I'm about to give up on Skyrim

It seems that a lot of the authors of my favorite mods have given up on keeping up with the numerous versions of Skyrim.  I am hoping that perhaps some modder would get permission to udate a few mods to work on the GOG AE version.

"Loot and Degradation SE" https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/21744?tab=files

"Are you There SE"  https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/27758?tab=files&file_id=195909

"AddItemMenu - Ultimate Mod Explorer" https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/17563?tab=posts

Loot and Degradation is kinda a must have.  I would prioritize this.

There, of course are others.  I'm starting to wonder if I really want to play Skyrim again.  I stopped playing when Bethesda released the AE version.  I figured they would screw everything up.  Guess I was right.  It's release on GOG gave me hope.  Oh well.

You could try LE if you have it. They stopped updating that awhile ago and those mods work just fine there. There is also a game regressor I think its called that sets the game back to a version of your choosing. If not you could try the waiting game and tide yourself over with other games and I'm sure Bethesda will eventually stop slacking and get to work on Elder Scrolls 6 and somebody will continue mods like this.

Ya, I tried LE a couple years ago.  NMM didn't support the els files people were using and it was way outdated anyway.  So I tried Vortex.  I spent nearly a week installing mods and when I played Skyrim, there were textures missing.  One of the first mods I installed was a hi-def texture mod.  I figured I would just uninstall it and re-install.  After I uninstalled it, Vortex wiped ever single script.  I don't even think there were any scripts associated with that mod.  So, after spending a week on modding I just couldn't stand the thought of starting over.  So that was last time I even looked at Skyrim, until now.  Guess I should have learned how to use MO.

And my fear about the next Tes game is that it will be as hard to mod as Fallout 4.  The way Bethesda is going, I don't have high hopes.  With Microsoft  now owning it, perhaps it might get better?  Ya, no high hopes.

Mod Organizer seems to work for me and I still play LE.

As for the next Elder Scrolls it isn't me hoping for the next Elder Scrolls as it is me hoping Bethesda uses that as an excuse to stop updating their dumb fishing minigame in the current one. I really need to stop using subtext to get my point across.

LOL.  Yep, I don't delve too deeply into what is said.  I've become a more literal person.  Hmmm... sad.

Is called downgrade patcher and only works for Steam, not GOG. There is nothing pre-AE on GOG to revert back to.

Can't you transfer GOG games you bought over to your Steam library? I was looking at doing this one time.

Edit; Nope, you can't. You can add Steam games to your GOG library, but not the other way 'round.

That has nothing to do with NMM. Skyrim LE doesn't use esl files.

They didn't screw up anything. Sorry to put it that way but .. it was you all along
If you wanna mod and enjoy skyrim, don't get the gog garbage. People will never learn, hah.

Get older versions of skyrim from certain sites, or simply get new mods and have a new playthrough - I mean that's what modding's all about. New and exiting content.

Did that a few times and i'm hapy that i did for that i found so many new, amazing mods that way.

You should've stopped updating skyrim se on steam, if you had it. As most mod authors always suggest.

I haven't been updating to the 'new' version of skyrim fishing and still, all my mods, even newer ones work perfectly fine.

And even if you went for the update, there are downgrade patchers for steam. So .. yeah, don't get gog.

Well - I wouldn't have put it that "hard" - but ultimately I agree on "GoG"

---

So you've already given up problems with Votex after 1 week ... no - with such an attitude you don't need to start with "Mod Manager 2" - nor do you even have to deal with the important Skyrim mods on this page

my tip -> leave it - to modify Sykrim
point

Do you know how to read?  From your comment, I don't think you do.

Ya, you're probably right.  I was playing Fallout 4 at the time, so I may have gotten a bit confused.  But NMM still didn't support els files, at least not the version I was using.  I was using an older version.

I'm currently using Vortex.  Haven't had any problems with it so far.  I just don't care for the virtual install.  It's great for getting things to work right, but I would like it if once you got everything working, they had something like a hard deployment, where it puts all the mods in the folders, were they belong.  It just seems more orderly that way.  And it would give me more of a sense of control.  But that's just me.  I have issues.

Ok, how do you stop updates on Steam?  The last I heard, you had to make a backup of your game so when it updates, you copy it back and just keep the new acf file.  I haven't messed with Steam for a long time, so things might have changed.  The forced updates is why I don't buy games on Steam any more.

Go to the game properties, updates tab and select "Only update this game when i launch it". Then, launch the game though the Mod manager of your choice. Mod organizer is the one i use and the game doesn't update when you open the game. Also, i would keep a backup in an external HD or something.

Cheers!

Thanks.  I don't think I've ever launched a game through a mod manager before, that is until recently, with Vortex.

if you run skse, which is mandatory for most mods you prob. use, the skse shortcut doesn't trigger the update, if it's set to "only update on launch"..

Make a shortcut for your skse exe and delete the original skyrimlauncher-shortcut to prevent slipups

Use downgrade patcher to get to the old 1.5.97 version. You will accomplish two things: have a version that works with most old mods, stop steam from wanting to update your game to 1.6+. Once you do it, you'll have functional SE version while making Steam think you have AE version. You can then start the game however you want.

Thanks.  I don't remember what I was thinking back then.  I may not have realized that launching through SKSE didn't initiate an update.  Those slipups accured usually when I had just woke up or if I'd been up all night.  I'd hit the launch button through Steam.  Bad habit from use of other games.

I'm not familiar with the downgrade patcher.  I'll have to look it up.   Thanks.

It's on the Nexus. Make sure to read the instructions carefully and pick the correct file for the version you want.

It will only work with Steam version. If you have GOG, you're screwed.

You may find this handy as well:
