Z0mBieP00Nani Posted January 10 Posted January 10 I tried using the change password features, but I never get a confirmation email. I want to contact Steam directly, but I don't see a way to do that without access to an account that I don't have access to. I have probably accumulated over $1,000 in games over the years, so it's kind of a big deal to me. Any help would be appreciated.

Miss Ripley Posted January 10 Posted January 10 Hi! So sorry to see this, but you can try the steps here (I think you probably did but just pasting it in case you missed something): https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/0A94-F308-34A5-1988 I suppose there is some system that rolls back recent changes after it detects the recovery attempts from your side: "If you're getting stuck in the recovery process, make sure you're entering the information Steam requests at each step. For example, when searching for an account, Steam's account recovery system asks for your email address, not the account's current email address. Entering your email address as instructed for the search will help Steam identify your account, or present other options for locating an account if the email address has been changed." Maybe you need to wait longer for the system to trigger? 😮 I also tried finding the support mail address for you to contact them directly but it seems that it does not exist. Google AI is halucinating and saying the support@steampowered.com should be the support address, but I cant verify that anywhere. Maybe try emailing there if everything else fails. Hope you get some response from the support anyway. 1

It just asks me to type in an email address. I have tried typing in the address, but I never get a confirmation code that allows me to get to the point of being able to change my password. I don't know if Steam is having issues, and that's why I'm not getting a confirmation code, or if I need to talk to a real person. If I need to talk to a real person, I don't know how to do that because there does not appear to be a way to contact them. Unless I'm missing something that isn't obvious.

I could try making a new email address somewhere else, I suppose, and then using that one. But I'm not sure if that will make much of a difference. Maybe it's just taking a long time. It wouldn't be the first time a confirmation code took too long to get to me, or just never showed, I've seen that before with other things.
SingleForLife Posted January 10 Posted January 10 @Z0mBieP00Nani I also had my account stolen a couple of weeks ago. Reported it as stolen, gave my email address, the same one my steam account had always been attached to, and gave information when I last used my account and when I lost access. Got my account back one and a half days later.

What tipped you off that your account was stolen? No matter how many times I try to change the password and have it send a verification link, it does not. I noticed that the wording on the "An account verification link has been sent to (X) if it is tied to a Steam account", "...IF IT IS TIED TO A STEAM ACCOUNT". Does this mean that if my account was stolen, and the person who stole it changed the address, then I would not get any verification links? If that is the case, I'm not sure where to go from there, since it's not obvious. EDIT: Ok, I got my account back, it had been hijacked. I decided to approach things from a different angle and search up the account by the name and not the email address was supposed to be attached to. When I did that, I was able to see that the email address had been changed, from there I was able to prove that I was the real account owner through credit card information that the thief (hopefully) didn't have, then I changed the password on my email, and then changed the Steam account email back to my email address, and then I changed the password to one that I came up with off the top of my head. All of that was done after scanning my computer for malware. Hopefully, that will be the end of the theft BS... Whoever had access to the account didn't seem to care about changing anything on it, so my guess is they were looking for credit card info, which, joke is on them if that was the case, because I always tell Steam to forget that information before every purchase, just in case something like this happens. Steam has that information on record, but it would not be visible in the credit card field during purchases. Edited January 11 by Z0mBieP00Nani 2

I've avoided this myself since an attempt years ago was stopped by Steam since the originating IP was in China. I then changed my password to something I have to read from as I couldn't ever remember something like that without using it 20 times a day for weeks. Still, if this had happened from my country - would I have been so lucky? Edit: I also leave my system running 24/7 and am logged into Steam 99% of the time. Edited January 19 by landess 1
belegost Posted January 25 Posted January 25 (edited) Use Steam app on your phone and set up two-step authentication. Any time a login from a new machine is detected you'll be notified immediately, along with IP address of the machine the login attempt is made from. You'll be asked to approve or deny, and if that wasn't you, you'll know your password's been hacked. I've used it for years, it adds one step if you want to login from a new computer, so you may think this inconvenient, but better little inconvenience once in a while, than a stress you went through. If your password got hacked once, it can happen again, two-step auth makes sure the account can't be accessed, even with proper login, password and email, unless the hacker has your physical phone device with him and can unlock it (if you set up screen lock). I had same problem, where I didnt get recovery to my email, because it was stolen,.. just make sure to ADD 2FA like Steam app on phone where You dont need to write password, but just scan code to log in,.. but You need good antivirus on mobile or keep it out of danger.
