Intermittent CTDs; Check my log file?

Recommended Posts

Hi, guys. I recently had to nuke and pave my SKYRIM install twice and I'm trying to get things stabilized so I can keep playing...

I finally got my PC's body right and the skeleton, got FNIS and Sexlab going and started adding some Sexlab mods.

Every now and then, though, usually outdoors, I'll get a CTD. I'm playing with Alternate Start and am currently trying to get to Helgen but this keeps happening every few minutes.

I'd appreciate it if someone could take a look at my log file and load order and offer some input. It looks like I'm getting stack dumps related to Wearable Lanterns and a recurring error that has something to do with 83Willows_101Bugs and I have no idea what the hell that is...

Posted

83Willows_101Bugs has to do with Wearable Lanterns by Chesko if you have it installed you can catch fireflies and keep them in jars so it's probably coming from the wearable lanterns mod.

Posted

83Willows_101Bugs I think is referring to this mod:

http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/4955/?

Looks like a dependency for Wearable Lanterns (can't say for sure, don't use it).

Regarding the log. It seems that SOS just keep spamming it's scripts until your PC cannot longer chew through it. From my experience (previous setup, before I nuked it FTGJ): 120+ mods; SOS enabled: CTD only occurred when going to menu or quick saving/loading. The longer I played, the higher was the CTD risk. After ~40 minutes CTD was imminent. The same rig w/o SOS: occasional CTD here or there, but 2-3 times less frequent.

So, long story short: if things become FUBAR, disable the SOS. Right now I suggest getting rid of HighRes Textures (it is shitty, Nexus have some excellent texture mods and reducing the load on your rig is always a good thing).

UPD. For some reason you have warnings about missing Frostfall and Helgen Reborn in your log. Might want to check your load order mods dependancies.

Posted

There is some kind of consistency check that keeps happening with Frostfall and Helgen Reborn that appears to be related to Wearable Lanterns but I've never had either of those mods installed.

I downloaded the high res textures from Steam but they are not turned on in my load order.

It looks like there is a lot of overhead coming from SoS in these log files...

The errors coming from wearable lanterns aren't exactly errors in that log.

[01/06/2014 - 11:48:27PM]             Wearable Lanterns is now performing compatibility checks. Papyrus warnings about missing or
[01/06/2014 - 11:48:27PM]                         unloaded files may follow. This is normal and they can be ignored.

It just trying to open other mods to see if you have them installed, as it needs to apparently do some scripting around their features. Naturally, if you don't have the mods installed, you'll get an error about it not being able to open the file.

Still don't understand why my game keeps crashing... Looking at my log file, it seems like it's related to either Wearable Lanterns or Schlongs Of Skyrim.

Anyone have any ideas?

I'm running the game under these conditions...

i3 processor

4GB of RAM

ATI Radeon HD 4890 1GB card, on medium graphics settings

Windows 7 32bit

First off, your papyrus log isn't a crash log at all! So just turn off it's tracking in your skyrim.ini it will make your game run better with it off.

Second, Looking at your load order, I see a few mods that could cause problems but I don't know what version of them you use so I'm going to suggest going through your mods one by one and making sure they are upgraded to there latest version.

Third, You need to use BOSS to sort your mods for you. A well organized load order will reduce conflicts and increase stability.

Fourth, If you are crashing it would be nice for you to explain in depth where and if it is in the same area and if you notice any mod created changes to be in effect in that area when the game crashes. I'm guessing texture packs but It might be something else you haven't told us about.

Fifth, If you don't know how to use Tes5Edit to clean your mods, then you get to learn, there are tutorials on Youtube that are easy to find just by searching for Tes5Edit. Several of your installed mods have known dirty edits that if not cleaned can cause conflicts it's obviously best to reduce conflicts as much as possible.

Sixth, If you have any large texture packs installed remove them. Literally the most common cause of CTDs.

Thanks for your comments.

I am using BOSS and I've used TES5edit to clean any mods that have been pointed out by BOSS. I do have the official High Res texture packs from Bethesda but they are turned off.

The mods at the tail end of my load order are the unrecognized ones and they are mostly follower mods. I suppose I could move them up if you think that might make a difference. If you could point out which mods you think might be the problems, that would really be helpful. I try to keep everything up to date.

My CTDs mostly seem to happen when I'm on the road travelling from one place to another. For example, I'm on the road to Ivarstead and keep getting CTDs as I get closer to the village.

I'll turn off the papyrus logging and see if that helps.

Do you need "IMAGINATOR - Visual Control for Skyrim.esp" I found this to be a problem mod in the past but it has been months since I last saw anyone with it so I don't know if it's still causing problems or if it has been updated since then.

Are you using the ENBoost? or Safetyload? Do  you have a custom installed skyrim.ini or do you just let Skyrim set that up for you?

ENBoost will reduce your memory load by about half which helps stop you from having a CTD when hitting the limit.

Safetyload will stop your game from having infinite load screens or freezing during play. It helps identify a problem easier if you get rid of as many memory load CTDs and errors as possible.

Just looking up Skyrim.ini tweaks on google will net you tweaks to add "threading" and "background loading" to your game. You don't want to add anything else not configured when skyrim sets up you ini. the mod Skyrim configurator found on the nexus will make this a lot easier. (though only if you can install it, since the nexus likes to be down when you need it)

If you get all of this set up and you're still crashing, then it is definitely an esp/m error but for now I think It might be memory based. Crashes while walking towards open world cities tend to be memory based.

I use IMAGINATOR all the time, haven't had any issues with it whatsoever. I also use it very lightly, honestly, just for a couple of the settings that it provides. Anyway, I haven't experienced any instability from it, and I run Skyrim for almost 7 or 8 hours at a time fairly regularly without any crashes.

Honestly, I think a lot of the stability problems with IMAGINATOR come from using the spell it provides for configuration -- which I've never used. Not even once. There's another mod on the Nexus which completely obliterates the need for it by adding an IMAGINATOR menu to SkyUI's MCM. It's here, by the way.

Don't take that to mean that I'm 100% sure that IMAGINATOR is safe, though -- I have no idea, just haven't seen any issues from it personally.

I have to second this one, SafetyLoad is positively essential. Practically a required download in my opinion.

If you are getting CTDs from traveling from one exterior cell to another (for example  to Whiterun from Riverwood at game start - going to warn the Jarl for Gerdur), it's usually because you're heading into a scripted event. The walk to Whiterun walks into the scripted event with the Companions and the giant at Pelagia farm. Loading the new cell will check a number of  things - scripts and even skeleton to mesh matchups. I recently spent two days trying to determine why I couldn't get to Whiterun - only to discover that one of my mods had the giant's skeleton over-written with one that didn't match the new mesh ( Bestiality extras Nude Creatures and Naked Giants). I run with around 200 to 220 mods at any given time, so sometimes you really have to look deep to find the issue.

Mod Organizer, Tes5Edit, BOSS and FNIS are better friends than Google sometimes.

It will. I wouldn't have suggested it if I didn't think it could help you with your posted specs.

Download is the arrow

Make sure these are set like this. You should get a nice ass fps boost out of this too.

enblocal:

[GLOBAL]
UsePatchSpeedhackWithoutGraphics=true
UseDefferedRendering=true

[PERFORMANCE]
SpeedHack=true
EnableOcclusionCulling=true

[MEMORY]
ReduceSystemMemoryUsage=true
DisableDriverMemoryManager=false
DisablePreloadToVRAM=true
EnableUnsafeMemoryHacks=false
ReservedMemorySizeMb=256
EnableCompression=true
AutodetectVideoMemorySize=true

Option setting:

[WINDOW]
ForceBorderless=true
ForceBorderlessFullscreen=true

Enb has probably the most competent fake fullscreen for Skyrim out right now. Fake full screen boosts stability as well, so I wanna make sure you have at least one implemented. If you use this make sure you use your SKSE_Loader (installer drops a skyrim (skse) on your desktop) to launch the game.

FreeRamXP pro : http://download.cnet.com/FreeRAM-XP-Pro/3000-2086_4-10070530.html

Since we are on the subject. This will purge your memory automatically. I have it set for every 5 minutes. I haven't has a memory CTD in months now so I recommend this combo. You can purge skyrim's vram with Enb but it's manual and FRXP does so for you but for your entire system, I universally use it for all my games.

Posted

Thank you for these suggestions! Do I need to activate any files from ENBoost with my mod manager or will it run in the background on its own after I launch SKSE?

Posted

Unpack it to your Skyrim folder don't use mod managers for enb since it will unpack it to you data folder which is wrong. Just save the zip file so you can easily uninstall it for whatever reason.

And yes it runs in the background.

Posted

I copied the contents of the wrapper folder to the Skyrim folder and edited the enblocal.ini file as you suggested. If I read the Nexus page right, the injector folder is for people running the game on laptops?

I also DL'd and installed the other program you mentioned.

Posted

A program that will do more for performance for you than Enboost is OneTweak on the Nexus. It'll run Skyrim in full-screen windowed mode amongst other things. Personally I use Hialgo as well, Enboost tends to make my game "jerky".

Just a couple of other things to try.

Posted

You can't use onetweak or hialgo with ENB. Well you can but it's oil and water. ENB blows onetweak and hialgo out of the water by it's self though. I've used them in the past.

If your game was Jerky it means you set your memory settings wrong. :P I purposely made sure that Sulaco wouldn't do just that.

Well, I've tried running the game with ENBoost installed and also with FreeRamXP Pro running.

Visually, the game looked terrible and I got a CTD a couple minutes into the game as I was running up the 7000 steps. FreeRamXP Pro actually popped up during the game to search for an update and I had to close it.

Did I copy the right ENBoost files to the Skyrim directory? I went into the wrapper folder and copied those files.

I'm attaching the enblocal.ini file so you can see the edits I made.

I think I made all the changes you suggested but I have to be missing something or the game wouldn't be looking so terrible, right?

You should probably stop using whatever "FreeRamXP" is. Especially since Windows 7 memory management is fine, you have 4GB (even on win7 32) and it doesn't seem to actually support Windows 7. And you should also enable the 3Gb switch if you haven't done so already. Or just re-install 64-bit Windows if you can.

Since you don't know what "FreeRamXP" is, you shouldn't make suggestions about it.

3Gb switch is useless since Skyrim will crash at 3.1gbs regardless of what you enable. (4gbs are enabled by default so...) What I'm doing and helping him use less memory, so he doesn't crash, since that was his original problem.

ENBoost?

Also, memory cleaners are crap.
