Best option for Windows OS upgrade?

I have a full OS reinstall planned for my PC.

What's the best Windows OS version for an aspiring Oblivion (and probably Skyrim, not for now though) modder?

I'm talking about stability, performance, and possibly backward compatibility with older hardware and software.

As for the version, 32 or 64 bit?

My hardware is rather aged, and includes a cheap Asrock Motherboard (AMD2+/AMD3 Ready) with integrated graphic card. The processor is an Athlon Phenom II X4 2.6 GHz.

64 bits for sure.

I use Win 7 on a laptop and Win 10 for my real PC.

I like Win 10 more. I had no problems with drivers or software compatibility (about 1 year old PC.)

For software/games, if they were working with Win 7 then they will be working with Win 10.

If they had problems working with Win 7, then probably they will NOT work on Win 10.

Skyrim works just fine on Win 10 64 bits. I have no idea about Oblivion.

32-bit OS for 4GB or less RAM, otherwise 64-bit. I'd suggest either Windows 7 or 8.1, if you have any concerns about privacy and control.

I'll keep both recommendations in mind when it'll be time to make a choice. Thank you.

I will be checking the topic regularly, in case anyone else feels like adding suggestions.

P.S.

RAM is 4 GB now,  but I can upgrade to 8 GB.

Greetings.

Hi "  Quiet " The Tail   ...  sorry i didn't saw your topic.

Older " machine " or not i think your AMD is still " stronger " enough to run Oblivion ( if Oblivion works, Skyrim will work too , probably much better depends of your settings ...

But seriously  " with an Integrated Graphic GPU " ... tell me it's not true , that's not something to play with .

Try to find an older Graphic card ( 8800 GT  minimum , i still use 3 of them without problem in Skyrim and Oblivion  n, of course i have better ... but i like these one very much ) .

... çà "  bounce " encore ferme là-dedans ...!   ;°)

... et pas un "Vertical  Soft Bounce "  uniquement ....

Cheers.

I'm using 8.1 and I have zero complaints.  I haven't made a move to 10, and probably won't until I get a new rig.  I'm not keen on reinstalling shit when I have everything working just right at the movement.  Whatever upgrade features that 10 may have, it just isn't worth me taking my precious little amount of free time for modding and gaming and spend it installing an OS and my programs again.  Totally not worth it to me.  Besides, I've yet to encounter anything my rig and 8.1 can't handle.......and being as I am a grumpy old dog:  "if it ain't broke, don't fuck with it."

Thank you guys.

I'm taking a little bit more time to decide (some say I take too much time to decide, in many contexts) but in the end my choice will be 8.1, I think.

An OEM version or a full paid version of Win7 at his end-of life as a product, with no more support, is all but appealing.

I should also buy some some new hardware, as AF suggested. I play at ridiculously low fps, the stuttering gives me sickness, at times...

LAPF animations run smoothly, though :D

I understand it has to to with your work with Lovender's armor and "vertical" Moving Breast, but really is the only part of your text I wasn't able to understand. The French I learned at school is not exactly "top of the notch".

Don't panic about Windows 7 "end of mainstream support".

MS stopped adding new features to Windows 7 in January 2015, but will be delivering security-relevant patches for Windows 7 until January 2020.

... so I just bought another copy of Windows 7 64bit, simply because I prefer the old UI and hate the Microsoft Account (and Microsoft Support, the arrogant bunch of incompetent pricks that will lock your MS account and blackmail you into giving them your credit card number. Happened to me on Xbox.)

Games magazines have compared the speed of Win 7, 8 and 10, they are very close to one another as far as FPS in games is concerned, so I recommend not believing the popular "you need Windows 10 it'll be much faster" argument.

About your hardware:

I had the Phenom XII and a 32 bit OS until recently. Wasteland wouldn't start, Fallout NV took ages to load up, and I kept modifying tiny The Sims 3 maps because medium and larger maps lagged like hell ...

The X4 you have should be more bearable, especially with 64 bit OS and 8GB RAM, but may not be able to play upcoming games such as Fallout 4.

German games mags have recently focussed on recommending the new AMD "APUs" with onboard graphics ... they're much slower and less energy-efficient than Intel CPUs, but also a lot cheaper.
I have a faint suspicion that German mags recommend the AMD CPUs so much because they're made in an AMD facility in Leipzig... But still you might want to take a look at one of their A10 CPUs as a possible alternative to a costly Intel CPU and graphics card upgrade.

Thanks for the contribution. Although it puts me back in "undecided" state.

I've decided to stay with Win7 Ultimate, 64-bit for now. Had it on my last desktop build with only 4GB RAM (actually Windows only ever seen 3.5GB) and it was okay. My neighbor inherited that PC.

On a more current MB and Intel I7 and can max to 16GB RAM, currently again running fine with Win7 Ultimate 64.

I tried 8 and 10 and just don't like the UI. In all reality, personal choice/preference does come into play. Sort of like some like Ubuntu and some only like pure Debian...

From Win 7 you can upgrade for free to Win 10. Still not SO outdated :)

Oblivion plays better on W10 than on W7, at least on my machines. Same with Skyrim.

Thanks for the contributions.

However, I think I can close the topic and mark it solved.

In the meantime Microsoft Store has stopped selling 8.1 and 7, to push the sales for Windows 10.

It seems I have no choice now.

You can buy still buy a 7 from Amazon (I hope).

I'll try that, thanks. It will be difficult to find it in my locale, though.

Worth a try, 270 eur are a pretty good sum for Win 10 Pro. :(

I'd just get the US English version, that's the least problematic version IMO. I personally don't care about localized services and other shit.
