Question about MO2

Recommended Posts

Posted

I'm looking into changing my Mod Manager from NMM to MO2, but I do have a question...if a Mod is for LE but I successfully use it for SE/AE, despite the fact it flags as Form43, would I still be able to install that Mod using MO2?

Posted (edited)

That depend of the mesh and textures used in the mod because the format has been changed in SE and, normally, must be converted using Cathedral Assets.

But not depend of the format of the ESP. The number 43 or 44 normally mean nothing.

Aditionally, if you come from NMM i recomend change to Vortex. For one side, have direct import of your actual NMM configuration.

For other side is much more easy than MO.

Here's a link to the MO2 Discord.   The MO2 folks I've worked with are super-nice and handle these kinds of migration questions all the time.

Yes. Also you can remove that check entirely. MO2 Settings>Plugins>find and disable the form 43 check. Or simply uncheck it from the installer if you're installing it for the first time or updating MO.

You can also remove the chess piece flag which gets added to mods downloaded from nexusmods for LE and installed in SE. Simply right click the mod (left side of MO2) and select the mark as converted option. That flag is useful to remind the user the mod might need some tweaks to work, but once you do so and confirm the mod is working you can safely remove it.

I tried Vortex for a while, I really didn't like it, I have more control over the Mods I use with NMM than I did with Vortex. I like that MO2 doesn't install the Mods directly inot the Game, that's what caught my attention, or I would just use NMM.

The LE Mods I use, i have been using for quite sometime without problems with NMM, so was just hoping MO2 would allow it also, from what i am understanding, it won't be a problem :)

I'm using MO since 2016 and never looked for another organizer... so, just stick to one that suit you and your needs.

I'm using Vortex for more than 4 or 5 years to manage Beth games like Legendary, Special and Fallout4 but also use it to manage Sims 4, Surviving Mars and others games that are not suported by MO. Of course, we have a lot of managers and we can use a diferent manager for each game, as a lot of people made, but i think is better have one single manager that can manage a lot of games.

I have always used NMM, I bought a PC copy of Skyrim 6 months after it initial release, I was on XBox before that and moved to PC specifically to Mod Skyrim lol...I think NMM was the only available option way back then (aside from Wyrebash)...but I do like the fact that MO2 doesn't actually touch the Game files themselves, more of an overlay if I understand correctly, thus why my curiousity in trying it out :)

Vortex not touch any single file of the game. Can seems to make it because anybody can see the files inside the DATA folder but really the files are not here. Are simple virtual copies generated by the operating system. Vortex works with SymLinks and is the same system that use the Windows Operating System for your Documents folder. You can see a My Documents folder and use it and you think that your files are inside that folder but that is not true... Realy the files are inside C:\Users\[User_Name]\My documents.

Your see a link in the same way you see a lot of links when you look inside the DATA folder of an Skyrim managed with Vortex. Same for C:\Windows\system32:

Each file with a red arrow in the icon is a SymLink and act as a real file but really is a virtual copy.

Oh okay, so NMM is the only manager that actually changes game files then? I tired Vortex once, but ended up spitting the dummy at it because I couldn't find how to manually sort my Mods, LOOT does the initial sorting for me, but there are a few Mods on which I disagree with LOOT on where they need to be, that's what I didn't like about Vortex :(

You can mark mods in LOOT to not be moved from the position you like them to be. Just do some reading about loot functions.

NMM stop making that in version 50 or 52, i not remember exactly. In versions before 50 NMM fisically copy the files making a real copy of  the file. In next versions NMM start ussing the same SymLink system used by Vortex, that of course, is not a invention of NMM or Vortex, is a metod used by any operating system from 1990. Windows 95 was made with SymLinks.

The recomendation of use Vortes is because Vortex is 1000 times faster than NMM. A change profile with Vortex need seconds, maybe 20 or 30, while a change profile with NMM can take 2 or 3 minutes.

LOOT have some meta-rules created by the comunity but also have personal rules:

Spoiler
Load After

This is a list of plugins which, if present, the current plugin must load after, but which are not required. This metadata can be used for resolving specific compatibility issues. Each entry has two fields:

Vortex have LOOT integration and support personal rules, in the same way LOOT made, to sort the plugins as necesary.

In vortex we can create a specific rule to put a pluging under another specific pluging:

Vortex allow lock a specific pluging to a specific slot but that is NOT recomended because the slot number can change when we add or remove others plugings.

More clear. You have a plugin called Follower that must be loaded AFTER another pluging that is now in position 133.

You lock the plugin follower to the position 134. Launch the game to test it and everything is working correctly.

But now you add another mod with a MASTER=ESM that must be loaded BEFORE any other normal pluging... What hapend???

Yes, the position 134 is used by the plugin Follower, because you lock it in that position, but the OTHER pluging is not in 133.

Is in position 135 because ALL pluging advance one position, caused by the MASTER, and the position 134 is locked, so must go to 135.

Then, you have the the plugin Follower locked in a bad position and not works correctly.

As you lock the the plugin Follower to a fixed position in a manual way you must make another manual operation to solve the problem.

Until another change in the pluging list break again the manual order.

NEVER use the option to lock a plugin to a specific slot. That only go to cause problems. Use always RULES because the rules never fail and never can break.

If you can use it in Skyrim SE or AE with any other mod manager then you should be able to use it with MO2 as well.

Thank you for such an informative answer alex77r4, I really appreciate it :) ...Going by what you say, I think I may just stay with NMM, I have always been happy with it and very comfortable in operating it, I had only been considering a change over due to my mistaken belief that MO2 was the only Manager that didn't directly insert Mod Files into the Game Folder, now that you have educated me, thank you again, I am very happy about the news regarding NMM and considering I don't change Profiles I really don't see any need now to give up my preferred Manager :)
