IMO, and in my build, ALWAYS.   And use a memory tracker like Skyrim Performance Monitor or MemInfo.  I use the latter becasue it's light weight, but either will display the actual amount of memory that Old Skyrim is using.  Given that it is a 32 bit program and using DirectX9, in Windows 10 if I hit 3gigs my game will crash.  Always.

With CrashFixes, in crashfixPlugin.ini set the line "CustomMemoryBlockTotalSizeMb=" to whatever number will provide a console read out of memory usage to between 85 and 90.  Works well for me.

Finally I can play a v.e.r.y. load order game for a v.e.r.y. long time without the need to start a new game.

Just my opinion and experience.  Hope this helps.

Actually, Crashfixes should not be mandatory, If you mod properly and then you dont have need for it.

My self plays whit 255 active plugins and around 500-600 mods installed. No problem at all.

But if you insist to have more then 64000 strings in your save you will need it.
Restringer is one good thing to use, but sadly it dont work on all mods.

But there are lot of usefull information on the nexus page, that you should read, it will help you to make your Skyrim stable.

More information here.

What does "console read out of memory usage" mean? Is there a console command to determine that? I currently have my custommemoryblocktotalsize set to the default 64 and wonder if that needs to be changed. The Meminfo readings relating to memory are in the 450-800 range. (Referring to those 4 lines between VM and FPS)

Looking at the file CrashfixPlugin.ini in Crash Fixes, if you set CustomMemoryBlock=1 and MemoryInfoConsole=1, you can read the memory usage block size of your game by opening the console (press the tilde key).  By default the setting "CustomMemoryBlockTotalSizeMB" is set to 64.

Open the console and examine the two bottom lines (they are printed there by crash fixes, no command is necessary because MemoryInfoConsole puts them there, if set to "1");  in my game they read:

Memory Block (16) current 88.44%, highest 88.46%

Memory Block (32) current 64.66%, highest 64.66%

The lines in your console, when you look at them, will display different values than in mine.

Adjust the size of the "CustomMemoryBlockTotalSizeMB" upwards or downwards from the default 64 until your maximum memory block size is between 85% and 90%.  Setting the number higher than 64 will make the resulting percentage smaller.  Conversely, setting the number lower than 64 will make the resulting percentage larger.  My current setting is 120 and during a play through I find I have to adjust it periodically to keep the highest percentage between 85 and 90.

You can set the number to any digit.

By adjusting the CustomMemoryBlockTotalSizeMB as I've described (I read this tip somewhere, probably in the CrashFixes forum but perhaps elsewhere) my game now runs stably, until my memory usage creeps up to 3gigs, of course.  Then either I save and restart my game or it will CTD.  I'm no expert, just an experienced user.

Hope this helps.

EDIT:   I should add that this information is useful ONLY if you set "CustomMemoryBlock=1" in CrashFixPlugin.ini (if I remember correctly the setting is "0" by default.  The comment descriptions in the .ini file describe this detail.

Thanks. After changing those settings, I can now see the memory usage. The highest settings for the memory blocks range from a low of 32.01 to a high of 68.55%. Sounds like I could lower the custommemormyblocksize from the default 64.

Can you change the custom memory block number while being in game? Say, i alt tab to mo and change the value in crash fixes ini without closing the game? Is it necessary to close the game for new values to take effect?

"Works for me" is not a kind of advice and the chances of someone having exactly the modlist you do is pretty close to zero. In addition CFix addresses a hell of a lot more than save strings and most of those deal with unmodded skyrim, and should be mandatory.

I dont know what you talks about when you say "unmodded skyrim" there are not many that hangs around this forum that have unmodded skyrim.

Lets that statement you did make rest in peace.

No we dont share loadlists, that would be boring. But it would be easy when you try to help other people.

It is one long way to go to say that something should be mandatory. Since not all needs it, and it in some cases can make other issues. Like the fact that you need to start editing its ini file, if you dont know what you do and why, it will lead you in to one dead end in your modding.

There are also good information on the nexus page, that many people actually should read. There you have information about what settings do and why.

Many dont do that, they install it, and runs in to problem since they have the wrong settings in it.

They have mods that needs other settings and so on.

They have one friend that says that you need it, and after some time they starts to ask at Steamforum why their game crash all the time.

You check their loadlist, and there is no wrong whit it, but they have started to crash after they have installed the "mandatory" fixes.

All mods they have should run nice, they dont even have one of LL mods in it, perhaps Ineed/RND. You know the basic mods we all use.

If one thing works, dont try to fix it. If you need it, then you should use it, and you need to read carefully what you need to do. Sadly many dont do that.

That is why it should not be mandatory. Not all do know how to install it properly.

Usleep/SKSE those are mandatory.

But there are those who dont even think that. That even says that they mess the game up, and makes it crash and unstable.

There are even people that struggles whit installing SKSE properly, and crash since they dont understand that they need skse.ini

I have been playing Skyrim since day one and modded it heavy since 5 years now. One thing I have learn is you need to know the mod you add.

What it do, since there are many mods that alters stuff you did not know that it alter.

And why you need to place them in one specific order, LOOT do help you but it do wrong whit some mods. We all do know that.

If you dont know, you need to ask and take in other peoples suggestions, like we do in this tread.

Dont forget the fact that all PC are not build the same, all have different setups. Different cpu/gpu/mainboards combo that also effect your game stability.

Now when MS are fixing Dx9 we will see other effects, since crashfixes try to fix some of those issues to.

I dont say it should not be mandatory only for being one stupid prick.

We all think different, and that is good. I did say why I did think different.
