2013 The Year Of Bad Games?

It's only a matter of time before the console and PC merges. It might not happen this coming gen, but it'll happen...

Microsoft was trying to make Xbox One more of a pc than a gaming console. They were trying to adopt the Steam model, so yes, it most certainly is happening.

Posted

Well, when I say they're merging, I mean they're returning to the days of the Atari, which was a computer and a console. And if we wanna go there, the Famicom (Family Computer) was both, as it had a keyboard, a cart with BASIC and a modem.

Problem is, that m$ want to change PC in to console. Windows 8 anyone?

The best company is Nintendo with their "hey I take an old N64 game, refurbish it a bit and sell it again full priced"

If I ever want a Wii then only to have a easy to pack away fitness centre.

From Software was also funny with their 1024x768 Pixel version of Dark Souls with their lame excuse "sorry we don't have experience with porting to PC" when some random dude can make a fix for that in just some days/weeks lol

I never buy games at release anymore so I can see of they are bugged and then fixed by the community haha

Interesting new age phenomenon to outsource patching and bug fixing to the customers

consoles are still easy to use iv updated had no problems maybe a small minority do? becase iv heard of no problems

mandatory installs are nothing just let it do its magic and then back to gaming!!!

japan has some good competive games in the arcade shame they are dead in the UK&US

Objection! ngbbs5096a1a40a723.gif

You just said that consoles are as simple as putting the disc and play. If you have to do an install then -slams desk- tumblr_lvedw0GXC11qhwnxs.gif THEN THERE REALLY IS NO MUCH DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PC AND CONSOLE!

you dont need to install the whole disc there is a couple games on 360 that need extra data to be installed because of limited disc space

when i brought skyrim on pc i had to make a steam account then wait for it to do install steam, then updates, then the game, until i finally got to play

iv re-installed steam you have to go through some process, put a code in steam to let them know its you etc

i need to update my pc, better back up my game files on consoles you dont need to do all this

there is a difference its much simpler process on consoles

i dont find doing this stuff on pc that hard anyway but i could imagine some people will

obviously the pc is superior when it comes to power and modding, but consoles are way better for gaming

as a console gamer i dont have a problem with the mouse and keyboard, heard that saying "a bad tools man blames his tools"(something like that)

consoles have more variety in games like.....wait i will say a game from last gen to show you how many games you miss out on playing, veiwtiful joe(gamecube+ps2) it didnt have the best graphics in the world like most console games, but it had great gameplay and story

most japanese games dont come out for pc

also the console as a whole has been able to introduce to the world better titles than the pc

consoles are so simple and easy to use just put a disc in and you're off, want to take it to a friends house no problem(for the most part but better than pc) and you can invite friends over sit down in front of the big screen and relax

PC too has a great plethora of games that you will most probably never see on console, or at least won't see it at the same level of quality. First one that comes to mind is Civ 5. A quick check through steam and you'll see a lot of great titles that are not so mainstream.

I been a 360 gamer since 2006 and I can testify to anyone that you din't miss much if you din't buy the console. Except for a few gems like Lost Odyssey, Microsoft's main exclusive line up was very lacking. So what does this prove? That this variety you speak of only matters if you like the games it has to offer.

Right now in my Steam library I have an amazing variety from games like Skyrim, to games like Left 4 dead, to games like Dear Esther. And playing a game in my pc is a simple as clicking on the name. Don't like the mouse and keyboard? Plug in a controller. I play most of the time in my hd tv with a controller.

I will admit one thing however. The only next gen console I plan on buying is a Wii U, and that's because the WiiU actually offers a plethora of games you can't find anywhere else. I have yet to find a game that utilizes the Zelda formula successfully in a console that isn't Nintendo.

360 hardly has any exclusives anyway, if you look at ps3&wii/u you're missing out on a lot

in my comment i even gave an example of a gamcube/ps2 game, thats how many games you've missed out on over the years  :P

the pc market has much better rts games and elder scroll games are so much better to buy on pc

fps are likely better on pc? mouse and keyboard? i dont think the console is missing out that much here

console exclusives over shadow almost every game on pc like zelda, metroid, fighting games(tekken, street fighter), bayonetta, heavy rain, metal gear solid/rising, final fantasy(i think a few of them are on pc as well), vanquish, the last of us, gears of war(2,3), infamous..more

these are just a few on current gen i could think of

I had a gamecube.  I miss the little guy from time to time. And correct me if I am wrong, but X1 will require mandatory installs.

And again, some of the games you mentioned I can live without happily. For example I tried to like Infamous, but I got massively bored with it, I'm also not into fighting games. That said, I'll admit Nintendo exclusives are awesome.

Shame that console gamers lack of any economy games, or even space simulators or anything that required more than pressing few buttons ;)

Actually I am not so sure about that, first it might happen that PCs will be used only for professional purposes but I dont think having gaming consoles entering any professional workspace anytime soon.

As long as there will be people to buy expensive gaming toys like the GeForce TITAN or the Radeon 7990 the gaming PC market wont go down (it is also true for 'smaller' cards in a certain mesure, you dont need these cards to play any game in good conditions unless you are using very specific settings like multiple screens, 3D gaming etc.. and even then a SLI of Crossfire of smaller cards would do the job), actually you see more and more gaming devices coming for PCs every year like gaming keyboards and gaming mouses that are usefull only for a gaming configuration and again, as long as potential buyers will ask for such things consoles and PCs have no interest in merging.

The PS3, from what I understand was the king of mandatory installs, which made things like the 16GB slim model a total joke. And from what I understand, games like Metal Gear Solid 4 required you to install every mission/chapter/whatever.

METAL GEAR GUYVER

Funny story, you know the guy who voiced Snake also was in Guyver: Dark Hero, where he ran around in a robot suit and fought monsters? 'Cause that's awesome.

ZOANOIDS

So yeah, mandatory installs, updating the OS, possible hard drive failures... it's all starting to sound PC, except you don't have the option to upgrade your machine so you're stuck with whatever parts that become sub par over time and you can't mod without becoming CRIMINAL SCUM and getting your machine banned from being yelled at by 9 year olds calling you names.

Yes MGS4 required you to install every single chapter, which would take around 10 minutes per chapter.

9 year olds calling you names.

And to think, people actually pay money for that privilege.

While not particularly from 9 year old's, some in fact do pay for the priviledge of being insulted.  Dick's Last Resort in Dallas is a restaurant that specializes in it (see number 9 on the list): http://listverse.com/2009/07/24/top-10-bizarre-restaurants/

Yes, I have eaten there and it is damn good food and excellent service......despite being called a four eyed mother fucker.  That is what the greeter at the door called me and the server continued with the nickname...... :s

They really are pretty ingenious with their insults, as I have rarely heard the same ones even though I have been there almost a half dozen times.  I'd advise those who are overweight and wearing spandex, to go some where else for dinner...... :P

oh yeah you're right about ps3 needing some installs

You guys are looking in the wrong places, AAA is not where all the gems are...or maybe I'm just getting old. 2013 is shaping up to be a pretty good year for me.

Leisure Suit Larry Reloaded, released and is pretty awesome, which I donated via kick starter https://www.replaygamesinc.com/index/get-game?gameId=13

Wasteland 2, should be shipping Q3 or Q4, which I also kickstarted http://wasteland.inxile-entertainment.com/

I also kickstarted torment but that's gonna be 2014, once they are finsihed with Wasteland http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/inxile/torment-tides-of-numenera

Dead State is also coming along, and I thnk will ship before in Q4, though maybe 2014, and I will buy it though I couldn't spare the Kickstarter funds http://www.deadstate.doublebearproductions.com/faq/

Age of decadence still chugging along, hopefully they will release this year. Played one of the betas hard but still more good old school stuff http://www.irontowerstudio.com/

Lots of stuff to look forward too, if you aren't just looking for the most shiny trinket;)

WHAT?!?!?! Tell me you aren't dissing BL2!!!!  Them's fighting words!!!!

I seriously love that freaking game.

On Topic:  When Rome 2 Total War comes out in September that pretty much will be GOTY as far as I am concerned.

Don't forget about Saints Row 4 either!  That will most likely be kick ass as well.

I dislike B2.

Try watching this. You'll feel a little lousy. The main writer himself HATES B2 writing but he sold out to make it. The video is pretty good, it's pretty sad how gaming is becoming commodofied.

If I was to point out any one game that I'm disappointed with this year, it'd have to be SC2:HotS. My opinion is based on the content that was on release, so things may have changed since then.

I should point out that, if anyone wants to argue, he should read the entire thing or not bother at all. I don't want any needless flame.

This is, of course, a wall-of-text post.

I'll note here that the game's amazing lack of optimization has left me with laggs (on lowest quality, whereas I can play Skyrim with 8K textures, enb, aa and what not), extremely long loading screens, crashes, and just an over-all bad experience.

The writting: in my honest opinion, worse than WoL. Too much about moral struggles, too little about the actual "swarm" as we have known it. Yes, I realise that it was supposed to change, but the campaign felt like a comedy of failures that aspired to be a love story with some kind of plot twist that just wasn't there.

Also, if that ending was supposed to be a cliff-hanger, it failed. I'm not looking forward for the next SC2 expansion at all.

Campaign length: stupidly short. I ended up staring at loading screens longer than playing in some levels, which is a horrible thing to have in any game.

If I took out the loading screen times, the game doesn't even have six hours. On "brutal".

Army "customization" and Kerrigan skill "tree" options: There are, perhaps, a couple of different ones that work. But why even bother?

If you want a no-brain experience that can crack "brutal" like it was "fluffy kittens", pick extended range, chain reaction, rage, heal, respawning zerglings and raptor zerglings. Everything else is irrelevent. Everything else is obsolete. This "build", which could be seen further than a mile away, mocks every single level in the campaign on "Brutal", so what more could you want?.

Music: I've heard much better. The Warcraft3 music, for example, was infinitely better than SC2:HotS's music in my opinion.

I realize this is a matter of personal taste, though.

Character responses: This is a major problem. If the zerg units can't actually talk and have no actual responses apart from "Grrr", the least they could've done was give Kerrigan some interesting\fun responses. And many of them, since she will be the character you have selected roughly 70% of the campaign (would have been more, but there are a few levels in which you cannot use her).

Comparing to WoL, where even minor characters that you only got for one side-mission had a full voice set (the second-to-last mission), her lines are extremely poor.

As it is, "I am the swarm" just doesn't cut it for me.

Conclusion: If this was a game that never had SC2:HotS's budget, I may have given it as high as a 6/10.

As it is... The game gets a 4/10 from me.

No, I'm not looking at the multiplayer aspect. I have firm belief that, when a game is released, it should be good on it's own. No extra DLCs, no mods.

If it doesn't clock at the low, low minimum of 6 hours, it would have to be one hell of a gem for me to pay even 30$ for it, when I can by a bunch of indie games for the same price and play for at least ten times that.

Thank you for your time.

No, I don't.  I enjoyed the shit out of BL1 and enjoyed BL2 even more.  Zero regrets.  Fuck...just talking about them makes me want to do another play through of both games.

As to the jag off that made the "review" video, he is little more than an idiot.  He had zero to say and took 15 minutes to do it.  Seriously....what a nut job.  Who the fuck plays a first person shooter for the "writing?"  And his disappointment at the juvenile dialogue....?  Fuck that!  The dialogue was what I loved most about the game.  Tiny Tina had me laughing hard enough to blow snot bubbles.  Games are not art, they are a distraction to the grind of life.  If something makes you laugh (and BL2 made me laugh my ass off a ton) then it served its purpose.

If the dude had even the slightest clue he would have already realized that BL2 was just more of what BL was.  The dude needs to go review Sundance festival films and leave game reviews to folks like Angry Joe.
