CTD caused by mod corpses

Don't really know how to call the problem I have ...

I play Skyrim with a bunch of mods, in fact I have nearly 200 .esm and .esp in my list (as you know some mods like Hunterborn have more than one .esp). I play with my character for some time, but not as long as I did on my PS, so I don't think this problem is caused by game process. Also, my PC is pretty new.

So here is my problem: I can play without any issues for some hours, but the last days I get CTDs that are not the usual ones (that come up because a modded game is unstable). Suddenly when I enter a new cell (in the world or through a door) I get a CTD. I can reload my latest savegame or autosave, but after that I get a CTD every time I:

- enter a new cell

- try to save

- fast travel

I get this issue with nearly every savegame of this character, even older ones. The last time I had to relaod I savegame that was days old (poor me, but this isn't fun, isn't it?:smiley:). But the problem came back. I have to say that it came back in another part of the world (first time was when leaving Dead Men's Respite, now it was in Clockwork Castle) and it was another number of saves (so I can not say "after 10 saves from point X the game breaks").

I  did some research and read a post saying that this may be a bug appearing when you use a lot of mods and then delete them. Something about the game can't delete them really and might look for them or expects to find them. I did uncheck some mods via MO. I tried a lot and then found out I don't like them. I'm sure you know what I'm talking about.

Nevertheless I don't know how to fix this. I already use Crash Fixes and Fallrim Tools.

Savegames of other characters work just fine, although I just loaded and saved one of them to make sure the save-funktion isn't broken at all. Maybe the do break after some time too ...

Is there any way to fix this bug or clean the game without uninstalling everything?

I'm not even sure if it would help when just give up I start a new game.

Edit: This may be interesting: As I said fast travel causes a CTD. But using coc not. "coc qasmoke" and "coc whiterun" teleport me without any problems ...

 You might have a shitty mod like Duel or IP that still continually casting cloaks on dead people, even after they've left the cell of the dead

You might have a decapitation versus NPC nif issue

If it's a mod that continue to cast cloaks on them, it's just a shitty mod and the fix is get rid of it and start over.

On a completely unrelated note there is no such animal as a "cleanly uninstalled save", shit you take out is expected by the game permanently thereafter and unless you find and cleanse every instance of the offender AND the ability of the offender to alter the world state, your save will never actually be "clean".

Also check for bad navmeshes, and just because you have a "new" pc doesn't mean you're not thrashing the shit out of papyrus every time you enter a new cell.

this is why you should start a new game every time you uninstall a complex mod (read: anything that isnt a simple eyecandy mod)

do you remember which mods you uninstalled?

i think you could look into skyrim save tools (save cleaners) or whatever and see if cleaning yur save game with them doesnt help

try starting a new game and doing the same things you do now that cause ctd to make sure it is only because of unistalled mods and is not caused by anything else

I don't have Duel or IP installed (I had to google them, in fact).

And what do you mean with a mod "casting cloaks on dead people"? I'm not a native speaker so maybe that's why I don't get it... :blush:

About the bad navmeshes - how can I check for them?

The mods I just threw out where Undeath, Untamed, Emote Poses and also A Forsworn Story (but that was some time before the first crash).

Using the ReSaver of Fallrim Tools kills some "unattached instances" but that doesn't help. Same for Save Cleaner (no effect at all).

To be clear: I just unticked the mods in the MO-Menu (the mods themselves, not the .esp's in the right box) because I was afrait to break something when deleting mods completely. But with unticking them they should be out of the game, right?

The problem about starting a new game and trying to reproduce the error ist that I used my character for 3-4 months or so. And like I said: When I found an older save that still works, I could play again, but some day the ctd comes back, but not at the same point (location, queststage, etc.). And it's no fun to fear a crash every time I use a door :smiley:

Didn' know that the bigger mods are that evil that you have to start a completely new game ... So it's a gamble every time you test a mod? Either you like it and play along or you don't like it and you can start everything again from the Abandoned Prison or Helgen?

Well, maybe I was too optimistic thinking my game can handle testing several mods without breaking ... Shit happens :smiley:

did you look into your papyrus log?

if reverting to an earlier save solves the problem then i think it is because that save was made before you installed those mods

it doesnt matter if you uninstalled the mods since allegedly every mod you play with gets baked into your save

when you download newer versions of the mods you can usually see a warning like "clean save required" - exactly because even saving with an older version of a mod and then trying to play with a newer one can cause problems

and cloaks are...the magic stuff applied to actors that works on proximity or some such and applies effects to other actors

I don't get any papyrus logs. Even though I copied the lines in the skyrim.ini in "My Games"-folder

Quote

[Papyrus]
fPostLoadUpdateTimeMS=500.0
bEnableLogging=1
bEnableTrace=1
bLoadDebugInformation=1

And not every earlier savegame solves the problem, but I can't say where the magical line is drawn. Even savegames in other cells appear to be broken. It seems like they have to be several hours (of gaming) old to be uninfected.

And that saves already existed when I installed or deleted the mods. That is what bothers me. If the game would be broken after an installation I would know who the bad boy is. But now the breaks come out of the blue.

I use a clean save every time I start the game. First I load the one I did in the Abanmdoned Prison. That was created when I had only the Alternate Start-Mod installed (I needed that one because the carriage to Helgen didn't move, even after 2 re-installations). I just applied the character the game created and saved.

Every time I start the game I first load this savegame and then load my "real" one.

if you are using MO you need to open the ini files from the MO itself and edit them, not the ones installed with the game

there's a button at the top that opens the ini editors

Jeez, didn't think about that.

Okay, got the papyrus and opened it with the Viewer, but I don't understand a word. I just see a lot of warnings and errors ... Now I don't wonder why the game crashes. So would I :smiley:

Maybe one of you guys understand, what exactly the errors and warnings are. Or better: Where they come from
