sophiextime Posted October 9, 2017 Posted October 9, 2017 Hi. Can anyone help or suggest something because i am at my wits end. I have been running a fairly stable modded game. I have spent hours on my play-through. I have completed the Companions Questline. I have completed Solsteim ( Dragonborn) i have just finished the full Guild of Thieves quest-line and now starting Dawnguard. All the way through the thieves guild quests Riften was fine. Had one CTD approaching from the main gate but after that seemed fine. In and out of the city endlessly doing all its quests to completion. But now i cant get anywhere near the city. I havent added any mods or changed my load order. Just kept playing. But now no matter which direction i come at Riften i CTD. I have saved and tried moving in small amounts and loading saves but for the life of me as soon as i get level with either farm at both sides of Riften BAM.. CTD. Its every single time. Its so F**king annoying as i HAVE to pass Riften to even get to the Dawngaurd tower. and i never ever Teleport. I travel on foot everywhere and i stubbornly will NOT now start teleporting just to avoid a possible CTD and ruin my immersion. What could have changed at Riften to now 100% not let me close??!!! I am so so so close to just deleteing the F**king game now.
Sladen2019 Posted October 10, 2017 Posted October 10, 2017 A recent gpu driver or windows 10 update may have messed something up. I'd check your ini files to make sure everything is as it should be. A load order list would help and are you running Crash Fixes and ENBoost ?
valcon767 Posted October 10, 2017 Posted October 10, 2017 ok a shot in the dark (just a wild guess) ... I have had similar happen to me due to a decapitated head left on the ground (doubt this is the sole issue or you would be able to get there from the other way). you do know you can walk to Dayspring Canyon (the Dawnguard entrance valley) without going near Riften ?? possibly far enough away to avoid your ctd ok the path is as follows Starting from Largashbur (orc stronghold) walk along the southern edge heading east, stay at the edge of the mountains. you will walk past Darklight Tower, then Lost Tongue Overlook, then between Broken Helm Hollow and Stendarr's Beacon which will have you arrive at the road just barely north of Dayspring Canyon. go thru the Canyon to get the Dawnguard questline moving. I discovered this route one time when I had a 15K bounty in the Rift and was working on the DG questline (I just didn't want to deal with the prison time to clear it at that time). hopefully the information (on the path at least) is of some help
dharvinia Posted October 10, 2017 Posted October 10, 2017 Here is a quick question, if you go back in your saves, is there a point when you do not CTD when approaching Riften? It could just be a corrupt save. I had a similiar problem with Windhelm. I went back to a point where I could enter Windhelm without CTD. I made a new save, and I started my game from that point, no problems since.
sophiextime Posted October 10, 2017 Author Posted October 10, 2017 Thank you for your replies. Sladen : i am not sure what the exact correct ini files are so if you would have the right list that would be so helpful. I do have crash fixes but not ENBoost as i dont use any ENB's. I am due a driver update but its a manual thing so that hasnt happened yet without my knowing it. Valcon: I shall follow that route carefully and hopefully that will at least get me in and out of the Dawnguard entrance, thank you. Just wish i didnt have to go to these kind of lengths but i guess my game wont let me just enjoy it. Dharvina: i may if all else fails go waaay back to an old save, maybe way before i even started the Thieves Guild quests and just avoid doing them. I am wondering if completing them broke Riften But if it will let me at least walk around that city again without relentlessly CTDing then i will do that. I have been told that sometimes corpses / dead bodies can CTD an area. But i cant seem to see any and the moment i get even close to the culprit area to try to spot one i CTD
Sladen2019 Posted October 10, 2017 Posted October 10, 2017 You can use ENBoost for its memory functions. It doesnt require any graphics presets. You can grab v0.315 from this link near the bottom. http://enbdev.com/download_mod_tesskyrim.html Instructions for installing it at the Step site: It just involves putting 3 files into the main Skyrim folder where TESV.exe is. You don't need to use any mod managers to do this. http://wiki.step-project.com/ENBoost "If " you are on Windows 10, make sure to set VideoMemorySizeMB=4064 in enblocal.ini if you have at least 4 gig ram or more. it needs to be 4064 even if you have more. When the Windows 10 Fall update comes October 17th, you can change this value.
ppp Posted October 11, 2017 Posted October 11, 2017 If you can get to Dayspring Canyon, you could install SWIFT (Skyrim Wayshrines - Immersive Fast Travel). It places a Wayshrine at Dayspring, among other places, allowing you to consistently avoid Riften without Fast Traveling. There's a quest to learn how to activate Wayshrines. Or one of the mods that adds a Mark/Recall spell (which existed in the series prior to Oblivion). Have you tried a general cell reset? (Wait 30 days in an isolated cell, like a house, so corpses despawn and items respawn.)
Stiffon Posted October 12, 2017 Posted October 12, 2017 Also worth going to Steam and doing an integrity check. I recently had to run FNIS and it said I have an illegal copy as a warning and to start the game at leat once via Steam - really with 1900 hours played lol - integrity check found 1 file missing and I had to do a start through Steam and everything is ok. Might not be the issue but won't hurt. Edit - can't spell today lol
Naked Ekans Posted October 12, 2017 Posted October 12, 2017 It may sound crazy but when I have a CTD that I can't find the source, I use NVAC (yes, New Vegas Anti Crash), and it works. Just place the dll inside SKSE folder. Give it a try.
