Darkening Demise Posted September 19, 2015 Posted September 19, 2015 Since yesterday Firefox has been opening random pages to different sites whenever I click on stuff. If I open my email or click the back button I may be sent to a different site. If I click on a page I may get a new window opened with some strange ad and BS schemes. One time I got one that said my Windows 7 PC has ads pop up enabled you should call this toll free number from Charter to disable ads before you do anything else. It's really annoying and freaky. Can't find the source of the cause. No new plugins in Firefox, nothing new is being detected of recent install when looking at programs within the control panel. Strangely I also cannot download things now either from loverslab or anywhere. I'm also loosing the ability to click on anything except to close my browser. Here's some images to show what I'm getting. A strange address below and a page that pops open every now and then. I just tried to open the signature image link I have for Patreon and this appears. I'm also running a full system scan but it's Norton so I'll be screwed either way.
RitualClarity Posted September 19, 2015 Posted September 19, 2015 I use Firefox most of the time and don't have that problem. I would tend to think that you have some virus or malware or something that has hijacked the program. Often when stuff is being done without your permission it is due to this.
DeadSomething Posted September 19, 2015 Posted September 19, 2015 i get a warning from my avast when it firefox tries to load some ads here on LL. it says it cancelled the connection to the website and that's it. i tried to figure out what website/file it is, so i could put it into adblocker so it doesnt appear anymore, but i couldnt find it in my AV.
RitualClarity Posted September 19, 2015 Posted September 19, 2015 It is likely that Avast is just giving warnings and blocking some of the sites because they "look" like something that is bad. I have many pages even on other "mainstream" pages that get that same result with another antivirus program. It is pretty much common. I use Adblock for most sites except for this one and haven't had any problems with the ads that pop up from LL so far. So I don't believe there is any need to add to AdBlock those links that you are having a hard time getting access to. In many antivirus there are logs. Some are broken down into different categories. I mainly watch for antispam and filtered webpages. (links that can lead you to bad sites)
BoxerBabe Posted September 19, 2015 Posted September 19, 2015 You have malware. When I have any type of browser hijacking malware to get rid of I run Kaspersky TDSSKiller, then rkiller & adwcleaner (sometimes adwcleaner only is enough) in safe mode. last a common anti virus like malwarebytes or Eset. That usually takes care of them. Be sure to check your Hosts file for any redirects. I've dealt with this type of malware for many of my clients.
DeadSomething Posted September 19, 2015 Posted September 19, 2015 for support of some older games which got discontinued by gamespy, i had to add to my hosts file manually - there is nothing suspiscious in there. I hope the avast popups i get are "false positives". or maybe it's not even the adbot, but some picture in a user's signature... as for your problem: - download some antimalware softwares - make a list of household chores or other stuff you could do without a computer - undig your music CDs and grab a CD player - get a linux mint portable boot DVD - unplug your network cable - boot from that disk and run the scanners - ? - profit
Darkening Demise Posted September 19, 2015 Author Posted September 19, 2015 Just tried clicking the text box to make a post here, got a new link here's the image. Also my anti virus has yet to detect anything and has been going for 3 hours now. I hate Norton but the family budget is tight and its what we all use to cut on costs. So anyway I'm out of ideas.
DeadSomething Posted September 19, 2015 Posted September 19, 2015 i know those fake "you got malware! download our tool to remove it!" messages. follow my guide and i hope you'll have it all back to normal soon.
Darkening Demise Posted September 19, 2015 Author Posted September 19, 2015 What should I exactly get to locate the malware? Holy crap even Steam has ads!
DeadSomething Posted September 19, 2015 Posted September 19, 2015 what i use: "malwarebytes antimalware" "Avast! Antivirus" "CCleaner" "HiJackThis" <- lists all services currently running and in all kinds of autostart, also registry entries that look suspiscious ask a friend/familymember/neighbor to download Linux Mint bootable iso. and burn it to a disk. also an additional disk with some antivirus including an updated virus detection databank and as many good antimalware you can get. don't download it from an infected OS. unplug all network cables. don't run the scanners from your current OS - run it from the bootable CD or DVD, so any rootkits in your current OS can't load. maybe your router is infected too, so scan the router too, but don't plug it into the telephone line yet! leave it offline.
Darkening Demise Posted September 19, 2015 Author Posted September 19, 2015 The ads say 'powered by lasuperba' I tried googling that and cannot follow any of the steps as I cannot find any plug ins or extensions in my browsers addons, nor any programs in control panel, or even anything in the task manager.
gregathit Posted September 19, 2015 Posted September 19, 2015 You have clearly been hacked. Norton is a terrible anti-virus. The free versions of Avast and several others are better. Follow the suggestions that are listed to get rid of what has infected you. You aren't going to "find" suspicious plugins, folks smart enough to hack you aren't going to leave an obvious "uninstall me" mechanism.
deathparade Posted September 19, 2015 Posted September 19, 2015 Not to be rude but you've been suggested 3 times now to run anti-malware and get a proper antivirus i suggest you follow up on that.

(marking for delete, canceling the task, pressing enter to confirm the deletion.) and that wasnt even a hacker's attack.
Darkening Demise Posted September 19, 2015 Author Posted September 19, 2015 Hacked?! Well I ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and got a lot of files removed, seems to be OK so far..... Was trying to find a software that could be trusted you just said get a program so I went looking for one. Waited about an hour got 2,000 something quarantined by Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. 0_o No more ads on Steam, no more redirects or pop ups, but how the hell did I get hacked?! I'm not one for all this computer tech stuff.

I'm not one for all this computer tech stuff. number 1 reason for infections is you have crap protection. Number 2 is you downloaded and installed stuff you shouldn't have which opened you up to infections. Number 3 you are running as an administer which makes it easier to install stuff deeper in the system. Solution. since you are "not one for all this computer tech stuff" I would suggest that you review some major tech sites about paid antivirus and malware software like Kapersky, ESET, etc and get it and install it. Go about your normal business installing and working and you should be fine. Keep it updated constantly. Most will give warnings that it hasn't been updated for whatever reason. I can use antivirus and install most every piece of software I need without any issues. If an issue arises it isn't aproblem it is an opportunity for me to investigate further. I had this happen with an update for a freeware program which was clean for years. I forced the download of the full copy, scanned it, found some programs that tracked me that triggered the warning. Researched it and it wasn't stated in the program's eula nor was it a safe program as others had problems with it possibly allowing openings for other virus / malware to enter. If a warning on a piece of software occurs investigate it through google etc if you still have problems post what you know here or somewhere you trust to see if it is indeed an issue. Or some sensitivity on the part of the antivirus.
