Collector's Corner

Hi, I'm starting this thread for two reasons and I apologize if there's already a thread around here for the same topic but the LL search engine produced nothing.

- I'd like to open a discussion for people who like to collect things, whether it's stamps, action figures, hot wheels, movies, manga/anime....whatever and feel free to share stories, pics and anecdotes.

- Also I have a bit of a classic dilemma. I recently started collecting figures/statues again after a long hiatus but have directed my attention away from my old Hasbro, Mezco, McFarlane lines and more towards anime and manga-based PVC and Resin cast figures.

I'm currently not set out to complete a whole set of anything based on any particular IP but simply look for what appeals to me, based on style/sculptor artist, craftsmanship, paint and within a relative budget. Of course, I'm a little biased but not exclusively toward Neko/Animal-themed characters. I've always kind of kept a peripheral eye on things in this category over the years but just wasn't in the financial or space position to consider it. I'm still not, really but it allows me to focus more and decide what I really want and what to put on my watch list.

That all being said, I recently acquired a couple of the Yamato line of Tandem Twin Animal Girls by Kouichi Yamazaki but one in particular, Dog Annerose. She's an alternate version of Alma. The best in the line, imo and a bit on the rare side. It wasn't cheap but the retailer I bought it from was still considered a steal compared to what most other dealers were selling it for. It's authentic, new and pristine packaged.

I've searched elsewhere and couldn't find any sellers that were offering anywhere near the price.

The Tandem Twins came out around 2008 and are no longer in production as far as I know and have not found another one even close to what I got it for. The dilemma being is it's really nice statue, at around 12" with really great detail I'd love to display but unopened, I could easily turn it around for 2-3 times what I paid for.

I'd like any input some of you other collectors out there might have and may have experienced similar predicaments.

I collect primarily Figma figures, primarily Black Rock Shooter, Hatsune Miku and K-On. Some (K-On mostly) were harder to find as Figma figures sell out quickly but I found most of them on http://plamoya.com as they deal in some of the harder to find items. Now I pre-order any figma figures I want so I don't have to worry about not finding them or having to pay a markup from a reseller.

After 10+ years of playing Magic: the Gathering and collecting other things in between then and now I've really tried to divest myself from accumulating stuff as previous "Oooh shiny...must have it" moments have usually resulted in possessing something that I don't have sustained interest in and is now just a semi-valuable to valuable niche item that I no longer especially want with Veladrius' post reminding me that one of those things was a Black Rock Shooter pendant with the main one that really bugs me being a knife that I can't even legally carry around the state I live in. -_-

All that said, *sigh*, I've been steadily accruing graphic novels for the last several years and I suppose at this point I would consider myself someone who collects graphic novels to the point where I need to get a bookshelf that isn't complete shit to hold all of them.  I used to collect comics when I was a kid and at this point I think of a graphic novel as the comic book equivalent of buying the DVD box set for something.  Wait until it's done.  Make sure it's good and then buy it.

Cool! Good to know.

Hehehe, yeah. Especially with the cost per issue of comics today, Graphic Novels really do seem to make the most practical and economical sense, so long as you don't mind waiting a year or two when the initial story has run its course. I remember getting swept up in the 90's in the whole comics craze, variant covers and all the other cash-grab bullshit that ran rampant during that time, thinking they'd be worth something someday. Some of them are and will be but most of it is just taking up room in the closet/attic.

I dont have "collector hobby" but i do get real swords when i can afford it. I have a katana, nodachi/okatana and taichi sword already. Internet can call me a nerd but i always wanted a few wall hangers which also are potentially useful when some daylight junkie manages to get the door open. Only one of those is something like 440J stainless steel but that was cheap. My other ones are 55? HRC, 1050-65 Hi-carbon blade with sort of/real leather. You'll never know but my army "hunting knife" has a scabbard/sheath with similar feel and "texture" (conscription ahooy)

My next items to get are cold steel zweihänder and grosse messer but i need to do some planning. No real wall space lol.

Very nice. Some blades are just elegant in their simplicity and effectiveness. I'm not gun enthusiast in terms of going to the range but like fine blades, I can appreciate the craftsmanship and engineering that went into them. I wish I had the space and the money.

Heh.. I'd get (a) gun(s) too but i dont live in a "hunter region" so i probably dont get a carry permission for rifle.. And! small arms and such are banned from civilians in this country. Even a gun club members for what i heard, need to keep their guns in the club safes. so to speak.

Ahh, in the States you can practically get handguns in bargain bins at camping/hunting shops.

There's trade shows, pawn shops and flea markets everywhere for firearms of nearly any kind.

I collect plastic military models, mostly aircraft and ships.  Needless to say, non of them get built, and they are unassembled (in some cases partially assembled), in boxes, collecting dust.  All my paints are long gone so far as useability and I'd have to buy a whole new paint collection if I ever wanted to start again.  At least a hundred dollars - that I don't feel like spending on paint - just to get usable paint... and then with no experience in creating reasonable looking paint jobs, it'd just be a waste, I feel.

A note on 'collectables'.  Many of the things that are pushed as "collector items", to be sold at a profit down the road, end up getting nothing or next to nothing, because those who were interested in them also bought them, and then when it's time to "sell at a profit", everyone who wants them has them, and there's no market to get rid of them on, never mind a market to make money on.

Do you know, offhand, if Figma accessories (vehicles, chairs, etc) work with Revoltech figures?

Revoltech figures are a little larger than a figma, the top of a figma generally comes to the shoulders on the Revoltech figure.

That's what I kinda figured. I like both brands but some IP's/Characters are exclusive to one or the other but Revoltech doesn't offer much in the way of accessories outside of what comes with the figures.

Thanks
