Seeking Experienced Modder Assistance: Newb Successfully Installed Game Per Guide... Then Fucked It Up

Recommended Posts

I had a perfectly working game courtesy of this wonderful tutorial. However, I wanted more mods and fucked it all up. The game won't start at all, so I do not have a Papyrus log to provide despite having installed Papyrus. MO is not providing error messages anymore (I had a few "incompatible mods" that I removed). I am at a loss at what the problem could be.

I have attached a screenshotted plugin list from MO, my copy-pasted LOOT load order, and my copy-pasted LOOT "content."

Would someone be able to assist? Please let me know if more information is required.

Thank you!

Oh, hi. That's a lot of mods, but you surely did your reading and digging for all these patches (even then be careful about the loadorder of these, sometimes patches require a particular loadorder different than the one LOOT does, always check the description/install instruction). Strange you say MO doesn't provide error messages, looking at your plugins.rtf I can see a warning at

Quote

216   RDO - USSEP Patch.esp

This is likely a warning about a missing master (that patch requires a plugin file that is not installed or activated in your current loadorder, if you move your mouse over RDO - USSEP Patch.esp in your loadorder you should see a floating message with info about the master files present and missing). Check that and make sure there are no other warnings in your loadorder or in the top-right corner of MO.

Edit: the info you provided is okay, but a more easy way to share your loadorder (right MO panel) and modlist (left MO panel) is going to "\Mod Organizer 2\profiles\default" and copy&paste the info in "loadorder.txt"and "modlist.txt".

Edit2: a little nitpick as I see you're new to this, a papyrus log isn't that useful in troubleshooting crashes really. Papyrus logs are just a registry of a part of the game (the scripts) and doesn't always reflect the state of your game at the time of crashing. You'll likely find information about mods not behaving properly, but in most cases the source of your crashes won't be there.

Hi, dontknowdontcaredontask! Thanks for catching that last patch. I have disabled it.

As for the error messages. I was referring to the notifications alerts near the top right section of the MO window. When I was first installing mods, it would let me know when I was missing a master or if something was not able to be read by SKSE. I am not receiving an issue from it at this point.

I just restarted my computer, and I was able to begin loading the game just long enough ENB to begin to load before everything shut down... but now at least Steam is registering that I want to start the game! I have included a screenshot taken with my phone of what pops up on my screen.

( Yes, my screen is dirty but my eyes are so bad that I can only see it in my phone pictures. ? )

Edit:

Whoops, I forgot to add the text requested. I have attached it as well.

I forgot to rename a few of the mods in my load order.... Please let me know if that causes any confusion!

Ok, so I'd count this as moving one step closer to the solution. Try this

  1. Open SSE Edit (using the executable you added to MO) and make sure you have enabled all your mods in the list SSE Edit will present you.
  2. Wait for a while, SSE Edit will load all your plugins (similar to what happens when you open the game and reach the main menu).
  3. Check for any warning or errors. SSE Edit will warn you if something is wrong at any step in the loading process. If there is an error, you should be able to identify the plugin causing the issue, go to that mod page and check for any instruction about loadorder or required mods.
    1. You'll have to check your installed mods in case you're missing something.
    2. You might need to manually move some plugins in your loadorder.

If SSE Edit doesn't have any issues loading your mods, remove the files from ENB (binaries + your preset files) and try to start the game. I don't think this is your case, but some presets require ReShade and that has a dll that causes issues in Windows10.

If nothing works you'll have to do disable part of your mods and test if you can reach the main menu and start a new game. The way I recommend is as follows:

  • Start by disabling all your mods except the SKSE Scripts and the SKSE INI pre-download.
  • Try to start the game and start a new game, just to test if everything is ok (you can close the game when you see the opening sequence). Go back to MO and:

  1. Enable the top half of your mods, check if MO gives you any warning (warnings at this point would tell you about a missing master, a mod that's required for one of the enabled mods is missing, you'll need to a) disable the mod with missing master or b) enable the mod stated as missing master).
    1. Once you're sure you've enabled nearly half the installed mods and you don't see any warnings about missing masters, try to start the game.
      1. If you CTD, the culprit is among the mods you've just enabled, go back to MO and disable half of the enabled mods (again, leaving the mods near the top enabled). Check for warnings about missing masters and once you don't see any warning, try to launch the game.
      2. If you don't CTD, exit the game and enable half of the disabled mods. Check for warnings, try to launch the game.
    2. Either by enabling or disabling mods this way, you'll be able to tell which mod in particular is causing troubles (it would be either the last mod you enabled and causes CTD or the last mod you disabled and causes the game to stop crashing). When you find that mod, remove it an reinstall it. Pay attention to the install process.

It's a boring process but it should lead you to the culprit in most cases. Once you've identify the mod (or mods) causing the crash you'll have to check if you can do something about it (change loadorder, install a missing patch/requirement) or just remove/replace that mod(s).

Thanks for the advice! SSEdit did not appear to show any errors - or at least none that I saw. I am at the stage of trying to run the game without the ENB now. Were you referring to disabling the ENB preset and ENB mod via MO or removing the contents of the enbseries folder in my Skyrim folder?

(I don't expect anyone to read all the items in the SSEdit file but I am including it so I can track my progress here)

Remove the ENB files from your Skyrim folder. Especially the dll ones, that's safe measure for testing. Note that you can't add or remove them via MO (remember the dll, enbseries folder and ini files go into the Skyrim SE folder, not in the Data folder, and MO only handles files that go in the Data folder).

Thank you for the assistance! I am so sorry it took me so long to respond - I lost my job just before Corona hit where I live. It's been a wild month. I am going to re-look through this thread and your tutorial and see if I can pick up where I left off.
