Guest Lady Luck Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 The Naga Bhut Jolokia (Assamese: ভূত জলকীয়া bhut jôlôkia; Bengali: নাগা মরিচ naga morich;Nepali: 'Jogi Khursani' Manipuri: উমোরোক umorok , is a chili pepper previously recognized by Guinness World Records as the hottest pepper in the world. The pepper is also known as Naga Jolokia, ghost pepper, ghost chili pepper, and ghost chili. The Bhut Jolokia is an interspecific hybrid cultivated in the Nagaland and Assam region of northeastern India and parts of neighbouring Bangladesh. It grows in the Indian states of Assam, Nagaland and Manipur. It can also be found in rural Sri Lanka where it is known as Nai Mirris (cobra chili). There was initially some confusion and disagreement about whether the Bhut was a Capsicum frutescens ] or a Capsicum chinense pepper, but DNA tests showed it to be an interspecies hybrid, mostly C. chinense with some C. frutescens genes. In 2007, Guinness World Records certified the Bhut Jolokia as the world's hottest chili pepper, 400 times hotter than Tabasco sauce, however as of July 2012 Guinness World Records lists the Trinidad Scorpion "Butch T" as the hottest chili, recognised in March 2011. Dreamer102 Posted August 3, 2012 Posted August 3, 2012 Yikes! I can't even stand regular hot sauce, that thing would kill me.
Guest Posted August 4, 2012 Posted August 4, 2012 I absolutely love spicy foods. The hottest pepper that I've tried was the habanero (the "n" is supposed to have that tilde thing over it). Sadly I've been unable to find and eat a ghost chili in a dish anywhere. But it's one of my lifetime goals!
srayesmanll Posted August 4, 2012 Posted August 4, 2012 Actually, "habanero" doesn't have the tilde over the n. From what I have found, the word basically means "from Havana" (no tilde either).

gregathit Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 While I have never tried a ghost pepper, on a drunken dare I did consume a tom collins glass of hanbanero liquified peppers. Since I was so drunk it had no burning or any other impact on me at the time. Unfortunately when I woke up I found that I could not taste anything at all. That lasted for three days, and I will tell you it was ghastly! I barely ate or drank since everything tasted like ashes. On a good note it put a halt to two things: 1. Me getting recklessly drunk. 2. Me accepting dares. Not a bad trade off all things considered. That happened about 10 years ago so I guess I really did learn my lesson.
Ashal Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 I love spicy. I have a hot sauce made with Bhut Jalokia I put on damn near everything, http://www.amazon.com/The-Ghost-Hot-Sauce/dp/B002ATAJU0 It's fantastic, great balance of heat from the Bhut Jalokia and it's fruity flavor.
snarfies Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 I live in Philadelphia, and there's an awesome place called Jake's Sandwich Board (http://www.jakessandwichboard.com/). They have a "Fire" steak that, for $1 more, they will add ghost pepper sauce - I forget how much, but something between 5-10 drops. I did it once, had to sign a waiver. Yeah, it was pretty hot. I wound up only eating half, and then I had to have three beers and half a pint of ice cream. So, that was probably my full calorie intake for the week.
