Idea: free games developed by LoversLab

First of all, I know that most users of this forum are players and have players who make mods for their favourite games because they simply enjoy and accept suggestions from players who don't know how to do mods. OK, but there are many people who have experience in games like Blender, RPG Maker, Game Maker... and then I started to wonder "why players who have experience in any of these softwares simply don't develop free games for forum users?".

From another thread, form another Contributor: "Good luck finding a team with that much time on their hands and skill without funding though" (c.f. @blabba)

Do you think doing a game is something quick and easy? And the team coordination? The objectives?

And all of this for free and glory?

I am not in.

Tbh, like with most people actually working in game development, most of us modders are one-trick ponies. Some of us can make awesome 3D models but can't write code. Some of us know how to write code but can't draw a stick figure to save their life (that's me!). Making a game from scratch takes -all- skills related to game development. Modelling, animating, coding, writing. You need a team to make a game from scratch. Just like in real life. And it's rock hard to convince and manage a team of volunteers to create something from scratch for a long period of time without seeing much in terms of results at first. Which is why it doesn't happen. At all. The grand total of community developed games that can compete in any shape or fashion with commercially developed games is zero for exactly that reason.

Of course you also have the problem that people may have the time now, but in 3-6 months time real life gets in the way and at that point they do not have the time to commit to the development.

Same thing you see quite often here and on nexus, very active modder suddenly stops pretty much because real life gets in the way in what ever way, shape or form.

The first question you should ask yourself is, "Why would they develop free games for the forum's users?" For glory? Because they enjoy making mods so much that do it as a hobby for everyone?

The short answer is that it takes effort to make a mod and even more to make a full game. Everyone has a real life with different amounts of free time and willingness to devote to these random free games you're suggesting. It's just not feesable for most people.
