Should I buy starfield If I didnt get into Skyrim?

I played skyrim, enjoyed it for a few hours but it just felt too oldschool for me (Im not a fan of old "classic" games) I enjoyed the sandbox approach and the fact that I could go anywhere I wanted but the quests just felt boring. I also played fallout 3 and also liked it but then, I got stuck on yet another quest and stopped playing. I'm not a big fan of magic and dragons but the space exploration seems more interesting, I also played rdr2 and loved how there were little secrets hidden everywhere which made me go into every house I come across, does starfield give a similiar feeling? And are the quests not as stupid as they were in fallout 3 where you could fuck yourself up on a milion ways?

I doubt you'll like it based on what you've said. It doesn't have the exploration of Skyrim or Fallout 3, and the quests are done in the same style. Maybe if you are a passionate sci fi fan you will like it or maybe building ships will be your thing. The combat is pretty exciting when it is all set up nicely but that requires mods and tweaking gameplay settings.

- spielt ohne Mods "Skyrim"

:joy:

Thing to keep in mind:

Very hard to find review of Starfield that are not weird angry people, or people making money off mods and reviews.

I would say, some systems like combat and ship building are better or are new from older BGS games. Graphic are a lot better than older BGS games. Base building is I think not as good as in modded Fallout, but base mods for Starfield still are drafts.

There are also problems with game. Quest quality is very Bethesda. Some are fun, some are silly, some just have lot of walking and talking. Economy and exploration systems do not have good balance. There are lot of ways to make money, but after about level 20, so much money that no motivation to get more. I think too many different ingredients for crafting and system for finding them should have been different with less time in menus and more flying in space or on planet with danger nearby (alien life mostly passive and easy to defeat). I would have added way to scan whole system at once and to sort places by resource for easier finding in mid/late game, but Todd Howard did not call me to ask.

I would say, if you want to try, think of it as open world spaceship combat and FPS shooter with some craft and RPG systems. And side game where you walk around empty planets looking for things (I do this listening to chillwave and high, like sci fi cozy game).

Skyrim was a huge letdown for me after Oblivion - the main quest was bland at best, the side quests not much better, the UI was completely unusable without heavy modding, and the environment was kind of generic.   When it first came out, I played for maybe six or seven hours and then put it away because the UI was so frustratingly bad.   About three years later I tried it again, found it just as unplayable, and broke a hard rule I'd had for years - never mod a game until playing it through once completely, just to fix the UI to start playing the game.   I got maybe 30 hours in that time, but the story just wasn't engaging me, and I put it away again for more years.  I finally began to get interested when I started heavily modding the game several years later, and every once in a while go back to it and try some new modding thing... but despite now having put probably over a thousand hours into it, I've never even come close to finishing the main quest.

Starfield, for me at least, was much much better.   The UI was usable out of the box, the storylines far more interesting, and some of the side quests are quite good (although others not so much...).    The story was compelling enough for me to finish it through NG+3 without any mods at all.   Your milage may vary, but you definitely shouldn't dismiss Starfield based on your like or dislike of Skyrim.   Sadly, it's modding scene is progressing slower than Skyrim's modding scene did... but the progress is happening and I suspect in another few years it's going to become an even more popular modding sandbox than Skyrim... it just needs a lot of groundwork done first.

Thank you so much for sharing.

Spoiler

If Skyrim didn’t click for you, Starfield might still be worth a try, especially if you enjoy sci-fi themes more than fantasy. While both are Bethesda games with similar open-world mechanics, Starfield introduces space exploration, futuristic tech, and interplanetary travel, which could feel fresh. However, if you didn’t like Bethesda’s storytelling or gameplay structure in general, Starfield might not change your mind. Watch a few gameplay videos or try it via a subscription service before buying. It could surprise you if the setting better matches your preferences. You know ... I had an epiphany after buying the remaster Mass Effect Legendary Edition anthology on Steam.

It just kept running through my mind how strikingly similar both Mass Effect 1 and Starfield were and how, save for space combat, Mass Effect was just as enjoyable or even the more enjoyable action RPG in certain aspects.

User Interface? Equally clunky, feels equally flowless and like things were bolted on as the devs went along with no real second pass.

Loot? Both suffer the exact same problem of handing out not memorable unique quest rewards, but color reskins of base items that are rewarded to the player too often and too promatically. In both games you can also break the economy by breaking down this trash loot laughably early.

Combat? Both suffer the exact same problem of starting off feeling like something of a well tuned shooter that rather quickly turns into bulletsponge hell, with difficulty only determining what level of bulletsponge hell you want.

The AI's decision making depth?, i.e. shooting for thirty seconds, running to a questionable piece of cover, repeat? Exact same. But at least in Mass Effect everyone was constantly shooting off powers and you could pause the action and tell your companions where to move so it felt like something even vaguely tactical was going on. Let's not even talk about AI outside of combat. With Starfield, any trace of *Oblivion*'s fantasy immersive sim ambitions with it's Radiant AI are well and truly snuffed out.

The town hubs? The Citadel sells the illusion of being more alive than any of the cities in starfield. And, pre-map patch, *both were about the same difficulty to navigate through*

The graphics? With the retooled lighting, higher resolution textures, and timeless aesthetic, *Mass Effect 1* is the more visually striking game more often than not.

The explorable planet surfaces? *Aggravatingly the same*. Just a perlin noise generated height map with some generic assets thrown around to collect and scan.

Quests on those planets? Well, at least Starfield can generate as many shitty little premade asset forts to storm as your heart could ever desire at the Bounty Board.

Quests? While there are less of them, Mass Effect's choice heavy quests allows you to truly interrogate its three dimensional setting and characters like an expert D&D dungeon master would. Meanwhile, Bethesda's exceptionally incurious and cynical lead writer Emil Pagruliamo is that particularly egregious type of DM that just orates their *very deep and important* novel at you and won't let you roll any dice or ask any questions or have any fun.

The Dialogue system. Is. Still. A player and an NPC. Anchoring themselves in place. And them awkwardly staring directly into your soul. And the NPC making the same six or so pre-canned animations and faces. While you respond with the exact same 4 dialogue responses and maybe a flashy especially charismatic 5th response just  like. you. did. back. in. 2007's Mass Effect.

And I just kept thinking, man ... 17 years. The release date of these games are 17 years apart.

Is Starfield a bad game? No. But man, we should be demanding games that can procedurally generate an entire 30 hour Mass Effect 1 quality action RPG at this point, the setting, the planets, the factions, the alien races, recent history, historical figures, settlements, the main driving plot hook, the main quest, long multi-chain side quests generated in realtime in response to in-game actions from the player, the all of it. Not just ... *Mass Effect 1 again but reheated in the microwave for a little too long*.

Dwarf Fortress, Caves of Qud, and RimWorld can procedurally generate whole fantasy worlds and their histories, and those games were made by 1-2 indie developers in a cave with a box of scraps.

*Please* boycott this game with your wallet and give some more deserving game a chance. How about City of Doubt, an indie game that actually procedurally generates a whole GTA sized city of nooks and crannies to explore and murder cases to solve. Order how about Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 or Baldur's Gate 3, RPGs that actually respond to every decision you make like a game should in the year 2025?

I like Bethesda games so I know I'm biased in saying that Starfield is worth getting. But based on your post it seems like you might not get into it since Starfield, at its core, is still a "Bethesda" game. Kind of hard to explain it until you've played enough of their games to know what it's like. Open world RPG with sandbox elements and some action gameplay slapped in. If this is not your cup of tea, which seems like it isn't, then you're not going to enjoy Starfield even with its space exploration themes, outpost and ship building, guns, and immersion.

About should you buy a game or not, my friends and I think it is better to watch the players' videos on YouTube or download a learning version to try it out (of course, remember to support the genuine version after you decide you want to play it😄).

No don't buy it. Maybe at some point it will get the oblivion treatment and undergo a substantive improvement.

How long did it take Oblivion to get remaster? So I guess, what, look for a Starfield remaster in 2040? Pretty safe bet to say we'll see TESVI and FO5 before a Starfield remaster.

Ignore the above. People have different tastes. There is a tiny core of players that LOVE Starfield. I'm not one of them, but I acknowledge they exist.

Get Gamepass for PC. It's free for a month. Download Starfield and other games you want to try out. Play them. Make your decision then.
