Please help with weird issues, possibly hardware? Skyrim starts stuttering with clicking noise = freeze

So i am lost here and knowing the forum as very helpful i just try to ask.

i can play my modded skyrim for around 10-30 min before i get stuttering wich leads to hard freeze ctd every time!

the weird thing is i started to realise the hardware (zotac en970) starts to make a clicking noise when the stutter starts to appear.
the gpu is a gtx 970m 3gb vram. I optimized textures with cathedral to 1k wich makes the game run better but this still happens every time i play.

i re applied cooling paste to cpu and gpu. Fancintrol nd task manager dont show anything special (well lst time enbhost had 1,5gb ram use and skyrim also 1,5gb from 8gb available).

the samsung ssd gives no errors and dont have clicking parts.

theres sth weird with the gpu driver. To get the full control panel i have to disable and enable the nvidia driver in device manager each startup of the computer. This also happens with fresh driver install.

Play in windowed, smaller resolution and keep an eye on your Processes CPU time to see what is happening there. If it goes to 100%, etc.

Try playing a new save with no mods, or just alternative start and UI etc, just basic set up, and see if it still happens.

Did it just start happening?

I've noticed that the C+ stuff sometimes effects Skyrim so it might be worth updating all that stuff.

The actual issue sounds like that multi threading issue you get in certain games where you have one process taking up the CPU time... But that is not an issue in Skyrim as far as I've ever heard.

Just try my first two suggestions to start with.

I play in 1024x768 windowed borderless.  I am fine with the resolution size on my small display

it is the 20-ish new game these weeks to poke around and see if i stay stable. Usualy i start stable and it gets worse.

skyrim w/o mods isnt worth my time:)

only ssd drives, clicking comes from pc, to me it sounds like from the mxr gpu or fan but seems to work fine.

just updated driver. Issues persists.

the weird thing is, the pc sound/noise change happens always consistent with the stutter. Like 100%.

stutter goes aways, the pc sound changes back to normal, comes back, sound changes. The hard clicking is rather the case when the game completely freezes up

Its a nightmare. I disabled 2 big texture mods „complete“ and skyrim 2019 by pfusher +  made a clean start... right again first time outside crashing or rather freezing after seconds.

i correct: the rattling sound is when game runs and always stops during stutter and completely stops when frozen.

Have you tried opening up your case and checking the moving parts while you are starting / playing the game?  You've got some kind of hardware problem, probably with a fan if you don't have mechanical drives.  If your components stop getting the proper cooling you'll likely have larger problems in the future than getting a game to not crash.  Check your CPU and GPU temperatures at idle and under load as well, especially when the noise starts.

Edit:  To clarify what I'm saying, when a computer CPU / GPU goes under a heavy load and heats up, it will cause the fans in your system to start operating at a higher RPM.  If you are hearing a noise like that, and the noise stops when the game freezes, it is highly likely that the CPU or GPU fan has stopped moving and therefore the system is becoming unstable due to the heat and locking up.

Maybe some files are corrupted. I have something similiar long time ago, and it was hdd and corrupted files fault.

How can a corrupt file cause a sound? The OP has said several times that he has SSDs and not HDDs.

plausible, but actutally my case is open to always help airflow since its a mini pc (zotac en970).

the fans move normal and fast but yes i sometimes saw gpu fan slowdown when i first checked for this sound. As if the gpu stops working, wich would mean the mainboard integrated takes over and would explain heavy stutter->freeze. I dunno.... file corruption also sounds plausible but if the ssd cant do noise....

when i go into task manager or fancontrol during game or crash, i dont see anything unusual, fancontrol isnt precises on cpu heat but shows like 45 degree celsius for gpu. Aux ( i think the fans) are on 100% i think thats normal. Task manager cpu load is usualy between 30-60% and Ram around 60-70% with skyrim showing 1,5-3,5gb.

the stutter is fps independent it seems. In my game 30-35 fps is good, i can play fine with that.

whats pretty sacry is that repeative clicking i got recently during a freeze.

the stutter likes to happen and start when moving, looking around and the sound is so bound to it (like stopping for intervals) that i look around, stutter, sound silent, stutter off, sound normal etc etc. EVERYTIME! It happens the game will 100% freeze after a few sec. Console or menu brings it in idle/normal sound but i managed to crash there too.

Did you say you removed CPU and GPU to add cooling paste?

Are you using Firestorm software?

Maybe this is of interest (maybe you read it already from my previous post).

It would fit what you say about the fans slow down.

Spoiler

Luckily it seems I can avoid sending it back for repairs or even replacement. After reaching out to Zotac customer support I've narrowed managed to narrow it down to the Firestorm software. The temperature was constantly jumping between idle and not idle so the fans would start and stop according to that. It seems Firestorm took priority over MSI Afterburner when I re-seated my card and turned my PC on after the CPU installation.

There might be also issues with your Skyrim setup. If your Computer is that weak you might want to look into ways to reduce the load on your hardware.

Just had to remove the cooling pipe with fans.  Not using that software or another. Installed fancontrol recently to track down the issue so its not that

This freaking game is just cursed!

i again was able from a new start to play several levels / hours without many crashes and almist no freeze ups. Probably once every 1-2 hours, acceptable for modded skyrim.

i then startet to make use again of the proteus project character preset saving, making 3 presets on my pc, storing them into proteus for later use on npcs and reloaded from before that action.

right away upon leaving the cell (drunken huntsman) into WR, stutter of death.....i have reason to belive for some reason that mod kills my game. I didnt even use the presets yet but allready messed up save again. From that moment on it continues to happen.

so i thought i was clever and loaded an older save, removes project proteus, resaved with fallrim (21 instances) but the game stays unstable from exactly that moment on i saved presets into proteus system. Now i am crashing upon entering riverwood after the2 wolves (a classic it seems) i have gonethrough there in the game run yesterday without problems. This mod kills my game :(  I start to hate skyrim with every new start, having a stable game, doing again the same things a 20th time just to again hit the bomb of everything screwed up.... its depressing.

as an extra i have now dark face mismatches on many Npcs and potatoe heads on rschildren..... not the slightest idea what screwed that up

i remember why i gave up on this game a year ago

You get the idea of Skyrim modding all wrong ?

The goal should be a stable game and not find the most reliable ways to make it unplayable.

You dropped and removed a mod like Proteus Project into an already unstable game and thought removing it mid game would make it better? ?

You are their creator, now you have to love them the way you made them ?

I recommend to create a stable game first, means a mod combination of reliable mods and frameworks that work together.

If you archived that you can start doing experiments.

Remember you are the one that decides what to combine in your game, which also make you responsible for the failures of your own creation.

Yes but as i said, it ran again ultra stable until that moment. Like before, just before i didnt realise it might be this mod.

so the npc disco, oration and head conflicts are obviously from my overhauls.

there are:

bijin

jh skyrim

botox

Rs children

and all those needed hairs, npchairoverhaul, appachi, ks renewed and hdt.

i mistaken smp for hmp wich is a skin mod for male npcs. Smp is disabled.

i seriously think about switching to SE and start over but i think many of the weirdo loverslab mods wont be working there.

i use wartimes as alternate start mod so as things are, i cant even have mother without a face discoloration.
