The game failed to load

Hi all,

I just wanted to play for a bit, when for the first time the game refused to load at all. I'm using Mod Organizer v2.1.6. I've been experiencing CTDs on a regular basis, but this has never happened before. Usually, I'm launching the game using SKSE Launcher in Mod Organizer. When I click the button RUN, I receive the following message:

Please press OK once you're logged into steam.

But the thing is, I'm already logged into steam.

The last message (log) Mod Organizer displays at the bottom reads:

close C:/Users/Vasil/AppData/Local/ModOrganizer/SkyrimSE/profiles/Default/plugins.txt

I attached the plugins.txt which shows the order of the mods, but I haven't made any changes after the last time I played (a few days ago).

Any ideas what might be the problem? Thanks.

Failed to load in the meaning of

  1. loading a saved game, or
  2. loading to the main screen

?

1. check with another save, you have probably a corrupted save file

2. use loot or similar tools to check for missing masters. MO should tell you the same, at least MO1 does. Look at your right pane, plugin view and scroll through your mods and watch out for an exclamation mark behind the name

And pretty sure, you switched mods around activated new ones, updated or deactiveted old ones?

It might help to recall what you were doing since it worked last time. The problem is highly probable somewhere inside of your activities.

No, no... The whole process shuts down before loading the main screen. After I hit the button RUN, Mod Organizer tries to start the game but fails and ends up closing plugins.txt. That's all that happens.

I did run Loot and FNIS several times to no avail.

It may also help to post in the correct forum. SE tech support has its own place.

I posted it in Skyrim Technical Support. Isn't that the right place?

SE issues are to be posted in the Skyrim SE forum under the Technical subforum. That being said, can you post your FNIS output? That is, what FNIS shows when you run it. This should begin with a description of your skeleton and end with the number of animations that you successfully loaded.

I'm not using SE (Special Edition) if that's what you mean. I bought The Elder Scrolls V 5: Skyrim Legendary Edition (PC).
Do you mean to take screenshots of my FNIS output? Here you are: FNIS 1, FNIS 2

Okay, LE (legendary edition) is the old version (Oldrim) which means that you've posted in the correct place. For future reference you could have done a "copy and paste" which would have been easier for you.

So, you have the correct skeleton and don't have too many animations.

So, going back to Worik's question, does this happen only with a save or does it happen with a new game as well. If it happens in a new game the next piece of information I need is your load order from LOOT (preferably in a spoiler). The reason I want it from LOOT is that, if you run LOOT it will tell you is you are missing a master which is another possible cause of your problem.

Your 1st post had this strange message

That might be misleading us ... Still I wonder whats mixed up in your setup ?

I copied it straight from Mod Organiser. Yes, I've noticed SkyrimSE in the folder tree, but I have never installed SE on my computer. Had it for PS4, but sold the console. I really don't have a clue how and why this folder was created.

I've run LOOT several times - no missing masters. I did not make any changes since the last time I played the game.

Starting to think, could it be a virus or something...

I can't even get to the main screen. It all ends in Mod Organizer. Here's a screenshot.

In that case I hope that @worik comes back because I know nothing about MO (actually ext to nothing). However, failure to get to the main screen is lack of a master 99% of the time. I don't see (on the limited amount shown in your screenshot) anything that shows that MO sees a missing master (I know that, like the NMM that I use, it highlights missing masters). What about the standard memory mods for this: crash fixes, ENBoost, etc. Do you have those loaded?

Posted

I hate to admit I couldn't remember all the memory tools but here they are from my blog:

Spoiler

First, do you have the tools?

Many tools have been developed to help stabilize and improve the modded Skyrim experience. In my opinion, among the most important are:

1) Crash fixes. Found here and fairly self-explanatory (as always, do read the directions):

https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/72725

2) ENBoost. This one is more difficult and I hope to do a walkthrough at some point in the future. It is VERY important if you have less than 4GB of VRAM. If you have 8GB or more you probably don't need it. At 4GB it's your call (I have 4GB and I use it). Anyway, you will need to look in more than one place in order to complete this (although it will take you through it). Start here:

https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/73618

As if ENBoost is not difficult enough MicroSoft has chosen to throw some additional glitches in for users of Windows 10. If you have problems getting ENBoost to work and you run Windows 10 take a look at this (I had to):

https://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/3089504-fix-for-skyrim-crashing-instantly-with-enb-on-windows-10/?p=56131491

3) SKSE. ini. The SKSE program does not come with this. As a result you do not get all the benefits of SKSE. While you can make your own version this one is already complete and optimized.

https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/51038?tab=files

4) SKSE plugin preloader. Helps organize SKSE so as to improve management.

https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/75795

5) Bethini. Skyrim's .ini files give it directions on how to handle your game. Problems with .ini files can cause all sorts of problems. While it is entirely possible to deal with these files by yourself Bethini gives you a tool with which to handle them safely. It is also much more intuitive than editing the files by yourself. It can be found here:

Yep, seen them all, installed them all, and the whole thing was working just fine (except a few CTDs from time to time).
I believe it is something else, some major crash. I'm trying to reinstall steam now and will see what happens next.

If loot is not complaining about anything we are back to square 1.

If you have time, please focus on the quote above.

Nothing stops out of a sudden.

Something got changed! Either under your control by your own doing or especially in SSE out of your control (that's why I hate :classic_angry: the CrapClub and automated updates)

That is it what you and us have to find out.

And change it back to when it was working for you!

Messed up config files could also be another cause for your problems... (your MO keeps telling us something about SE and that may have consqeuence).

But those would be veeery tricky to recover if you don't have backups

Okay, I think something happened in Windows right before I got the idea to play for a bit today and before even start Mod Organizer for the first time. The truth is I didn't pay much attention. There was a message from the Action Center (I'm running Windows 8.1 Pro, 64-bit). It was about a thread or something of the sort (I have Windows Defender off) and I just hit clean it/deal with it/whatever it offered to do - I authorized it. And it did something... After that two things happened - the game wouldn't load and my email client spat out a message about some error (I managed to run it as Administrator though).

If Windows fouls up your game you need to update your drivers particularly your video drivers.

Gotcha!

Whatever it killed, it did it efficiently

Now you have a bit of manual work before your skyrim is going to run again.

And before we do anything else:

You have a spare USB disk? Empty?

  1. Plug it in.
  2. Zip your whole steam/whatever/skyrim folder onto it
  3. zip your whole MO folder with all your mods onto it

Remember to repeat that regularly in the future.

Spoiler

I do it monthly to quarterly.. and I keep my old zips on that drive until it bursts. Then I delete the oldest ones.

I'm once and for all fed up with FUCK MicroShit Windows and AV software snakeoil messing up perfectly fine installs. May they all burn in the eternal hell!

.. be back to you with some manual rebuilding steps ... I'm just searching where I wrote them last time...

If I'm not back in an hour, RL intervened.

Thanks a lot, guys. The problem seems to be solved.

The Steam reinstallation has finished and after I hit the RUN button in MO, it popped up a message for a missing DLL file, namely d3dx9_42.dll (the one that comes with SKSE Plugin Preloader) and asked me to put it in Skyrim main folder. I did exactly that and the game loaded just fine. I played for a while just to make sure all is well. No additional problems so far.

Thanks one more time.

You're welcome. As I am fond of saying any gratitude that you think I've earned I'll take in Likes. That's the green thumbs-up button found in the bottom right hand corner of any post. It is grayed out until you hover over it and click it. I don't want to speak for Worik but I'm certain that she wouldn't be averse to being Liked that way as well. By the way, you can also like mods here on LL. Go to the location where you download the mod and go to the bottom of that post. In the right hand corner there will be a like button just like the ones here on this thread. In fact, they are usually easier to find since many people have been there before you.

Happy hunting!

Remember to dump your whole skyrim folder on an external disk.

Stuff like that may happen every day again :classic_wacko:
