Dark Brotherhood Buggy

1.   I had not played the DB Quest of skyrim in some time on a new character. In fact last time I played it was before I got the legendary eddition with all the DLC's.

2. I don't remeber ever having a problem with it, at all. I remember playing through it many time's, in fact it use to be one of my first Quest's to undertake, because of all the Paralysis spell's, and potions one could get in it. These were harder to come by in the Original game, with No DLC's.

3. Any way I decided to complete the Brotherhood quest on this playthrough.

A. First the Courier never came, and sleeping no matter where or how long never worked, I tried everything I could think of, and a Dozen or more Net fixes to no avail.

B. finally after killing the Orphanage person, and completing the Prologue Quest. I opened Console, and typed

Stopquest Darkbrotherhood

resetquest Darkbrotherhood

Then I could sleep, and the kidnapping would happen.

4. Then I returned from the "Mourning Never Comes" quest ( also had to do a set stage on this one, as Alain Dufont would not register as Dead, and quest would not complete " setstage DB03 40 " ), and again it was bugged out. Fortunately I had saved just outside the door, so I did the  Console again before entering the sanctuary.

Stopquest Darkbrotherhood

resetquest Darkbrotherhood

5. and again things started to move again.

6. after this other than I think another stage set or 2, I managed to get to the Cicero at dawn star problem, but upon entering the Dawnstar sanctuary, Cicero never appeared, I got tired of tracking down fixes by this time, and just set stage " setstage DB07 60" and went back to Report in.

7. After that I think everything moved forward, with no more major hitches.

8. I have heard that the reason the Dark Brotherhood got so messed up was that stupid DLC, I never play call "Hearthfires".  I mean I never had a problem with this quest before I got the Legendary version with all DLC's, so I do not doubt this.

9. Has anyone ever seen, or do they make a fix for all these troubles, I am hearing came from Bethesda's Poorly done Hearthfires.

[  I run the Unofficial patches, they never address any real bug's, like trying to fix the troubles with getting Hjerim ( A Real Bug ), which is a real buggy mess, and troubles like this.

They just seem to want to make barrels illegal to put things in, and  tiny graphic things, and in general just mess up little things that are not really problems at all, but to me more of a personal taste thing.   I can turn the unofficial patch off, and play the game, and seldom even notice that the unofficial patch is gone.  ]

10. By the way Hearth fires works, but it never seemed to consider what it did to the rest of the game, I have heard that Bethesda's defense was that hearth fire's was to be and after the end of the game DLC, which is total Bull to me. We most of Us I think, tend to keep them all running most all of the time, because we who use mod's, find dependency's placed on them, so we need them.

11. Anyway If anyone created a mod that fixed all these problems I would like to know.  As I said before I got all the DLC's there was never a Problem with Dark Brotherhood.

12. Main thing is this was one of the more enjoyable Quest's to do, and rewarding in the Items you got, and the Companion's that you could acquire upon finishing it, and it is a shame that it is so buggy for Me.

Also according to the number of attempted fixes I found on the net, quite a few other people have problems with it too.

Well, i only played it once and only with leg edition BUT...

A. First the Courier never came, and sleeping no matter where or how long never worked, I tried everything I could think of, and a Dozen or more Net fixes to no avail.

B. finally after killing the Orphanage person, and completing the Prologue Quest. I opened Console, and typed

this is the wrong order. First you go to Windhelm, hear about Aventinus, kill the orphanage person, then you get the courier. If this was different without DLCs, possibly it's not a bug but just things different than what you expect?

Rumor about Aventinus > quest from the boy > kill "Grelod the kind", finish quest with Aventus > letter from courier "we know" > sleeping event > invitation into the sanctuary.

That is the way this chain goes.

As for your problem, I would like to know if it's the only problem of your setup. If there are further mods not working as intended, it could your setup. If there is only this one vanilla quest line not working, it could be a broken DL of the game itself (?), or some mod interfering with the vanilla event chain (?). Both guesses, this.

But, please keep in mind that nobody knows what your setup looks like, how stable your Skyrim is and well you know to use a mod manager and so on and so forth (plus cleaning via TES5Edit e.g.).

a couple of notes about this vanilla questline (on LE) from the perspective of having played it a fair amount (on console as well as computer)

Swiftstep gave the correct order (for LE and console)

1 - get rumor about Aventinus (from barkeeps or arrival at Windhelm - the outside guards will normally give that rumor as you approach the city gates if you have not

     been to Windhelm before).

2 - talk to Aventinus (if you first approach there is a vanilla scripted scene with a adult and child right outside his house that does not affect the actual quest)

3 - accept quest from Aventinus

4 - kil "Grelod the Kind" (get nice sentiments from the other kids)

5 - finish quest with Aventinus

6 - get letter from courier (see side note in spoiler)

side note - most of the time i see a problem with this quest it is due to either courier or PEBKAC (problem exists between keyboard and computer)- ie doing stuff like attacking courier or gaurds with courier inbound or fast traveling after the courier is dispatched etc (you can not always tell you did something like this last one).

the courier can have issues getting to you due to vanilla stuff, mods that affect the courier, mods that affect the courier's quest, and mods that affect the landscape. mods that affect the courier or it's quest are pretty self explanatory.  mods that affect the landscape can affect the courier due to the way the vanilla courier works.  if my understanding is correct the vanilla courier is stored in a non accessible cell when not in use and the items delivered are placed into a container in a similar (might be the same) cell.  at certain points (player leveling up, quests can tell it to do this too) the story manger checks the container and if anything is there transfers it to the courier who then goes and finds the player (provided the player is in a acceptable place - inns, city streets, player home) but the check happens on a location change (needs a loading screen). an issue (problem) can occur when the courier has gotten the item and started to go to the player.  the courier warps (teleports) out of the storage cell to a type of map marker that is close to the player, but not directly to the player, so that normally the courier then runs up to the player.  the problem with this is that under the right (wrong) circumstances the courier can actually warp to a location he can not get from to the player (one of the times a lot of players will see this is when the courier warps INTO the Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary near Dawnstar, and the player has not progressed the DB questline to open it yet).  if this happens anywhere (not just the mentioned DB Sanctuary) the courier will attempt to find the player again, but sometimes it takes the player leaving the area or leveling or doing something else to retrigger the courier trying to "make the delivery".  most of the time there are enough acceptable map markers for the courier to warp to that it does not happen often, but this can happen on any game, depending on player location at time courier is "making a delivery", what the player is doing, and navmesh (this is where mods affecting the landscape can affect the courier).  i put the mod in that replaces the vanilla courier with Lilly (Seraphim courier replacer for the Provincal Courier Service). after putting this mod in (i did it for the looks), i noticed that Lilly (my in game courier) almost never (seen it happen 1 time total) runs into this issue (probably because she is not in a storage cell), and it has 1 other major advantage - a quest that is used to place a map marker on her.  so if i think i should have gotten a delivery, and didn't get it, i can always use the map marker to go talk to her (at which time she will give me any deliveries that should have been made).

7 - sleep and get teleported to the "invite location" ( i forget off-hand whether you need to sleep in a safe or unsafe location)

8 - accept to do the Db questline or decline and kill the DB.

the main 2 vanilla quests that normally give me trouble are "Thane of Falkreath" and 'Lost to the Ages" (different problems with each).  if you really want to know i can

post about what the problems i run into with those are (and what works for me).

edit

a mod i use for debugging purposes mostly is "Are You There" which will let you find npcs and you can teleport them to you, or you to them.

use caution when using though it can break the game by moving npcs that need to be in specific places (or you into places you are not supposed

to go).

as for problems with Alain Dufont - if he is killed early it will bug out the DB quest, and there are some mods that add or change him in the game

(sorry i don't remember specific names off-hand) that can also cause problems.

i (personally) find that Cicero tends to behave better, for me at least, if i make sure to go do the little random encounter (quest) out by Lorieus Farm

before i do anything with the DB (other than hear the rumor about Aventinus).  the only time i had him not show up where he was supposed to, i used

"Are You There" and teleported (me to him) and lo and behold he was outside the farm (even though he should have progressed past there).
