eruath Posted April 3, 2018 Posted April 3, 2018 Hello and thanks in advance for any help... I'm having CTDs about 10 minutes into a new game which I cannot figure out. If I could understand what the osronline analysis was telling me I'm sure I could fix it... but It doesn't mean much to me and all the code lines from the analysis I've googled turn up nothing. What I need is for someone who understands this to point me in the right direction. Is this a corrupted sound or nif file? (I don't think so because the crash happens in different times and places and logs show the game reading different files before crash) Is it some kind of windows problem? I'm at my wits end. Any help reading this minidump will be greatly appreciated. osronline crash analysis and load order can be found hidden below. dankmemesxd Posted April 3, 2018 Posted April 3, 2018 First of all, make the text white (its black, you need to mark it to be able to read without destroying your eyes) and post your load order and a papyrus log. (the newest one, its created on a game crash) and then I maybe can help, because tbh this is my first time seeing something like OSR. And where does the crash occur? In the alternative start cell or in random places or maybe in a forest, outside?
eruath Posted April 3, 2018 Author Posted April 3, 2018 Thanks for the response dankmemesxd. Load order as a text file can be found at the end of my original post . Yes... I know I've got tons of mods. That's what makes finding the reasons for these ctd's so much fun. Also... I don't use papyrus logs anymore. They have never proved very useful to me in fixing the problems I've had. I use alternative start... the crash occurs within the first 15 minutes of play once I exit the shipwrecked boat in the "you've been shipwrecked off the coast" scenario. It occurs both inside and outside and when I fast travel to a different location. I have one save just before the crash.... and when I reload that save I invariably crash about 10-15 seconds after I load it. So the crash seems to have something to do with something already loaded into that save rather than something triggered from outside skyrim. The crash is always of either the exception c0000005 or kernal32 error kind, which I know is not very helpful.
Grey Cloud Posted April 3, 2018 Posted April 3, 2018 1. Please use spoiler tags rather than pasting a wall of text. 2. Your OSR crash dump info is virtually useless here. 3. What is that Mod Organiser stuff on your desktop? Please tell us that you have not installed MO there? 4. Post your load order directly into a post. People don't like downloading things from strangers. 5. Answer the questions dankmemesxd asked about where the CTDs occur. 6. Assuming you have actually had that mod load working, when did it start crashing?
eruath Posted April 3, 2018 Author Posted April 3, 2018 OK ... I think I have my post straightened out according to the post rules now. Sorry... this is my first time using spoiler tags. so... yes both my skyrim folder with game and all mod organizer stuff are in folders on my desktop where they are easy to use and I can find what I'm looking for. Is there a reason not to have them there? I've never had a problem with it as far as I know. CTDs have occurred all around the coast north of Dawnstar... in Dawnstar and in the Inn in Dawnstar. Also in Yngvild. Just about anywhere I could reach walking around in the first ten or fifteen minutes of the game. (the crashes occur from 5-15 minutes into a new game once I leave the shipwreck, though once I died and was sent to the thrroat of the world... via DragonSouls, and I could not get the game to crash after that even after fast traveling back to the area where I was having the problem.
RohZima Posted April 4, 2018 Posted April 4, 2018 I doubt the location or time of crashes is relevant, think you just have an unstable game and you are over thinking the fix. My solution is boring but it works: 1. Start new game with no mods (assume it works) 2. Add half of your mods back (enable plugins) 3. If its working for 30 mins, add the other half. 4. Assuming it starts crashing again, you know that the conflict is caused by a mod in the second half of your mods. 5. Disable half of the second half and test, repeating that process of elimination till you find the mod that is causing it.
Uncle64 Posted April 4, 2018 Posted April 4, 2018 Since you are using MO then your left side is also important. And if you have installed MO on your desktop, you should consider to move MO from there.
Zitsandrash86 Posted April 4, 2018 Posted April 4, 2018 1 hour ago, Uncle64 said: Since you are using MO then your left side is also important. And if you have installed MO on your desktop, you should consider to move MO from there. What would be a better alternative to MO? I am extremely confused about mod orders, though I do have a grasp of it there is just so many conflicting opinions with the classic "no order is the same so no one really knows" responses. I would like to think I know what I'm doing after 125+ hours of modding/troubleshooting experience but the truth is I'm just shooting in the dark and hoping to achieve small victories before getting bored and doing something else.
allsunday Posted April 4, 2018 Posted April 4, 2018 If your game keeps crashing at a predictable moment it most CERTAINLY is a mod that's causing the ctd. All you have to do is disable your mod plugins and use the process of elimination to solve this. Once you know what mod is causing the problem then you can decide to remove it, update it, find a patch for it, or reinstall it. You have two choices, either take an hour or two and solve this as I instructed or wait days and weeks for someone to maybe probably very unlikely guess the right answer -- if you're lucky....
eruath Posted April 4, 2018 Author Posted April 4, 2018 So two things.... Can anyone tell why having MO in a folder on my desktop is bad (had it there for 5 years and game was stable) and where should it be if not there? Second.... I'm getting from everyone that the crash analysis is worthless , at least in this case. This bums me out cause it seems all the various crash logs aren't helpful except for fixing the crashes I know how to fix without them. Thanks everyone for your input... Rhozimas method is the right one of course... I was just trying to avoid another ten hours of work. (It takes me two hours to sort out my mcm once I have my load order set up.)
dankmemesxd Posted April 4, 2018 Posted April 4, 2018 So your game is installed on desktop and mods too(drive C)??? Even it it has nothing to do with crashes I heartly recommend you to move your mods, mod organizer and game to a nonsystem drive.
dankmemesxd Posted April 4, 2018 Posted April 4, 2018 And if your game was stable, maybe try to disable the mods you added recently.
Grey Cloud Posted April 4, 2018 Posted April 4, 2018 From a purely Windows perspective you should keep your desktop as free/uncluttered as possible. On boot up Windows loads your desktop so keeping it uncluttered reduces boot time. Use desktop shortcuts. General good computing practice says do not install stuff to your desktop. Have you looked at any of the tutorials for installing MO or anything to do with modding Skyrim? None I have ever seen recommend installling anything to the desktop. There is nothing wrong with MO (or NMM which I use). As for load orders, you are correct that there is no objectively correct order but there are some ground-rules that need to be followed. As I see it you have two options: 1. A complete reinstall following one of the guides such as S.T.E.P. or 2. Follow RohZima's advice and do the 'binary chop' #2 will work but if you don't have a stable install the problems will manifest again. #1 will cost you umpteen hours of work but will save you much grief in the long term. Re the time it takes to set up your MCMs: Do you use the export/import settings option which many of them have?
eruath Posted April 4, 2018 Author Posted April 4, 2018 So if I moved both MO and Skyrim to , say, my user folder where the user documents and pictures folders are, that would be better? (I originally moved everything to desktop to get them out of program folders as STEP recommended back when i first started modding years ago.) I have never heard before now that the desktop is a bad place to keep stuff... Though it's probably common knowledge.)
dankmemesxd Posted April 4, 2018 Posted April 4, 2018 Dont move it there because pictures and user documents are also kept on drive C. Also, do you have a steam install? If yes, steam should have a folder to store games (probably drive C, you should change it to other drivers) so skyrim goes there and mod manager is best to keep on the same drive as the game (its not that important tho). You dont need to reinstall MO, just make a folder named "mod organizer" and paste it there. If you will move your game aswell, you just need to change file paths in MO settings.
eruath Posted April 4, 2018 Author Posted April 4, 2018 So I have a Lenovo 520y... The c drive is ssd ...I have another drive, but it's not ssd. It seems a shame not to take advantage of the faster drive. Isn't that the whole point of designing a laptop like that? Do most people run their games from external drives? The Dell I used before only had a c drive unless you plugged in an external drive .... That can't be what everyone does. I thought it was avoiding UAC folders that was important and thought that's what I was doing. What greycloud said about the desktop makes sense, but it almost feels like my leg is being pulled with this c drive stuff.
dankmemesxd Posted April 4, 2018 Posted April 4, 2018 You can split the C drive into few other partitions easily, just google that.
eruath Posted April 4, 2018 Author Posted April 4, 2018 But why? Is it the way windows interacts with C drive? I've never heard this before. Googling doesn't seem to shed any light on this. (Amendment) further digging has uncovered many reasons for installing on another drive. I'm just naive and computer illiterate. Sorry. I guess I'll be spending tonight moving things around. Thanks for the heads up on this. (I'm so embarrassed!?)
