My opinion about Vortex

After reinstalling Skyrim yesterday I was tempted to install mods via Vortex 0.16.0. But, reading the reports about 322 errors (not necessarily related to Skyrim) I gave up from using it.  The thing that concerns me very much is the mean bug: mods deletion reports that some users had. I have all mods backuped but, going back on NMM and starting all over is waste of time. So, I will wait few months more before installing Vortex.

So, NMM is now supported outside of Nexus? Or still being worked on by the Nexus crew. Forgive me if I missed the memo but I wanted to ask now since I notice it is on Github.

Also wanted to ask if it was supported outside of Nexus (like MO went when Tannin started working with the Nexus team to create Vortex) as it means that it is now  a serious mod manager that is being used as opposed to a out of date discarded manager from Nexus.  I was seeing people still using it instead of going to Vortex it's replacement and was wondering why and debating on encouraging them to get a more modern updated manager. :D  But if it is being fully supported by the community and being actively developed outside of Nexus now, then there is no real reason to not continue if that is your favorite manager provided that it is kept up. :D

NMM has always worked well for me so I've not seen a reason to try Vortex which is still a WIP at the moment

Thanks,  I thought it was community supported and being mostly bug fixes is good enough. It worked well enough for most people. It installs and removes the mods pretty well without leaving junk behind (normally)  don't really see a need for it to be further developed but then again I am not a fan of NMM and not using it so I don't have the ability to see what might be desired or not on the manager.  Basically a manager keeps track of the mods you install and the overwrites and reverses them when you wish to uninstall the mod, that and help keep a load order organized.. that is really all a manager really needs to be. Anything extra from that is a bonus.

From what you are saying is Vortex can't really be trusted for a serious game play quite yet. It is good (apparently because I see many using it ) but not to a point where those that love NMM can jump off to the new manager Vortex. (some will never jump off provided the community keeps on fixing issues and providing solutions to make it work with the current games ... much like FOMM has stuck around due to the work of a few people making it relevant and functional for the games it covers.

I still use NMM 0.56.2. Don't like 0.65.+ version regardless of  working for some users. I had some serious issues with it. The only problem with the version I use is occasional freezing when uninstalling certain mods.Everything else works fine for me.

Vortex 0.16.5 is out

All the fixes and improvements of this and previous releases you can find here: https://github.com/Nexus-Mods/Vortex/releases

Note: I tried to use this version when reinstalled Skyrim. First, I had a problem because I couldn't import my mods from 0.56.2 NMM version. The oldest version of NMM that Vortex accept is 0.63+ in order to import the mods.

Second: Drag and drop mods from mod folder into Vortex caused permanent and unrecoverable deletion of the mods folder. Use "Drag and drop" option with extreme caution creating the backup of your mods folder first.

Third: Vortex requires a lot of adaptation on usage. I see it as not user friendly and simple. At least not for now. Even MO is simpler for use than Vortex, but that's only my opinion. Some may disagree with me and that's fine. :)

Upgrading NMM 0.56+ to NMM 0.65+?

1. I wouldn't recommend upgrading.

If you decide to upgrade it, you will have the box with "blah blah" and "Yes" to delete present setup and "No" to keep them. Don't forget to choose same drive (partition) for VirtualInstal folder.

If you press "Yes", NMM will uninstall all mods and reinstall them all. The benefit of this operation is that NMM will shorten your time for installation mods manually, but it might not install them by order and merge them properly.

If you press "No"  all mods will be showed as disabled in mods section although they will be active under plugins. But still some of them won't work properly.

I strongly recommend to use  "Tools" icon on the top of the manager and choose "Uninstall all active mods" and then reinstall them one by one as it should be and don't forget to run FNIS and LOOT.

2. I strongly recommend uninstalling NMM 0.56+ using CCleaner. When the program ask you if you want to keep your mods folder, confirm with "Yes".

After that delete NMM folder from "My documents". Also, run CCleaner registry cleaner before installing NMM 0.65+.

Once you install NMM 0.65+ choosing VirtualInstall location, add FNIS, Wrybash and Tes5edit programs to your NMM.

If you like having more then one profile I suggest you to install only basic mods for first (default) profile such as: SKSE, FNIS, Skelteon, SKYUI, Meshes and textures, HDT high heels, Jcontairnes and all similar mods needed to run the game without CTDs. There a few very good threads on LL about all needed mods for smooth gaming.

Then create a new Profile and install other mods such as immersive mods, overhauls, cheats, mod replacements and similar. So if anything goes wrong and the game freezes or CTDs, you can always delete second profile and make a new one based on the default one. In that case, your Skyrim will be "safe" from reinstalling.

I hop it helped.

Vortex officially became Beta mod manager

On the main Nexus page you can't see "Install NMM 0.65.+" any more. Instead of it, there is "Install Vortex" in upper right corner. Tanin and his team worked hard all this time and made a new hybrid; the combination of MO and NMM. The latest official version/release is  0.16.8.

More about it here:

Spoiler

In early 2017 we set out to develop an entirely new mod manager. It was our intention to create a mod manager that would be a suitable replacement for our ageing Nexus Mod Manager and combine its simplicity with a more powerful set of tools and features designed to make modding as accessible as possible to all types of modders - newcomers and veterans alike.

We gave this project the name Vortex, and our lead developer Tannin has been working on it along with our new Vortex developer Nagev to ensure that Vortex is powerful, easy to use, and accessible to a wide array of modders. If you’d like, you can get a breakdown of Vortex’s key features on our dedicated page.

After more than two years of development which involved an open alpha that started in January 2018, Vortex is now in a state where it is both stable and “feature complete”. That's not to say that we won't be adding plenty of new features to Vortex in the coming years, but the Vortex of today is one that will be a more than able mod management tool for the vast majority of mod users. We are therefore proud to roll out the Vortex beta to you, our community, in the hopes that Vortex will help you organise and fine tune your load orders and modding installations, as it has helped so many users during the alpha phase.

If you have a perfectly functioning load order and stable modded game then we highly recommend you do not move over to Vortex at this time. The main focus of Vortex is on making your game as easy to mod as possible, in the most stable way, with the least amount of effort and if your game is already stable, there's no point making even a small effort to move over. However, for many of you who have been plagued by mod conflicts and issues, or who are starting a new playthrough or who just want to try out something new, Vortex might be a great fit.

If you need help deciding whether Vortex is right for you, you can find out in our help center.

If you have decided for yourself that you want to give Vortex a try, you can download it here. We’ll also be updating anywhere on our website that points to Nexus Mod Manager.

Vortex beta

We’re releasing Vortex as a beta because there are likely to be more pesky bugs we need to squash, however, it’s currently very stable and we’re confident enough in both its abilities and its state to make it the primary mod manager of Nexus Mods.

The beta is not intended to last forever, we have a clear roadmap of where we want to be before we officially hit the 1.0 full release and we’ll be listening to your feedback along the way. It is our utmost and realistic hope that this beta phase will not last any longer than the alpha stage has lasted.

In preparation for this announcement, we’ve been hard at work writing some helpful documentation to explain Vortex’s various features. We chose to put this on the wiki so anyone in the community can add their own articles and advice for using Vortex, and to help us ensure the content is up to date.

If you make tools for modders or have an idea for a great extension for Vortex you can check out our development documentation here.

Nexus Mods API - Coming soon…

The beta release of Vortex is a major milestone in the future of Nexus Mods. With that in mind we have another project we’re working on in the background to announce, the Nexus Mods API.

To offer deeper integration with our website and services we will be opening our new API to the public in the near future. What this means is, 3rd party applications and websites will be able to access data from Nexus Mods in a more robust and modern way than they do currently.

At the moment, Nexus Mod Manager and Mod Organizer (among others) use our older hook to work with the site, but as we continue to bring our code base up to date these applications will need to be updated to use our new API. We won’t cut off support straight away though, we’ll be working with these developers to allow a fair transition period before the old systems are turned off entirely. Of course, older versions of these programs will no longer be able to download directly from Nexus Mods after this time, but they will still work for manual mod installations.

We’ll be bringing you more information on our API closer to the time, so stay tuned!

NMM will still be upgraded and available for download but only on Github and not supported by Nexus team.

Before you decide to install Vortex I highly recommend to read all about the manager here: https://www.nexusmods.com/site/mods/1?tab=description

Rant about NMM 0.65.10

I don't know abut others but I'm very disappointed in ever version of NMM that came out after 0.62.+. Every version had problems with texture installing and merging; at least with two that I use(d): Leyenda skinny textures and Pride of Valhala and with What to wear mod. Every single release caused me a lot of problems with texture glitches and partial incompatibility with some mods, if I can call it. Installation of certain mods from Nexus such as papyrus Utility and similar mods always caused problems. NMM behaved like it doesn't know what and how to do merging mods. Damn. I envy every 0.65.+ user who doesn't have such problems.

If I wasn't warmed up for Vortex, because of the promise I publicly gave some time ago I would never abandon NMM 56.+

Hi,
I'd like to ask for some support with NMM ( 0.65.2 ) as I'm having a couple of issues with it ( maybe due to my inexperience and maybe due to how the tool has been projected to work ).

First things first , I'd like to move my mods to another hard drive without breaking them if possible and I was wondering how that could be achieved.

Second but more important issue.....NMM seems to be making my mods occupy too much room on my hard disc ( my Downloads folder weighs 53 gb and that's where all of my downloaded mods obviously end up first , then my steamapps folder weighs 92 gb....and skyrim is pretty much the only steam game installed atm.....and finally....NMM folder takes up to 196 gb....which means that about 300 gb of my hard disc are basically taken by skyrim and its mods only. Now, this is a bit weird since the whole collection of mods only weighs less than 53 gb.... ). May I know what happened there and eventually how to solve the issue ?

Thank you very much in advance.

Thank you very much in advance.

NMM have a multiple directory structure and is designed for download the mods with it.

The main store in my machine in located in D:\Games\Nexus Mod Manager\Skyrim\Mods

If you make a manual download and store it in a specific folder and press the green + simbol for add the mod, NMM make a pure copy of the zip file and store it in the mod's folder.

That make appear inside NMM with grey text.

When you click the green mark for install and activate that zip file is uncompresed inside the VirtualInstall folder and this folder is used for copy the files to your game DATA folder.

In the install process, if any file must be overwrited, NMM ask you if you want overwrite it and when you say YES the existing file inside game DATA is copied to the VirtualInstall\_overwrites folder

Then you have, for one side, the originals zip's files duplicated, the zip files expanded and copied to game DATA and the files overwrited in the overwrites folder.

The only way i know for save hard disk space is use the compress utility integrated with the operating system.

Locate your VirtualInstall and make left click over it. Select properties, advanced options and enable compress this folder.

If you have tats packs for SlaveTats you are wasting a lot of gig's because the textures of the tats need a lot of space and is recomended compress the folder DATA\textures\actors\character\SlaveTats

If you want transfer your NMM installation to another machine or to another HDD inside the same machine the best option is use the integrated backup utility inside NMM. Press the tools icon next to the profile selector and use Backup->create mod backup

Use the same version of NMM for restore the backup.

I not know if the backup can be restored in a diferent version of NMM.

I'm sorry Elf Prince but i have 65.10 and cero problems.

In my last big update some months ago i upgrade the same day DD from 3.3 to 4.1 and the old MNC to the new MNC SLAL without problems. Install Cosio and demonic and all works. I not use Leyenda, but i can download and try.

As I said: I envy to all who doesn't have a problem with any 0.65.+ version, but I do. :)

Just like I didn't have any problem with transferring to Vortex which works great for me, some people did have problems and it doesn't work well for them.

It's very strange as I've never had a problem with 65.10 or any of the previous versions. I've only ever used the default profile as I tend to play a game through until the end or I get bored so maybe that's the difference (just guessing here)

It is apparently having some issues with Fallout 4 (AAF) mod. NMM and also Vortex. Just an FYI.  At least currently. Someone posted on the AAF thread somewhere and once they moved to another manager (MO) the issue they had was done.  I believe they didn't do anything different.  Not sure about other mods than AAF.
