Emily Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 Does Forum Admin have a perk or privileges that allows them to read Private messages?
Thulas Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 I hope not, this would hurt our personal rights massively. But if yes, we should prepare a riot for when Ashal is back.
Sun Shang Xiang Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 I think that in case that the admins have valid reasons for doing so, e.g. if they suspect that he/she is doing something shady, or if they have been warned by other members, I would outright give that privilege to them. Otherwise I agree with Thulas.
Ark of Truth Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 As far as I am aware the admin and moderators can only read a private message if one or more parties use the "Report" button on one of the posts within that message.
Ashal Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 Moderators can't. And no I don't. Though as Ark says pressing report on a private message does reveal the private message to moderators. You have to press the button though, moderators can't just pick somebody out and browse their inbox. I could read them all if I felt so inclined (which I don't) I run the server so I obviously have access to the database the private messages are stored in and could look through it. This holds true of any admin on ANY forum or website you use. It's not something built into the forum in anyway; just a byproduct of how websites work. A private message has to be stored somewhere, and I as the admin have to provide a place for it to be stored. But why would I? I have nothing to gain from it, and your personal conversations are of no interest to me.
windpl Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 And I believe that they are encrypted, obviously you have the key but it would be bother to run messages through it
windpl Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 Nope, plain text last I checked. Yes, if it is marked. But if Ashal had urge to view someone message box probably he would need to access msql db where all messages are encrypted.
Ark of Truth Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 Nope, I think they are all still plain text even then when you can access them.
gregathit Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 Hell, even if I had access, I wouldn't bother. I can barely keep up with my own freaking inbox for craps sake.
RitualClarity Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 I don't understand the concern. Don't post things you shouldn't be posting on this site and it shouldn't matter. Even if Ashal never looks it doesn't mean that those records aren't there. If they are there they can be accessed. There can be court summons, or hacks into the web site. If you don't want particular info on this site to be read in the message, don't summit it. If it is important enough for more controlled privacy give other info for the participant to use and set up a more acceptable form of communications outside of this Forum. Even that wont make it 100 % safe but at least you would have more control over the conversations.
Adam Jensen Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 Loverslab forums are by itself very open minded. So the only way I can see admins trying to read your messages is if either you are contacting a hitman or a drug dealer through message. I really doubt they care about whatever naughty things you are pming other users, unless it's harassing the other party.

Send me your social security number and mother's maiden name, with that I'll get in contact with Facebook and have them remove your credit card info.
kingkong Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 why do you care of privacy when you have facebook or a email account or iphone anybody with a little skill can acces and get information (hack tools everywhere in internet) if you realy care of privacy you should start and learn telepathy.
gregathit Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 if you realy care of privacy you should start and learn telepathy.  Except what happens when they figure out how to listen to the voices you hear in your head? Course, if they do figure out how to do this and bother to tune in to my brain, they'll either drop dead out of sheer fright or run away screaming like a little girl......
RitualClarity Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 If they tuned to my brain they would hear nothing but silence ....

What if they invent something that can cram the knowledge of hundreds of years into your brain under five minutes? Teachers will all be out of job.

The NSA is probably already working on that...
