basically only lets you skip the tutorial run through Helgen-keep, but you still have to do all the rest, Bleak falls, the first dragon at the watchtower, all of that is still in there. It basically only skips the tutorial, and allows you to postpone the main quest, but at the cost that Helgen becomes a no-fly-zone for you, and certain NPC's (like Maramal in Riften) are basically disabled untill you do go to Helgen (so you coulden't get married for instance before going to helgen, and to buy Breezehome you still need to start the MQ and do the whole Bleak falls run as i'm sure most of us have done ad nauseam). The good thing about LAL is that it has more starts, and more varied ones, like the "Shipwrecked" start, that one's pretty cool. But unfortunately, since you can't customize the starts in any way in LAL, i often never used them. For the most part, i'd prefer to start the char as more a blank slate, no money, no armor, no good weapons, so i have something to work for from the start, and a clean slate that i can inject some RP'ing into. But most of the LAL starts make that too easy, you might technically start with nothing with something like the Shipwrecked start, but in truth that ship is full of good loot, so before you reach the shores, you're kitted out with everything you'd ever need. So i allways ended up just going for the "left for dead" start anyway, as that's the one that gives you a "nothing handed to you" start with a blank slate. Unbound is basically that, the "left for dead" start from LAL, pure Tabula Rasa. Only, it is a customizable "left for dead" start. Do you want to start dressed in rags? Common clothes? Mages robes? Fine clothes? Light armor? Heavy armor? Or maybe just leave it random. Do you want to start with no weapons? Just a dagger? A sword? A bow? A 2-hander? Or just leave it random. Do you want to start with no spells at all? Or maybe you want to pick only one? Two starting spells? Or perhabs random. Where do you want to start? In a specific hold? In the wilderness? In a city or town of your choice or just a random city? Or just leave it fully random. Do you want to start with no money? Maybe a little bit? Maybe a respectable amount? maybe a fair bit of money? Or leave it random. Whatever backstory you have in mind for your char, you can pick something from the options that will give you a fitting jumping-off point, you can start with nothing and wearing rags in Riften, be a hunter in Falkreath with a bow and light armor, start off with college robes and a few spells in Winterhold, or be decked out with fine clothes and a full coinpurse in Solitude. It may not give you a pre-written backstory, but if you've got something in mind, you can start out in a fitting way and location (or leave it random if you don't care). And then there's the other perks, like the fact that you don't have to be the Dragonborn, or ever play any part of the main quest if you don't want to. There's no quest in your journal telling you to do any of that, you can disable the abillity to learn words and absorb souls, you can even fully remove Dragons from the game if you're sick of them and would like to play a game of Skyrim that isen't centered around Dragons and Dragonborn's. Alduin has already attacked Helgen, so none of the NPC's have been edited to remove Dragon related dialogue, and none of them are disabled and just standing there, so you don't have to become the Dragonborn to get married or talk to Svend about his crush on Camilla and his rivalry with Faendal. And you don't have to crawl through Bleak falls and kill a Dragon (thus also starting the MQ) just to buy Breezehome and have a place to store your junk. Just slip Proventus 10k worth of gold and you're set (yup, the price has gone up, which is a nice touch). And if you at any point do want to start the MQ, just open the MCM, enable Dragons and soul/word absorbtion, and go kill yourself a Dragon, and there you go, the Greybeards want to have words with you. Unbound may lack some of the sofistication that LAL can provide in some of it's starts, but man, i am digging the freedom it offers in it's place. Besides, i rarely did bother to use the more elaborate LAL starts anyway, since they often gave you to much starting gear for my tastes.
Benmc20 Posted April 10, 2014 Author Posted April 10, 2014 For me, Skyrim Unbound is far better than Live another Life. Now that i have switched, i can't change back .
Mord Sif Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 Yeah. I loved the little test I did with Unbound. I'm partway through a LAL playthrough at the moment, but when I start over again it's going to be with Unbound. Lots of great options to choose from, and it's great not to have the MQ forced on you
Benmc20 Posted April 10, 2014 Author Posted April 10, 2014 Exactly. And Skyrim Unbound fits into the game really smoothly. Very few glitches (encountered only one so far).
crusher Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 I kinda like the randomness of 'random alternate start', sometimes you need to be running for your life immediately; can be a good thrill from the get go. And if you are using higher difficulty setting, you need to run, real fast.. Also keeps everything in place so you can either visit helgen to start main quest, or just ignore and play sandbox. Great for testing mods. I have so many mods for war conflict, extra npc etc, that you really don't need to start the war quest to feel and see all the mayhem. The mod could use a 'character' preset position, so you can use your customized character look for every new re-start. Mod I'm really looking for is something that places devastation art/design everywhere. Random spawn of dead bodies strew about the base of a mountain pass, smoldering fire from distant contested areas. More, pillories and caged captives, hanging/execution trees, heads on stakes [more jrr martin, if you read the books, HBO sucs by comparison]. Telltales of war throughout. Not just a flash mobs of raging npc occasionally trying to run you down, or the occasional dead horse and overturned cart. Not found this mod yet. Plenty of npc mods, just none that provides the visual, visceral art of apocalyptic war etc. Something to improve the visual depth of war in skyrim by model/item placement only.
forbiddenone Posted August 8, 2014 Posted August 8, 2014 Live Another Life seem to work... whenever it feels like it (which is not often ).Even if I put it up at the top of the load order, it's a crap shoot. I just want to skip the intro sequence :(/
johann7124 Posted August 9, 2014 Posted August 9, 2014 LAL should be as close to the bottom of the load order as possible to work properly.
gurugeorge Posted September 12, 2014 Posted September 12, 2014 I've recently gotten back into Skyrim, and after modding up my usual STEP Core, and starting to experiment with some mods on top of that, I decided I was so sick of the usual starting stuff I decided to try Skyrim Unbound out. (I'd used Alternate Start before, so thought I'd try this "other" alt start mod). My intention was only to just get into the game to test things, but the start I got was so engaging I'm actually playing the character now It's actually a rather awesome mod, and brings you into the game in a more inviting way than LAL, I think. The good thing being that you can customize your person beforehand. Re. what to wear, weapons, etc., you can have that random or you can tailor it quite carefully, so you aren't forced to start in a set way equipment-wise. This helps you think about your character, so that when you get to character creation, something's already forming in your mind. Same with starting location and situation - you can have it random or tailor it how you like. Generally the options between random and starting as you want are well done, nothing OP, but you aren't forced to start out as a meaningless schlub if you don't want to.
NNS10 Posted September 13, 2014 Posted September 13, 2014 This has caught my attention and I intend to try it. However, how is compatibility with the Unofficial Skyrim Patches? Skyrim Unbound's page mentions incompatibilities since they touch the same scripts. The workaround is to use the loose scripts version, but what quirks will be experienced? What is lost by losing some of the bug fixes in the scripts from the Unofficial Skyrim Patches?
