Skyrim CTD at save loadup Part 2

Recommended Posts

Posted

Okay, so recently, I just had this problem where whenever I was loading up a save, my game would CTD after stuttering a bit once loading. It was fixed by just loading up COC Qasmoke in the title screen and then loading up the save game, but now, not even that helps it. I've removed and added a few mods, but I've resorted them, started a new game, patched them with DSR, ASIS, and created a batch patch updated with the new mods, and yet still the game crashes. I've never had this kind of CTD before and it's really stumping me. I've done all of these:

  • Cleaned my master files and mods.
  • Sorted with LOOT
  • Check for compatibility issues with all my mods
  • Started a new save.
  • Turned my laptop on and off
  • Checked for crashes through TES5Edit
  • Check the Papyrus logs
  • Troubleshoot the new mods added
  • Loaded up the game with COC Qasmoke first

As usual, my mod list and logs.

I know you might get these kinds of crashes all the time, but nevertheless help is REALLY appreciated. Thank you soooooooooo much!

You can try a popular mod called Load Game CTD Fix if you have not already. Generally, this mod should not be needed on a properly modded Skyrim. There are some issues in your games setup and probably baked into your save. If you use Continue Game No Crash, get rid of it.

There is alot of stuff in your Papyrus from removed/disabled mods. You may benefit greatly from cleaning your save. I can post directions for cleaning your save if necessary.

You are using a fair amount of heavy/medium scripted mods. You should increase the following settings in Skyrim.ini. If you are using MO or NMM with profiles, you will need to make sure to edit the correct Skyrim.ini.

Okay, so both the mod and the Papyrus ini edits really helped with the load times and overall speed of the game. It made it much more faster, and I thank you for this. I was also able to start a new game and play for a good bit without crashes. However, once I exited the game and rebooted it to try and test it out, the second the load screen comes up from the saves, the game crashes. Same problem, including whenever I load from coc first. I would greatly appreciate it if you could show me to a guide of cleaning saves, although I am really confused why there would be scripts from removed mods since I try and keep my mod order unedited unless starting a new game.

first off, can you start a new game? if not then you have a different problem

does it crash loading into the worldspace or interiors because if you crash in interiors then there is something more to your problem

also i had the same problem as you and i use haven bag to save and load the game in the worldspace https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/21454

I can start a new game, and I can play for quite a bit, but the problem arrives, as show above, whenever I start up Skyrim for the second time. It crashes in both interiors and in worldspace. (with the new game, I have quicksaves in both the Ratway and in Riften, yet the game crashes in both.) I can't really use the mod because I can't start the game up in the first place....

ok it looks like you have a different problem then

hopefully it affects your game quickly because the next step is annoying

1. turn off all of your mods with the exception of the alternate start and its preq

2. start the game and after a while, save and quit(or not) then load the game

3. slowly turn on your mods (16-32 at a time) and repeat the above step until it starts crashing and then you can select a smaller selection of mods until you find the problem

and hopefully you will find the problem with these steps

I did that after I posted, and still no change. I can at least isolate the problem to a selection of mods though, so I'll do it once more and let you know the result. Thank you for your help!

Follow the S.T.E.P. guide to get yourself a stable installation. If you don't do that then your are just treating symptoms not curing the problem.

I've already followed a guide. Thank you for your advice though.

If you are confident that your installation is good then Invictaxe's advice is the way to go. As an alternate way you could just do half the mods at a time.

To clean your save, you can use Fallrim Tools. It requires Java, which you already have since you are using SkyProc mods.

Dismiss any Followers you have and move your character to a small/emptyish/scriptless cell. I usually use Calixtos home in Windhelm, which is empty and always empty since his quest is done.

Unequip any gear you have on and save.

Open Fallrim Tools by using Resaver.exe and open your save with it.

Click on Clean at the top left and checkmark both Show Unattached Instances and Undefined Elements.

You can now see what its found and go over the results if youd like.

Click Clean at the top and then click Remove Unattached Instances.

Click Clean at the top and then click Remove Undefined Elements.

Click File at the top and then select Save As and name it whatever.

Thats it. Your old save will still be there if for whichever reason you don't like the cleaned save.

In the future, if you ever intend to remove a mod, disable it first, then remake your bashed patch. Load your save and wait in an empty cell and wait for like 5-10 minutes while SKSE cleans some of it automatically and then clean the save with Fallrim Tools. These instructions are for Skyrim only. Its done abit differntly if you play Fallout 4.

Also disable all forms of auto save. They tend to happen at bad times. Best to get used to manual saving. Small interiors with minimal activity are ideal. Always make new saves and never overwrite older saves.

Okay, so when I went to clean the saves, nothing was found as unattached instances or undefined elements. Not sure why, but it's whatever. I cleaned the save, and the game didn't end up working, still crashing when loading in. However, after coming back to Skyrim from a tiny break, the saves seemed to work randomly. Thank you for your help either way!

If you start a new game that hasnt had mods disabled/removed from it, then it will unlikely find anything. It was worth a try and worth doing.

When you start up your notebook, wait like 5-10 minutes for everything to load up and for windows to get all of its startup routines over with. Start Mod Organizer first, so it loads up all your mods, and then try playing Skyrim.

Few points:

- do you have the Crash Fixes mod installed?  It isn't a .esp, so it wouldn't show up in your load order (https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/72725/).  What you are describing sounds suspiciously like the string-table load CTD bug, which crash fixes addresses (save games becoming corrupted while the game itself is still playable).

- When you run FNIS, how many animations are being added?  There should be a line showing human and a line showing creatures.  If combined the number is getting much more than 13,000 you may be reaching the point when the game becomes unable to load because of too many animations.  If this is the case, try removing animations that you are not using (example, downgrade from ZAP 8.0+ to ZAP 8.0 or remove SLAL packs that you don't use often).
