Picsel's Spicy Periodicals

View File

A collection of new adult magazines, dynamically placed into the game world.

Picsel’s Spicy Periodicals

In the world this mod represents, our sporadic moral discomfort with sexualized advertising would seem hilariously antiquated. Nora’s society had long since progressed the trend to its obvious conclusion. Coupled with the tacit approval of a government desperate for future soldiers, advertising and erotica became essentially synonymous. From suggestive poses, to explicit nudity, to outright intercourse, a flood of indecent marketing fueled the era’s consumer frenzy. No surprise that even publishers of ostensibly non-sexual magazines should succumb to the trend. For a culture so awash in salacious imagery, the merest whiff of prudishness might tar an otherwise upstanding corporation as communist sympathizers.

Main Features

This mod adds over 270 brand new, adult-themed magazines to the Commonwealth. These aren’t intended to be porno mags. Rather, most are everyday hobby, lifestyle, and fantasy periodicals with explicit cover art and themes. All covers were crafted exclusively for this mod by the brilliant @picsel, whose other work may be familiar to LL users already.

You can find the magazines in one of two ways: in containers via script-injected leveled lists, or dynamically placed in the open world as you explore. MCM settings let you adjust the drop rates for both methods. No cells were edited in the making of this mod. No vanilla records were overwritten. Cross-mod compatibility should be nearly universal. Last but not least, the plugin is esl-flagged for ease of inclusion in mod-heavy game profiles.

The Magazines

Spoiler

Magazines are divided into four groups. Each group uses different leveled lists and drop locations. The “general” group is the largest, so these magazines appear in the most containers and on a common piece of furniture (beds).

General Group

Containers: Dressers, desks, file cabinets, mailboxes, trash cans, news stands

Drop Location: Beds (must be valid sleeping location)

Titles and Themes:

Beyond The Planes- comics about parallel universes and pocket dimensions

Business Times- corporate interests and office life

Fantasy Magazine- visual tales of fantastical worlds and events

Pawprint- petplay and animorphics

Publick Occurrences- Piper’s articles about wasteland life

Saturday Night- Boston nightlife guide

Starstruck- futurism, cyber, and space fantasy comics

The Catwalk- clothing and fashion

Today’s Housewife- housekeeping and homemaking tips

Travel + Leisure- exotic tours and getaways

Into The Underworld- stories of dark fantasy realms

Kitchen Group

Containers: Coolers, lunch pails, lootable refrigerators

Drop Location: kitchen stoves (not cooking stoves) and kitchen bar counters

Titles and Themes:

Imbibe- alcohol, cocktails, and bars

Yummy- food and cooking

Raider Group

Containers: none

Drop Location: steamer trunks (aka boss trunks)

Titles and Themes:

Raiding Like An Overboss- advice by raiders, for raiders

Tools Group

Containers: tool boxes, tool cases, garage cabinets

Drop Location: armor workbenches

Titles and Themes:

DIY- home projects, mechanical projects, and do-it-yourself

The Toy Insider- the hottest toys for grown-ups

Q&A

Spoiler

Q) Do these magazines apply perks or other bonuses?

A) No, they are strictly for visual enjoyment and decorating your magazine racks.

Q) I just installed the mod, but there are no magazines in containers. What’s wrong?

A) Containers that already had loot before installing the mod will not be affected. For example, if you have a quickstart save outside Vault 111, none of the containers in Sanctuary will include magazines. Go to a new area or wait for the cell to reset. The same is true if you change the MCM settings for container loot chances.

Q) I rarely find magazines in certain containers (e.g. tool boxes or lunch pails) even though my chance setting is 100%. What’s wrong?

A) Many containers have a maximum amount of loot in their leveled list. This maximum is often reached before a magazine is added. Also, some containers are placed with an empty loot table, and will never contain a magazine regardless of your settings.

Q) I found a piece of furniture that should have a magazine on top, but no magazine spawned. What happened?

A) Some “furniture” is part of a unified collection of objects, or even part of the world mesh, rather than a discrete object. The finder function does not locate them because they are actually a different object with the texture of the original furniture. Another possible explanation is that this mod already found the furniture once before and tried to place a magazine. Any piece of furniture is only checked once, after which it cannot be used for a magazine location again (note: this lockout may reset if the cell resets).

Q) Do magazines appear on settlement furniture that I build?

A) Yes, if you leave the area and return.

Q) I’ve found all but one or two magazines and I swear they’re missing. Can you check that they’re all included?

A) Yes, they are all included. With the settings cranked to max drop rates for everything, and an absurd number of hours running around the world, all magazines were eventually found during testing.

Q) Have you considered any de-duplication functions, so we don’t see multiple copies of the same magazine?

A) Considered and rejected. Way too much hassle for the result. Also unrealistic since the real world contains multiple copies of magazines.

Modder Notes

Spoiler

I tried to make this mod easy to translate via patch. Obviously the magazine text can’t be replaced. However, all notifications appearing in game are shown via message forms from the plugin. Script overwrites are not necessary.

Hard Requirements

-Vanilla Fallout 4

-MCM

This right here is the best explanation i had ever seen of the world i like to play my fallout in:

"I
n the world this mod represents, our sporadic moral discomfort with sexualized advertising would seem hilariously antiquated. For a culture so awash in salacious imagery, the merest whiff of prudishness might tar an otherwise upstanding corporation as communist sympathizers."

In short "promiscuity is our civil duty"

Awesome mod and esl'd what else can we ask for? Thank you for this!

Yep. I have half a dozen of these spicy magazine collections/treasure hunts...and its not about the buffs some give or the erotic art others provide me with (although they are appreciated), its about the magazines and covers themselves! I Just love finding another one and pouring over the cover before it goes on the shelf!

(Just posting this whilst downloading and installing this mod. 100 brand new magazines is just an epic mod to find here today!)

This seems like a wonderful idea.

also I especially was intruiged by the idea of a Publick Occurrences copy.

I feel  a lot can be done with that like full fledged article by PIper interviewing a girl (sole survivor or otherwise) who was a raiders pet for  a couple of years, before she escaped when thier camp was destroyed by another gang and she avoided getting pressed into service by them (no brilliant self rescue and subesequent revenge story here that so much of modern silly fiction seems to insist on)

And this interview would have a tone of "Ah a story from the wasteland for me to titillate my readers with", rather than the whiney, "oh wei" tone current social journalism.

Posted (edited)

This was a lot of fun!!! 😅

My favorite issues of all, was Publick Occurrence,s No 3 "The day we got caught by raiders", where Piper put in a very nice illustration to titillate her readers with the misadventure, she and some female vault dweller had to endure together when raiders got a gold of them.

No, "oh, weih" journalism, there!

Public Occurrence No 9 was also very nice especially since that was clearly Piper in the illustration of the papers implied story content.

Was No 6 supposed to be Piper too?

"Today's Housewife"  No 13 ,  "Travel and Leisure" No 3 and Catwalk No 7 deserve extra mention too for their incredibly artwork as well.

Travel and Leisure No 5 "Outdoors Bike tour" was also quite clever I thought.

The entire "raiding like an overboss" series was a great idea too!..  though maybe an additional issue with a market full of chained beauties on display for sale as a "business guide" would have been both nice and appropriate. No sex needed to make it "hot" , just the implications are plenty.

Thank you so much I will keep this loaded in all my playthroughs no, no matter if they are "serious" (as a guy and hero saving the Commonwealth (I can still collect these and create libraries for my settlements of them to support settlement reading and culture.) or "playful" ones (as pretty girl with my nice college years face and figure, bouncing from one (mis) adventure to another).

Wow, dude! Thanks for making this. I'm always interested in new magazine mods because as others have said, I'm a bit of a magazine hoarder. One question though. Should this mod only be used on a new playthrough, or is it safe to add to an existing save?

It shouldn't hurt anything.  Be aware that containers with existing loot won't have magazines.  Only new containers, or those that have reset.

Just re-installed FO4 and there was an older mod that did the same thing. You would find porn mags in mailboxes throughout the wasteland and Ivy would have a crack about each one. I loved that mod but have no idea if it even exists anymore.

I'll give this one a try.

Love this mod. Thank you.

Are you planning to create a new mod with new magazines?

If picsel wants to make more magazines, it's much more likely that I would add them to this existing mod instead of making a whole new one.  🙂

CTD report... Not sure if it's a conflict with some other mod I'm using (at first I thought it was a bad sound replacer, but after uninstalling that I started running into the same problem again after a while).

Easiest way to recreate it in isolation is to use the console's placethere command to deposit a copy of Today's Housewife No. 9 (0x818) on the ground and then pick it up. It shows me the feature object like normal, but when I click to dismiss that, about one second later the game crashes out to desktop.

Not all magazines placed by this mod exhibit the problem, but when I hit one which does it's consistent (I can save before picking up, and then repeatedly re-load that save and get the game to crash by taking the magazine every time). Like I said, this mod probably isn't the culprit, and the crashlogs vary a bit with each reproduction, but they're always inconclusive from what I can see.

Pre-NG (1.10.163) game engine. Crashlog with latest Buffout 4 and analysis with latest CLASSIC both attached:

I'm not sure, I can't replicate the issue using pt for the magazine, nor for dropping it and recollecting from inventory.  I tried in my full save and also in my less-modded test profile.  Does it happen with other magazines, either vanilla or modded?

I haven't gotten it to occur with mags from the base game or any other mods yet, but that may simply be a matter of statistics since I'm running into way more of these.

I can't think of what would be occurring after pickup to trigger a crash though. Also CLASSIC keeps suggesting that the crashlog might point to a script-related cause, but I looked through this mod and it definitely doesn't attach any scripts of its own to the magazines. I suppose it's possible some other mod I have installed is listening for inventory change events related to magazine keywords or something...
