Bizarre nifskope error with a simple mashup cut-and-paste

Recommended Posts

I am trying to do a bit of mixing and matching with some Witcher gears - using some Kaer Morhan pants to replace the basic Cat Armour pants for a mashup. The parent nodes have the same name, I made sure to copy branch as you normally do, nodes are all there - everything LOOKS okay - but when I actually paste the pants branch from the KM mesh to the CA mesh I get an error that simply says "unknown block".

So, I tried the reverse - pasting the two torso armour meshes from the CA armour to the KM .nif. Now the KM mesh is missing the head node and two pauldron nodes, so I need to add them. No big deal, I copy them over and that seems to work just fine. However, when I try to post any of the pieces of of the CA torso mesh, it locks up .nifskope and almost crashes my whole computer (!).

I have ZERO clue what's going on. I tried to google the error and found nothing, which seems bizarre (I also can't seem to find any of my old nifskope tutorials I would refer to). I don't know if it matters, but I recently upgraded to the latest nifskope (v 2.0).

Anyway, if anyone could have a look and tell me what on earth I'm doing wrong, I'd appreciate it (.nifs attached).

The Kaer_0.nif has a shit ton of errors in it and is pretty much garbage. It this the original nif from the mod? Loading the file into nifskope threw up a shit ton of errors I'm guessing it was done in outfit studios as I have seen errors like this before from outfit studios files and usually you can fix it by loading it into outfit studios but not this file if you try to load it into outfit studios it'll crash it.

Yiiiiiiiiiikes. Wow. Well thanks for helping me figure out this one.

Yes, it's original, as downloaded from Nexus. Seems to be a lot of bad Kaer Morhan conversions out there; I found another one that only has one weight, and others with weird problems... I thought this one was done well given the nice screenshots... ha! The only really well done one is the Gravipacza Russian one, but it requires XPMS and I'm trying to avoid making alternate skeletons a requirement for this conversion set.

Luckily, it's not a big deal - I'll just extract the meshes from the Apachii Divine Elegance store "Casual Armour" instead to use for the mashup (since it's based on the Geralt Prologue armour, which uses the same pants and boots, thank goodness).

I actually have a couple follow-up questions now though!

1) How did you search for errors like that?

2) Now I'm wondering if I've unwittingly made errors like this myself in OS mesh edits I've done myself - what causes them?

3) How do you avoid making them?

Posted

1.) Those errors should of popped on nif load in nifskope as that is what they do for me when a nif has errors like that. If you are using 2.0 it'll throw up a error message and you can click the view info so that it shows you what errors there are.

2.) I downloaded both witcher kaer morhen armor upgrade and witcher 3 kaer morhen armour and loaded both files into outfit studios with no crash whats so ever. And since the mods only have a armor_1.nif I'm guessing that you ran it through body slide or tried to make a _0 and _1 for sliders to work.

3.) Not sure how to prevent it I don't play males so I don't use male armors unless I'm hacking them up to make a skimpy outfit for a female character and I'm not sure if bodyslide is really made for male stuff or not.

The Kaer Morhan set with only one weight is actually a different download - I was using one from a mod called Geralt's Prologue Gears, which includes a Kaer Morhen set (both the male version and CBBE):

The listing on that is weird too. I can find it via Google (which is how I originally found it), but not through Nexus itself!

The screenshots make me think it was originally ported for Fallout and then the author converted it for Skyrim as an afterthought, which may be the reason it's so riddled with errors.

It is NOT skyrim it is FALLOUT 4. Nifs from that file can't load into nifskope 1.1.3 it can only load into nifskope 2.0 or higher.

Look at the bone nodes those are from fallout 4 look at the textures use material. It has the fallout 4 pose not the skyrim pose.

Zip also contains material folder containing BGSM files also fallout 4. Again this is not a skyrim file it's a fallout 4 file.

If you click the authors name and then click user files you'll see that they have no files for skyrim at all and in total they have 5 files 4 for fallout 4 and 1 for oblivion. If you click fallout 4 you'll see 4 files listed and one of them is this one you linked. Chances are the link you posted is a old link and the uploader uploaded it to the wrong section and it was moved to the correct area and they never removed or deleted the old link.

If you load a fallout 4 nif into the skyrim outfit studios do work on it and then export it out it'll still have a bunch of fallout 4 crap in it and it'll throw up a bunch of errors in it. You must use nifskope 2.0 use outfit studios to make a test body so that you can load both the test body up and the altered fallout nif and then transfer the mesh from the fallout 4 nif to the test body then you can save it and then load the test body into outfit studios to do more work if needed.

Huh, neat. Didn't know you could actually convert between the games that easily using OS. And that solves that mystery!

What do you mean by a test body in Nifskope? Something with all the nodes, but no meshes?

Posted

I have a test body nif or two to use for when I'm doing work with fallout 4 nifs since you can load them into skyrims outfit studios. But when you export the nif out of outfit studios if you load the nif up into the older version of nifskope it'll throw up those same errors as yours did and the file will be invisible.

So I use that test body nif to transfer the mesh files from the bad nif to the test nif. You'll have to use nifskope 2.0 as that's the only thing that'll load the bad nif and once you transfer the files to the skyrim nif then save as to overwrite it and then start a new project and then run the test body nif through outfit studios again to readd all the bones and weight painting. You have to transfer the stuff from the one nif because it still is in the fallout 4 nif version as well as having lots of the fallout stuff in the nif and everything needs to be transferred to the skyrim nif version.

To transfer mesh files from one nif to another I do this. I open the body nif or nif I am going to transfer something to and then I open the nif that I'm going to transfer from.

I then right click the first piece from the nif I'm transferring from and go to block - copy branch then the nif I'm transferring the piece to I right click scene root and go to block - paste branch once all pieces are in the nif I save as to overwrite the nif.

The last bit I know about, that's pretty basic for doing any sort of mashup, but the rest is new and useful. Thanks for all your information and help!

At least it´s the best to start with the clothing from new inside of a 3d-software and prepare it for the game (skyrim) as usually. This files need to have only one wrong parameter set, and skyrim can CTD or crash at a later point of gameplay.

You have to weight the clothing to the body and export it with all nessessary bone-weights/links and then you can import it into bodyslide and look forward to get a suiting clothing for the characters.

nightasy  has an old, but well made video-tutorial for clothing on youtube:    07-CA4S      and so on

p.s. do you have access to the witchers meshes and textures yourself?....(solved: I loaded a bunch of meshes from witcher 3 - maybe I can find some stuff for skyrim)

Yeah, there's a TON of Witcher ports and mashups based on Witcher ports out there, so there should be no shortage of materials available.

Witcher materials are featuring very heavily in my outfit overhaul. I'm basically completing the old Credo mod to completely medievalize all of Skyrim's armours (and some clothing - peasant clothing doesn't really need an overhaul, though it could use more variety), in conjunction with similar mods such as Rebirth of an Empire.

A lot of the base Skyrim armours are (IMO) pretty damned ugly and impractical. I could either overhaul everything to be more high-medieval or to go "true viking" (lots of mods for both). Since it also annoyed me that so many of my favourite outfits were based off Witcher clothes or other medieval games and so didn't match the rest of the inhabitants of Skyrim at all, AND most of the 'true viking' Skyrim mods are of lower quality than the BDO/Witcher medieval ones, I opted for medieval.
