Infinite Loading Screens; Help!

Hello everyone.

First of all I'd like to greet you all since I've been lurking in these forums for at least a year but never had the urge to post until today. I got a lot of shit going on in my personal life which transfers to a lot of stress, so what better way to fight some of it by playing a game, right? I actually tried playing New Vegas before until I totally messed it up with mods the point where I couldn't do anything anymore with my old savegames. So I waited. About 6 or 7 months even, I'd guess and tried this again, as I mentioned.

It took me days to get all of this sorted, read every discription, possible incompatibility and so forth for every mod listed (and a lot more) until I dumped it down to the following:

Everything went fine; starting the game, making the character, no lags, no crashes, everything showed up and then came the zone change, meaning I opened the door to Goodsprings or any door for that matter. I just have infinite loading screens. It actually worked sometimes for no apparant reason but only after I would restart the game and do one zone change, after that the next loading screen is bound to be infinite again and now it won't even load my savegame anymore either 90% of the time.

I ran FNVEdit to check the loadorder, doublechecked with the installed mods (hence why Body by Race and Armor by Race is disabled), tried disabling mods via NMM one by one, starting the game up again, and again, and again, and again ...just to see if something would fix it but apparently it won't or I missed something. I don't know and I'm lost. I'm desperate even because the thing that was supposed to relieve stress for me, actually causes me even more now.

If there is anyone smarter than me and able to help me out, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Regards,

Abiose.

P.S.: Sorry if I mess up my english here and there, it's not my native language.

I haven't gotten into Fallout on the pc yet, but I plan to one day. I was always playing on my sex box 360. I got a good gaming pc, not the best, but decent and started modding skyrim. After trial and error I've learned somethings and while I don't have to much knowledge. I have some general knowledge and you could try loading a clean save if you have one or starting one and than loading your other save from that one. That might work.... no idea though just throwing out ideas.

Skyrim is actually what lead me into these forums and I modded that as well ...a lot, which is why I'm not totally green when it comes to all of this but I'm obviously not that smart.

Anyway, I tried your suggestion and the result is a solid CTD instead of an infinite loading screen. Maybe that's progress, I'm not sure, thank you though.

There is a semi new mod on Nexus, called New Vegas Anti Crash. I use it myself, and it works wonders for preventing crashes and hangs (which is what you're experiencing, a hang). It's even provided in FOMOD format so you can install it via FOMM or NMM if you're not sure where to put it manually.

If Anti Crash still doesn't fix the problem, what you may need to try is this. Remove all mods and start a new character. Complete character creation, finish your business with Doc and leave. Once you've successfully left the Doc's house, save and exit, and activate your mods.

Also, if you're already using FNVEdit you probably already know this but I'm just being thorough. Don't just check your load order with it, make a merged patch. If you have 2 or more mods altering the worldspace of Goodsprings, they may be conflicting and preventing you from leaving Docs house. Make a merge patch to resolve those conflicts.

I downloaded the named "mod" and tried loading the original save with it but again it didn't work. I then tried loading the save inside Doc Mitchell's home and then loading the original save but failure again. Now I should mention that loading the save file inside his home seems to always work, just every zoning after that point will hang my game.

I also looked up merge patches since you mentioned it (thank god for Gopher) and made one. So I tried loading the original save with that and the Anti Crash .dll - no luck. Tried it with the save inside his home and then loading the original save (even just simple zoning out of the house) but nope.

So I deactivated every mod again and started a new game (the manually installed "mods', well, mostly textures obviously and the enb still running at this point) to create a fairly clean save, I hope. I saved outside Doc's house and went into the Goodsprings pub.

Now since none of my mods actually changes this area, except putting an NPC in one of the benches in the back, this peeked my interest. It might be nothing but I'm just mentioning it to be thorough unless I'm stupid of course and it's supposed to be that black. I know I got darkening lighting and texture sets and all but it seemed odd to me still, especially since the textures seemed messed up in some parts, mainly the floor.

Anyways, I reactived all my mods and did manage to load the supposely clean save without a problem. I went to the pub and tried to zone in but the game hang itself again. When I loaded that save though I got a message that Sexout Drugging (and I quote) "seems to think you use an older version of Sexout Common Ressources" when I, in fact, use the latest version, like from all installed mods listed. And then something interesting happened yet again. I figured "maybe I should try it with and without a merged patch (for no reason...)" - I went and did that except trying to zone into a new area, the game hang itself again trying to load the 'clean save' now (in both attempts).

I'm at a loss but I do greatly appreciate any help offered; I'm sorry if I don't express that enough.

Edit: I also tried loading it w/o Sexout Drugging (with and w/o merged patch created especially for that) but... you know.

The infinite load bug is a common issue that made me pull my hair out for a while. This fixed it for me (there is some other info if you google hard enough):

Open Fallout.ini which should be inside your folder: .../Documents/My Games/Fallout NV/  (On English Windows, search for it if you can't find)

Find this line and set the value to 2 as below:

iNumHWThreads=2

This fixed the infinite load bug for me.

Here are some more things very useful to know:

To stop your savegames taking 1 minute+ to load after a while, never save over an old savegame, always make a new one, then just find the save files and delete old unneeded ones every now and then. It may sound hard to believe, but the GameBryo engine is such that this fix genuinely works (I tried reinstalling game from scratch and using a savegame cleaner and they did nothing, but this did)

If you get the game hanging on start up with the menu never appearing, don't panic, many people on google will tell you to reinstall the game- don't: you most likely just have a corrupted plugin- disable them all and check if it works, then reenable until you find which one.

(If you find my English difficult, let me know and I will try to explain more clearly)

As long as you don't get to technically specific on me it's fine, I only might mess up articulating myself properly in english, understanding it is fine for the most part. Thousands of movies and episodes did that for me.

I looked in the Fallout.ini but I actually don't have that line in there. The closest to it was iNumHavokThreads=1 which I then did change to 2 in value but that didn't seem to do anything. Both saves (meaning the 'clean' and the original one) won't load.

I attached my Fallout.ini in case you or someone wants to check for themselves. Maybe that's the issue at hand even.

I would not recommend changing any settings if you aren't sure what they do- so I would set the havok threads back to 1

Since you don't have the line, just add it in yourself underneath 'bLoadFaceGenHeadEGTFiles=1' (bottom of general section)

So it will look like this:

...

sLanguage=ENGLISH
bLoadFaceGenHeadEGTFiles=1
iNumHWThreads=2

[Display]
fDecalLifetime=10.000

....

I thought about just adding that line too but I didn't know where, so thank you for that!

Unfortunately it didn't change much. I did manage to load the 'clean' save at least but even then the game hangs itself upon trying to load a different zone. (I use the pub just to check if it'll load zones properly.)

Even though I'm fairly sure I deleted every old file possible in my old installation of FNV, I'm starting to think that re-installing the game is going to be the only option for me. I would just really like to avoid this because I forgot to make a backup back in the days and I'd have to download the whole thing again, which takes me a couple of days and constantly cutting my bandwidth to just that. (Yes, my internet connection actually is that bad in this day and age.)

Thank you again though for going out of your way to offer solutions, I'd repay you if I could.

Okay, I think you may need to add the line (in the same place) to Fallout_default.ini which is in the main /Fallout NV/ folder

Do you mean you get to the loading screen and loads forever with the background picture changing? That is the bug this fix refers to

Link to comment

Yep, that's what happens every time I try to enter or leave a building (or change the zone for that matter).

I tried adding this line to the Fallout_default.ini and even tried adding it to the FalloutPrefs.ini (just because that previous line existed in there and I figured 'why not...') but the original save still won't load and neither will the 'clean' one now. The only seemingly always working save file is the one inside Doc's house.

Well, that setting fixed it for me. How many cores does your CPU have, and what is it?

I have 4, with no hyperthreading and Windows 7. You could try setting that value to 1 or to however many cores you have if more than 2- but as you can probably tell, I am stabbing in the dark here now (making guesses).

I also found this here, which you could try:

Simply start a new game and then proceed to load your old save. I am not sure why this works, but hey, I am able to play again, so I'm not gonna complain

Link to comment

Before you resort to a full reinstall try this. Remove all mods. Open steam, right click on Fallout New Vegas and go to properties. In the properties window go to Local Files tab, then at the bottom select Verify Integrity Of Game Cache.

This will replace any missing or corrupted core files without doing a full re install.

Also, you really need to run ALL mods through a file manager, even texture mods. You never know what can mess up something. I've had texture mods mess up my game. Everything needs to be easily removed when necessary.

Good advice KainsChylde, unfortunately when using FOMM, most mods are not offered in the wonderful *.fomod format and when trying to "create from folder" it will crash. I do not trust NMM to install mods properly, so unfortunately again, the only good method is the manual method. However, FNVEdit and it's predecessor FO3Edit, work wonders for finding nearly any mod conflicts. Using the "Apply Filter" works pretty well at finding and sorting out problems As to the whole "Modding Up, Mastering Up, Merge Patch processes, I have never found these to work at all, unless you have "ZERO" conflicts, which is impossible, even the DLCs conflict with each other, which I find hysterical.

Hey, I really do appreciate every little straw you or anyone can hand me here, because I really do want to play this game from beginning to start once without f***ing it up.

I have an Intel i7 930 @2.8GHz so I tried putting that number from 1 to 8, loading first the save inside Doc's house, then trying to load my original save resulting in the same dilemma as before. But I also tried starting a new game (not always waiting for the full sequence there but occaisonaly actually waiting until I can move) and then loading my original save which would cause an CTD, instead of a hang.

I put that value back to 2 now but on a side note, in case I were to reinstall the whole game... is that something I should always put in those .ini files and at which number in my case?

I will definitely remember that and on that note I actually tried disabling the texture mods than run through NMM, except for the NMC Texture Pack beacuse I'm fairly sure that's not the issue since I played with that one before back in the days when everything was working (before I messed it up with other mods) and it didn't get an update since then either. Everything lead to the same old results except when I deactivated Weapon Retexture Project* - It wouldn't even load the usually working save inside Doc's house.

*(Oh, and yes, I did deactive the merged patch and the WMX patch for that one, tried it in all 3 ways even too.)

Anyway, I tried verifying the integrity of game cache afterwards via Steam and it did download 7.5KB of something; I don't know what exactly or how to check it. I'm a Steam newbie in that regard, sorry.

The result of it is as follows: The save inside doc's house still works, the 'clean' save hangs the game and straight up loading the original save or starting a new game and then trying to load that one will crash the game.

Now, maybe I should mention that this original save actually is a Quick Save. I didn't think that would matter since it's essentially just another save, just created via a Hotkey, instead of manually, but I could, of course, just load the save inside Doc's house and try to get out just to save manually if someone thinks that would make a difference.

And thank you all again for trying to help!

What location is your original save at? Also, do you have a previous save at a different one, and is it any different?

CTDs can happen when you disable plugins and load a save somewhere affected by them, so if it is a plugin causing the problem the save location may be significant, or similarly for vanilla game bugs

Link to comment

Yea, I'm using the 4GB enabled NVSE version. I don't know if that even could be a problem either because FNV is running at max. ~1.4GB when I have to close it with Windows Task Manager.

What location is your original save at? Also, do you have a previous save at a different one, and is it any different?

[...]

I only have 3 save files. The first beeing the one inside doc's house, that almost always seems to work, the second beeing the 'clean' save just outside of doc's house, literally right in front of his door and the third (the original (quick-)save) is in front of the pub in Goodsprings. I don't have any other save files, so basically the ones messing up are both labeled as "Goodsprings."

Relevant to mention might be that when I first started and I made the first and third save mentioned, beeing in Goodsprings was working, just upon loading yet another zone there everything went downhill for some reason. First just other zones wouldn't load anymore and then Goodsprings itself.

So I just tried loading the save inside doc's house and then just do "coc Primm" in console. It actually loaded Primm. Now I should mention one more thing here... when I did that command in console I didn't finish the character creation yet and had no pip boy. I got shot there right away pretty much and it loaded the save inside doc's house again, when this happened (again):

ZYMpr5l.jpg

After that "coc Primm" would result in a hang. I wasn't sure... is it this texture thing that might cause an issue? Or maybe it had to do with things loading before/after I get my pip boy. So I went ahead, finished the character creation after restarting the game, got the pip boy and did "coc Primm" again but this time it wouldn't load at all but crash instead. Basically both variants are messed up it seems. I don't know. Just mentioning it as detailed as I can.

I am compelled to say.. this is terrible advice!

When you download a mod that isn't a .fomod, there are only two "right" ways of installing it.

The first, which applies to pretty much all the mods out there, including those here on LL that aren't .fomod's, is to simply click "add fomod" in the FOMM package manager and select the zip/7z file. These are called "fomod ready" archives and nearly every mod you download is one.

Second, if the above does not work, is to extract the archive, follow the manual install instructions into an empty directory -- not your game directory, and when you're done, zip that directory up and install it as if it was fomod ready as in the first step.

Manually installing things is terrible unless you have no choice, and there are only two things I know of where you don't have a choice -- NVSE and ENB -- because they install some things into the root FONV directory, one level above 'data'.

The 'make from directory' thing is... kinda wonky. Avoid using it.

Link to comment

I read somewhere that the safest way to install things always is the manual way because NMM sometimes messes up installs. Maybe that was a bug in an way earlier version of that program, I really don't recall that but that's pretty much why I sometimes tend to install things manually, just to make sure they are installed right and it's not just a potential error caused by a 3rd party program if something decides not to work.

Somewhere on Nexus there was a alternative GameStart mod that basically starts you at the top of the hill at GoodSprings and allows you to set your name etc without going through the DocMitchel Gamestart, might wnt to try that.

I doubt that'll do much since I was able to load Goodsprings once; I couldn't have created the third save if that wasn't the case.

I think at this point I should just download the game again and hope that the only issue is some really old leftovers from the past that were still lingering somewhere.

I can't stress enough how much I appreciate every single help and helper who was willing to spare some time to write here. When I created this thread I actually expected to get 1, maybe 2, responses, so this is greatly appreciated guys, thank you all so much.

Now this isn't really concerned to your issue, but I was taking a look at the load order and... Did you install PN with FOMOD? I don't run EVE so my installation is different, but I usually run only the All DLC patch and not the single DLCs patches.

On a side note, I played a long time with a lot of mods and it was usual for me having those kinds of issues in the past both in Skyrim and NV (only FO3 was always stable), the most annoying were the infinite load order and the continuous crashes, I'm surprised I still was playing even with a crash every 30 seconds... But since I stopped using heavy textures, mod that spawn creatures and generally reduced my load order to the essential mods, I never had issues anymore and everything runs always smooth. I know this sounds like saying "the only way to not risk a car accident is not driving a car"... but I just wanted to say that probably with a long list of big mods it could happen sometimes to miss some detail about compatibiIity or load order.

Link to comment

I think that actually was just because of EVE. There was no patch for the more compact version of PN or something like this. I read up on it at the point of installation but my memory isn't the best, sorry. I do remember though that it basically didn't make much of a difference, that it's just more .esp's loading and a little "messier" because of this.

I know what you're saying too, I tend to think that way myself and I actually thought that the overall mods in my list is fairly slim to what I could potentially install. I will slim it down even further on the next attempt too, but all in all it's actually not that much mods, theres a lot of patches in that list or multiple .esp's that are just from one mod.
