About This File
A collection of new adult magazines, dynamically placed into the game world.
Picsel’s Spicy Periodicals
In the world this mod represents, our sporadic moral discomfort with sexualized advertising would seem hilariously antiquated. Nora’s society had long since progressed the trend to its obvious conclusion. Coupled with the tacit approval of a government desperate for future soldiers, advertising and erotica became essentially synonymous. From suggestive poses, to explicit nudity, to outright intercourse, a flood of indecent marketing fueled the era’s consumer frenzy. No surprise that even publishers of ostensibly non-sexual magazines should succumb to the trend. For a culture so awash in salacious imagery, the merest whiff of prudishness might tar an otherwise upstanding corporation as communist sympathizers.
Main Features
This mod adds over 100 brand new, adult-themed magazines to the Commonwealth. These aren’t intended to be porno mags. Rather, most are everyday hobby, lifestyle, and fantasy periodicals with explicit cover art and themes. All covers were crafted exclusively for this mod by the brilliant @picsel, whose other work may be familiar to LL users already.
You can find the magazines in one of two ways: in containers via script-injected leveled lists, or dynamically placed in the open world as you explore. MCM settings let you adjust the drop rates for both methods. No cells were edited in the making of this mod. No vanilla records were overwritten. Cross-mod compatibility should be nearly universal. Last but not least, the plugin is esl-flagged for ease of inclusion in mod-heavy game profiles.
The Magazines
Magazines are divided into four groups. Each group uses different leveled lists and drop locations. The “general” group is the largest, so these magazines appear in the most containers and on a common piece of furniture (beds).
General Group
Containers: Dressers, desks, file cabinets, mailboxes, trash cans, news stands
Drop Location: Beds (must be valid sleeping location)
Titles and Themes:
Beyond The Planes- comics about parallel universes and pocket dimensions
Business Times- corporate interests and office life
Fantasy Magazine- visual tales of fantastical worlds and events
Publick Occurrences- Piper’s articles about wasteland life
The Catwalk- clothing and fashion
Today’s Housewife- housekeeping and homemaking tips
Travel + Leisure- exotic tours and getaways
Into The Underworld- stories of dark fantasy realms
Kitchen Group
Containers: Coolers, lunch pails, lootable refrigerators
Drop Location: kitchen stoves (not cooking stoves) and kitchen bar counters
Titles and Themes:
Imbibe- alcohol, cocktails, and bars
Yummy- food and cooking
Raider Group
Containers: none
Drop Location: steamer trunks (aka boss trunks)
Titles and Themes:
Raiding Like An Overboss- advice by raiders, for raiders
Tools Group
Containers: tool boxes, tool cases, garage cabinets
Drop Location: armor workbenches
Titles and Themes:
DIY- home projects, mechanical projects, and do-it-yourself
Q&A
Q) Do these magazines apply perks or other bonuses?
A) No, they are strictly for visual enjoyment and decorating your magazine racks.
Q) I just installed the mod, but there are no magazines in containers. What’s wrong?
A) Containers that already had loot before installing the mod will not be affected. For example, if you have a quickstart save outside Vault 111, none of the containers in Sanctuary will include magazines. Go to a new area or wait for the cell to reset. The same is true if you change the MCM settings for container loot chances.
Q) I rarely find magazines in certain containers (e.g. tool boxes or lunch pails) even though my chance setting is 100%. What’s wrong?
A) Many containers have a maximum amount of loot in their leveled list. This maximum is often reached before a magazine is added. Also, some containers are placed with an empty loot table, and will never contain a magazine regardless of your settings.
Q) I found a piece of furniture that should have a magazine on top, but no magazine spawned. What happened?
A) Some “furniture” is part of a unified collection of objects, or even part of the world mesh, rather than a discrete object. The finder function does not locate them because they are actually a different object with the texture of the original furniture. Another possible explanation is that this mod already found the furniture once before and tried to place a magazine. Any piece of furniture is only checked once, after which it cannot be used for a magazine location again (note: this lockout may reset if the cell resets).
Q) Do magazines appear on settlement furniture that I build?
A) Yes, if you leave the area and return.
Q) I’ve found all but one or two magazines and I swear they’re missing. Can you check that they’re all included?
A) Yes, they are all included. With the settings cranked to max drop rates for everything, and an absurd number of hours running around the world, all magazines were eventually found during testing.
Q) Have you considered any de-duplication functions, so we don’t see multiple copies of the same magazine?
A) Considered and rejected. Way too much hassle for the result. Also unrealistic since the real world contains multiple copies of magazines.
Modder Notes
I tried to make this mod easy to translate via patch. Obviously the magazine text can’t be replaced. However, all notifications appearing in game are shown via message forms from the plugin. Script overwrites are not necessary.
Hard Requirements
-Vanilla Fallout 4
-MCM
