Jerbsinator Posted November 18, 2011 Posted November 18, 2011 And this is when I don't even own Skyrim yet. After seeing the livestream IGN had on release Oblivion just looks like a horrible piece of crap compared to this. The only redeeming factor that Oblivion has is the great body mods and sex mods but otherwise gameplay wise, graphic wise and fun wise it looks inferior in every way. I almost feel dirty playing Oblivion now...and I don't even have Skyrim yet!
Kodiak Posted November 18, 2011 Posted November 18, 2011 I have developed an appriciation for the seperation between the two actually. Skyrim, still in its vanilla state on my machine, is proving to be an enjoyable play experiance. I can't say that for Oblivion. I havent actually "played" Oblivion now for almost a year. Just couldnt get into it. The way it is now, I go to Skyrim for adventure. I return to Oblivion when I just want to see some digital tits bounce and have my naughty chocolate elf get raped by some dogs and the occasional horse. Two seperate title with thier own purpose.. I like it.
Evilokami Posted November 18, 2011 Posted November 18, 2011 I played oblivion the other day to try out that cursed armor quest. while that was fun. when I had to fight stuff it was like "oh god... what is even going on"
Kashked Posted November 18, 2011 Posted November 18, 2011 I have played quite a bit of Oblivion, but I have never reached past lvl 14. Basically every time I played I felt so limited by the system of skills and leveling that by the time I reached Master Jauffre (and I have done this a lot of times...) I either started a new char or quit playing. A couple of times I reached as far as Kvatch, seldom much longer than that. Skyrim dosn't limit you in the way that I found so constricting. At level 19 I started turning my pure warrior into a mage, by lvl 31 I am kicking dragons ass with just my spells.
TheTraveler Posted November 18, 2011 Posted November 18, 2011 I MIGHT say the topic when the lovers mods and race mods come out. Maybe. If i can get a diablo elf look alike in Skyrim i'm so down fo not going back to oblivion... But of course this is all dependant on the VERY large japanese modding scene taking to skyrim like they did to oblivion.
afro-herbalist Posted November 18, 2011 Posted November 18, 2011 I think I still love both games man. I've not touched Oblivion in a long time now, but I still remember all the good times I've had playing it and discovering interesting sh*t, finding weird glitches, insane mods etc. Like TheTraveller said, if the Japanese modders take hold of Skyrim on the same scale as they did with Oblivion (and why wouldn't they!), then Oblivion will probably just become the less played game, just getting back on it every now & then for the memories. I say that, but since Oblivion came out, I never touched Morrowind again (as far as I remember), so only time will tell!
dewguru Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 I still have Oblivion installed and will give it a try when CLS is finished. Outside of that Skyrim and FONV with SWTOR should meet my needs for the next year.
Honesty Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 I have to disagree. I also have a different type of like/love for both Oblivion and Skyrim. My Oblivion game, with QTP3+OBGE+OBGE-WATER+everyothersingleextremelybeautifulreplacertypeofmod = a VERY beautiful Oblivion in 2560x1600. I must say, my game is still jaw-droppingly gorgeous. Add the fact in now, we don't have to use XEO anymore! Someone finally made a MBP2ch NPC replacer .. and I must say.. it looks fantastic so far.. still a WIP -- which means with all of these beautiful world replacers; we finally have very great looking NPC's to go along with it. Add the fact in there is some VERY pretty/nice music mods out there, that adds to a much more enjoyable experience. --WHEW .. finally done defending Oblivion-- tl;dr I love Skyrim more, but I'll always have a very dear place in my heart for Oblivion.
Shantotto Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 Could never stand Oblivion myself aside from a platform to check out fun mods. Aside from the gameplay issues (which I think Skyrim also has), the world is so incredibly boring. Skyrim is a big step forward in this regard. You can just sink your teeth into the culture and atmosphere of it all a bit more, similar to Morrowind. Daggerfall is still my favorite in these when it comes to the RPG gameplay (never played Arena though). Doubt I will ever play Oblivion again unless a mod shows up that *really* interests me.
polluxval Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 taking graphics away. ill glady play oblivion over and over again, ill play skitym till im sick of it, return to obli and then again to skyrim and so on, until elder scrolls 6 its out. xD
Sand_Dragon Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 And this is when I don't even own Skyrim yet. After seeing the livestream IGN had on release Oblivion just looks like a horrible piece of crap compared to this. The only redeeming factor that Oblivion has is the great body mods and sex mods but otherwise gameplay wise' date=' graphic wise and fun wise it looks inferior in every way. I almost feel dirty playing Oblivion now...and I don't even have Skyrim yet! [/quote'] It doesn't help that Oblivion is quite a few years older than Skyrim, of course. I think Bethesda learned from their experience with FO3 and after seeing what Obsidian did with FNV.
ronttu Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 Beth also incorporated quite a few fixes to Skyrim from the most popular gameplay (fix) mods for Oblivion, so either they're not as dumb as the unfinished state of their every release makes them look, or at least some of the devs actually plays the games they make and gives a shit That said, I doubt I'll bother running Oblivion myself anymore.. I've exhausted all the quests, seen what it has to offer, and always thought Cyrodiil was really dull compared to Vvardenfell, even if the graphics were a lot better. Telvanni mushrooms and ashlands over the Cyrodiilic forests any day. Besides, Ordinators were awesome. With Skyrim, the frozen regions and general bleakness of the landscape somehow feel more alive and interesting, dunno why.. Edit: I also find that I don't actually fast travel at all. I do use the carriages, but those are kind of different a deal in the long run. I even walked with overloaded inventory for two in-game days because I couldn't bear the thought of ditching any of the valuable loot, heh.
Ryanhabs Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 While I do enjoy the wonderful landscapes Skyrim has to offer, I do hope for a mod to come along eventually to turn the southern most parts of skyrim in to a more lush landscape... The pretty snow and generl bleakness of it tends to wear on me a bit. What can I say... irl I moved from northern US to South Carolina to avoid the snow, I don't want everything covered in that shit in my game as well. LOL
Drugas Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 I don't like Skyrim's gameplay. I just don't. I'm pretty sure in a few weeks you'll all decide Skyrim's gameplay sucks pretty bad too. Guess what though? Skyrim has things oblivion doesn't core into it's gameplay. I can see this expanding into some very nice adult-themed mods. I am very confident that Skyrim's adult mods will blow Oblivion's out of the water. Of course we need the editor first...
afro-herbalist Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 they're not as dumb as the unfinished state of their every release makes them look' date=' or at least some of the devs actually plays the games they make[/quote'] LOL, speaking of which, have you ever played Daikatana? From such a legendary developer, and designer, I've NEVER played a game as unfinished upon release as that. Absolute WASTE of £40 or £50-60 as it would've been on the N64, because Nintendo used to love robbing the sh*t out of us all, even more than Sony and Microsoft with PS3/360. And this is when I don't even own Skyrim yet. Exactly, time difference. To be honest, when I first played Oblivion I thought it looked F*CKING amazing. I had to pick my jaw up off the floor, even on medium settings, then I upgraded my PC and the same thing happened again. In terms of difference between instalments. I can honestly say, the difference between Oblivion and Skyrim, is FAR smaller than the difference between Morrowind and Oblivion, infact, its probably incremental in all ES games. There was only a few MORE years between ES 3 & 4 too AFAIK. I dont know what engine morrowind used, but Oblivion and Skyrim clearly seem to use the same engine. Skyrim probably just uses a far more advanced version, like Bioshock did with the Unreal Engine, and all other "non epic-games" UE games dating back to 1999, like Postal 2. I think we're being a bit too harsh on Oblivion man, unless I'm the only one who thought it was one of the best games ever made! Sure it had its bugs, but (no offence) it almost seems like the general concensus is: "Right, new games out, screw the old game, I always hated it, even though I played it. Im modern", but I KNOW that can't be the case lol, it CANT be...can it!? I'm not trying to criticise anybody, seriously, but it just seems like everyones so eager to hate the older game now the newer games out. Stop being racist! Admit it, we've all been blown away by Oblivion atleast 4 times! Also, I dont know what people are talking about "pretty snow". It looks bloody terrible, look (maxed out gfx???):
Honesty Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 Yeah.. still not understanding how people can say the "stand there and just swing and have the same animation play over and over and over again" is better "gameplay" than Skyrims ... really ... like .. are you ****ing kidding me? I mean, to each their own but come on man ... REALLY? That's like saying a CRT from 1995 looks better than a 2011 3D 1080p Plasma HDTV with pitch-perfect black levels. Or somehow the number 1 is greater than a 1000. (I had to crop this and resize it .. my screen resolution is actually 2560x1600)
Ryanhabs Posted November 22, 2011 Posted November 22, 2011 I have always liked Oblivion and Morrowind before that, I personally think its more the case of everyone playing Oblivion for 3 -4 years waiting for the new installment and now that its here it's the best thing since sliced bread, and the next one will be too. I have my saved games and mods from morrowind and oblivion yet and intend on keeping them incase I ever load them up again, but until Skyrim modding starts to wear thin I doubt that will happen.
Guest Donkey Posted November 23, 2011 Posted November 23, 2011 I don't want to play Oblivion ever again Seem we have to wait a bit before saying this again.. If they keep this up the opposite is true again.. Look at fiasco of steam yesterday in frustration many uninstalled skyrim already.
dysfunkshunal Posted November 23, 2011 Posted November 23, 2011 I deleted Oblivion after buying Skyrim... I am not overly concerned with the sex mods, but know that they will come en masse as soon as the CK is released. This time around, you have a legion of experienced modders who's skill has only improved wanting to open up the hood and make some serious changes. For me, the knowledge of the upcoming mods keeps me sated, though I really wish those types of things were available on a first playthrough.
Honesty Posted November 23, 2011 Posted November 23, 2011 It's just this game is so much more DYNAMIC and CINEMATIC than Oblivion was. I mean 110% MORE Dynamic/Cinematic ... because Oblivion wasn't really ... AT ALL. Stone structures rise from the water. Events happen where you have to battle your way out in the nick of time before perishing. NPC's don't all have the same 3 voice actors and talk about mud crabs for three conversations in a row. The crashing and rushing waves from the waterfalls. Dead bodies floating down stream with three arrows in the back of their skull. And the NPC's aren't static as hell. We got sexy ladies sitting on top of a book shelf, with her one leg dangling; asking you to do something pretty naughty, or else ... tl;dr this game is Neewwwwwwwwwwww. Nice things will come. Yes, they will.
Sand_Dragon Posted November 23, 2011 Posted November 23, 2011 I'm pretty sure in a few weeks you'll all decide Skyrim's gameplay sucks pretty bad too. That's a big claim to stake.
calranthe Posted November 23, 2011 Posted November 23, 2011 I don't like Skyrim's gameplay. I just don't. I'm pretty sure in a few weeks you'll all decide Skyrim's gameplay sucks pretty bad too. tekryder Posted November 26, 2011 Posted November 26, 2011 I kinda want to download and install oblivion again.. i liked the green hills and adult mods.. but that will be a few days to get it to where i want it. and then when its heavily modded with better cities or open cities, my system takes a performance hit, since Oblivion wasn't made for multicore processers.. This is where skyrim looks awesome even on my dated system. The game might have been held back a little bit since they had to build it with console systems in mind, but it works out for me and people with older systems.
stgmilleralive Posted November 26, 2011 Posted November 26, 2011 The more I play Skyrim the more I realize I hated Oblivion until Shivering Isles was released. I had many good reasons why I tended to get bored in the earlier Elder Scrolls. Reasons the Mad God did much to fix. The gameplay, the environment, and the loot, everything is just more addictive and better-tuned than Oblivion. Sure there are enough bugs to scare Billy, and the PC controls are bad enough to give me cancer, but by God I haven't been able to find a decent, strong reason to hate this game. I mean if you want to be vindictive, you could turn your ire to the fact we haven't received the modding kit, something I believe Bethesda will deliver after the first, big patch.
jinsanx Posted November 26, 2011 Posted November 26, 2011 I don't like Skyrim's gameplay. I just don't. I'm pretty sure in a few weeks you'll all decide Skyrim's gameplay sucks pretty bad too. I am very confident that Skyrim's adult mods will blow Oblivion's out of the water. Of course we need the editor first... I started modding the other Bethesda products pretty quickly after messing with vanilla. I'm enjoying vanilla quite a bit right now with Skyrim and I'm actually content to wait on adding mods for some time. Hate to break it to you, but that means I enjoy this game a hell of a lot more than the other products(Which I'm not bashing btw, but as a comparison). It's made well in some many ways, there's so many things I actually don't want to mod or change when the opportunity appears. But you are on the money for the adult mods, I really think there is great opportunities for those situationally and technically. Also, adult modders have the experience and resources of several bethesda products at their disposal now. 6 months down the road, and we're gonna have some impressive adult mods imo. We've got a community primed and ready to make some badass stuff, it's gonna be pretty awesome me thinks.
