Starting a new game for a new mod

I really like to play SL-modded skyrim. My character as of now has more than 80 hours on her, and recently DD got an update. It requires a brand new game.

Yes, I can save the face preset, add my skills and equipment via console, complete necessary quests, but... It wouldn't be the same. Some characters may still be alive, I'd have different reputation (SLSF) and different little quests completed. I really want the new DD version, but damn I can't get myself to starting a new game.

So how do you guys feel about starting a new game after that much investment? Any advices or life stories?

I mod as much or more than I play so for me a new game is just the status-quo . I do have multiple profiles in Vortex so if I want to play with some mods in this profile I can if I don't I change profiles and a whole new load order is there. One of the biggest advantages to Vortex is each profile can have its own load order and saves but that is just me I run around three profiles all have different saves and load orders.

 Eh, part of the course.

There is a bit of dichotomy - its not really a good stable build if you cant go for a long playthrough, but soon enough you get an itch to change and add again.

Over the entire time modding TES5, i went for LVL80+ twice. Restarting is a bit of meditative action by now. And MCM recorder and SLATE reapplication alone take almost an hour.

Thou, do check the changelogs. Often mod updates arent worth it.

When mod authors tells you a mod or update needs a new save, believe them. If not you're on your own testing and troubleshooting your save.

You don't need to rush updates, if you're too attached to a character to stop playing that save and start something new maybe don't risk it.

Only played with the character for 80 hours... and you're complaining about a restart without which a mod update wouldn't work.

You just have to decide -> do you play Skyrim or do you modify it

I could understand that if you've played with the character for 200 or 300 hours and have basically completed 80% of all possible quests... but your character is basically still "brand new" - it "still smells like a factory"

I have the exact same dilemma. I do not have an advice to give, I can just share what my plan is.

I am running my Skyrim modded game using MO2 organizer and I opted for the "standalone" install. That allows me some incredible value, as I can have multiple instances of the game and try different configurations. For instance, I have my game installed under a D:\SKYRIM_INSTALL and I have everything there, including mods and save game files. Now, I have plenty of SSD capacity, so I have copied D:\SKYRIM_INSTALL to D:\SKYRIM_INSTALL_A, B and C.

You understand where I am going with this. Now, the D:\SKYRIM_INSTALL is always the instances to run and play. However, you can rename it, and make the instance A or B or C to become your main. At that point, you can mod further, Bodyslide and do what you want. You run and test, and if you are happy, that becomes you new MASTER.

My all point is, if you have the chance, do test the new DD release and see if it is worth to use it. That is what I am going to do. And if I am not happy, I will go back to my other instance with a click of a rename.

Best of luck.

I start a new game whenever I feel that my current character has done enough for Tamriel, but I played vanilla on xbox from release till 2020 when I started modding.

I have done the entire game three times, which is not a lot compared to some, talking to everyone to see if I could find another task.

I had so many saves that I ran out of space for them.

Now I play for fun, not completionism, I see what kind of misadventures I can naturally get my character into & out of during exploration.

I have been to spots just jogging around that I had not ever been to when I was grinding on completing the game,

Now every new game I start I play a male, then next game a female, these mods, then those mods, so on and so forth.

The only thing that gets to me is the setup of the MCM prior to starting but this mod helps...https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/61719

So then I hated starting a new game, now...no big deal.
