Rooker Posted July 13, 2018 Posted July 13, 2018 I'm trying to figure out how to reduce load times for FO4 because it's insane to be looking at loading screens for 2 minutes when I have an SSD, 16GB of RAM and a 1050Ti. While googling, I keep running across vague references to something called Special K / FO4W (or FO4Works). Does anyone have an actual description of what this is supposed to be and what it does? All I can find is a github page with a long list of updates and zero descriptions of what the heck it is.
Akzyra Posted July 13, 2018 Posted July 13, 2018 https://steamcommunity.com/groups/SpecialK_Mods Can't find a real connection to Skyrim or Fallout. You are probably better of using performance mods tailored for FO4. Edit: https://github.com/Kaldaien/FO4W Unless you need Borderless Fullscreen, but I think there are other ways, like editing the INI files.
ToJKa Posted July 13, 2018 Posted July 13, 2018 To me it always seemed it took so long because it loads 3D models for the load screen. Try a mod that disables that, it may help.
Reginald_001 Posted July 13, 2018 Posted July 13, 2018 It was never long for me. Until the first CC content was added, after that update, starting up the game takes almost a minute. Even though I have state of the art hardware. I think the game is actually going online for things. I was going to do a test with disabling my internet, to see if that would speed up start up times, but never actually did. I'll do so now.
Reginald_001 Posted July 13, 2018 Posted July 13, 2018 I tested it completely offline but it was still taking almost 2 minutes to start the game. I was checking my task manager and saw my virus scanner was using most of the CPU time during the wait. Then I turned off Windows Defenders Real Time scanning. And it started in 3 SECONDS EVERY TIME. I re-enabled it and... Again it took almost 2 minutes to start fallout. Advice: Disable your anti-virus, try again. This guy seemed to have the same issue, already back in '16: https://steamcommunity.com/app/377160/discussions/0/412448158147276721/ I think the timing with the CC update was because I upgraded to win 10 around the same time.
Rooker Posted July 13, 2018 Author Posted July 13, 2018 I don't have the Creation Club. I still have version 1.9 of the game and haven't felt any real need to update yet past that. I have Steam and Fallout firewalled anyway. Let me clarify what I meant by loading time. I meant going through loading doors or fast traveling. Like, standing outside the North Church and fast traveling inside to the Railroad, or vice versa. Going through the door from Goodneighbor to Downtown. That sort of thing. The game itself loads about as fast as I could expect. I used to run Fallout Performance Monitor and it doesn't seem to be a problem with loading assets, because the disk I/O barely moves after an initial burst, the GPU and CPU are barely being used during loading screens, RAM / VRAM changes to a certain level and then stays there. It's almost like there's a script somewhere that's either stuck in a loop or it's been told to sleep for 60 seconds before moving on. I read in several places that loading times are tied to framerate for some insane reason. Vsync is disabled, but I was capping with ENB. I stopped capping and load times have gone down some. I'll keep it uncapped and see how helpful that is.

I do this and I can keep my game in the 1.9 version without see Steam update it without my consent.
Rooker Posted July 14, 2018 Author Posted July 14, 2018 No, I keep them firewalled just on general principles. Fallout has no reason to have internet access and Steam tries to use my internet without my permission, it's one of the reasons why I despise it. Anyway, my loading problem seems to be solved now by uncapping the framerate. It loads about as fast as Skyrim now. I'm still lost about what that Special K thing is though. Is it like HiAlgo or something? I used that for a while when I had a potato PC.

I was getting this problem too, after the last update this was fixed. I knew it was a problem with the game, because i check HH monitor and the task manager, the game was doing nothing in the loading screen, took sometime to start to load, now all the time the game is in loading screen is transferring stuff to the GPU or reading the SSD. But there is some delay in the readings too, nvme 960evo 1tb here, the max transfer rate the game get is 300mb/s.

Depending on the mods you have, 4gb of vram is very little... example, for the high tex dlc, bethesda recommend a 1080ti (11gb vram), so check your textures to fit your memory.
