I'm considering options for how to replace the FOMM archive storage -- this is the "cache" (usually in c:\games\(game name)\mods\) that FOMM uses for packages you've added.

I need to understand what people are using for their OS so I know what options I have available, so, TIA for responding to the poll.

for the couple months I ran xp64 it was quite nice... except for finding printer drivers.. that was a nightmare.. games worked SUPRISINGLY well though..

ya 8.1x64 here too if you are to make the distinction (also chose the win7/8 x64 option)..

Thanks people, keep 'em coming.

Yes 8 includes 8.1; all I'm really interested in there is if it's Win7 or newer. I don't have Win8 myself, but I can't possibly use any Win7 features if there are significant portions of the users still using XP or Vista.

Time for an upgrade people... ;)

Most individuals that game in RL that I know are using Win7x64. Then comes Win8x64 (8.1 included) then finally xp following up last with a very small percentage. Maybe only one individual and that is just because he is using an old computer and isn't really interested in gaming. He is a mac user for the most part. Windows just for some old games he uses. Hell he don't even mod games.

Perhaps just fix the errors in the "Official" one. (what you have pretty much already have done) You know the crash on logging on to Nexus. etc. Just minimum fixes and allow the developers post that one on their sight (provided they want that fix) then move forward on all the tools that you need with Win7 or better as a requirement. So long as the mods created here are still compatible with XP / Vista for installation through "official" FOMM. (Which is fixed) They can continue to use that. Those that have upgraded can use (your) Prideslayer Edition of FOMM.

This will help those still on the old versions of windows while giving you more flexibility to grow tools for the newer FOMM by having support only for Win7/8. Perhaps even only x64 systems at that.

Supporting x64 vs x32 is no big deal, that's just a build time option. If anything, I'll go back to a pure 32bit build. There is nothing in FOMM that requires 64bit stuff except calling the right BOSS dll, and nothing that benefits from x64.

For now I've come up with a smart 'system' that calls the right one but it's extra code that isn't really benefiting anyone.

Win7 and Vista both introduced some things that we could make use of though.

Since I bought my PC a month before Win7 came out and I'm a lazy bastard, I still use Vista 64... :shy:

Despite the popular hate for Vista, I never really had a problem with it, so I really didn't feel the need to upgrade either. DX11 would be nice, but honestly there aren't that many games out there that I'm interested in that use it.

Anyway, let me know if you need some vista specific feedback and I'll see what I can do.

@Bruce

I had no problems with Vista either. At least no problems a few registry edits couldn't solve. ;) I moved to Win7 basically because I was almost given a license. (very cheap I think 20 dollars) It was through work so I said what the hell let me see if it is better. It is better in my opinion. It runs more stable, not to say that vista wasn't but 7 is even better. It is cleaner and in my experience less resource hungry.

If possible before Microsoft discontinues 7 I would get a copy. Just incase Win8 isn't suiting you would still have a more modern version as software moves on. Most people are using Win7 in my experience. Many aren't moving to Win8 too quickly if they have any choice in the matter. Win7 is like Win98 was in it's day. Windows 3.1, Win98, Winxp, Win7 were the OS's that just plain work and work well.

I just found it funny how using 3rd party apps for like MMO and UAC blocking it was the most dreadful thing. Everyone was going crazy trying to launch FFXI windower and couldn't figure it out until most some figured out to disable UAC. The huge rant about it for that first month when Win Vista came out. Even launching with the normal app ended up crashing while it tried to connect to the server. lol  So many pissed off users. I can just imagine all those other MMO games during that era like WoW, GoW 2. That was an epic moment.

I have 2 computers running games.

My main/primary is a Win 7 Pro x64 OS for my new [8 months old] computer.

My secondary is a Win XP SP3 32bit OS on my old system [8 YEARS old]

I've kept it functioning because part of my games collection [and my current printer] just wont install/run correctly on my Win 7

[despite compatability installs/running in compatability modes] Always effs up my graphics.

Not sure why, they should work on Win 7. 32bit vs 64bit system, maybe? DirectX issues?
