Downloading it now while listening to the custom soundtrack on the modders webpage. Good soundtrack (no really)!

I want lore friendly quest mods and I thought perhaps this community might be one to ask. The last time that was asked here was early last year so, anyone else play new lands or "DLC sized" quest mods lately that strives to fit into Elder Scrolls lore?

The lorier the better!

Sock it to me.

I'm not sure what quest mods you've already played but a few that stood out for me are Wyrmstooth, Moon and Star, and Shadow of Meresis.

I would say Moon and Star is the most lore friendly of those 3, taking story elements from Morrowind. But the other two fit right in as well.

 Statements like these makes me laugh and shake my head.

Man, I think LOTR lore is literally Word of God so it's fucking watertight, because TES lore is -- because it's a game first and foremost -- somewhat sketchy and tends to act the way we record real-life history through differing points of view -- like one book on history contradicting another, or if you like, there are differing views as to where Talos came from -- is he from High Rock or Atmora?

It can be retconned as the authors would like to do.

There's the TES Redguard game which had ships armed with cannons, so some people think cannons are lore enough despite the presence and use of catapults later in Skyrim.

Going back to the topic, there's the Summerset mod, then the Redguard one, Gray Cowl of Nocturnal, and another set far out to the west, near the Akaviri lands.

This is precisely why I like TES's lore.

It's great to have solid rules to play by like in LotR since it keeps everything nice and clean, but leaving things up in the air and open to interpretation tends to lead to more creativity when coming up with something to fit within its blurry bounds.

Well, I certainly understand the looseness of TES lore but I think you would all be surprised by just how much information there is out there.

I'm a formerly active member of The Skyrim Blog and did background research to write a 27 chapter (unfinished) story about a Breton Farmgirl that goes all proto-succubus because life sucks and Skyrim does not rule for her. So, I've come to realize just how MUCH stuff there exists. It's insane! I think we can easily argue that there are more points of fact in TES fiction that exists than JR Tolkien put out in support of his masterworks.

There was a another guy from Europe I think that was a fountain of lore knowledge and he could really bring out some very obscure stuff anytime any of us had questions about the provinance of this, that and the other.

Having said that, there are a LOOOOT of blank spaces that have yet to be filled in. Much of the mythos is just one or two lines of text here and there.

I suppose, when I'm asking for lore friendly mods, I'm really looking for mods that clearly show a well researched approach to the story and a willingness by the mod author to make whatever new treasures (equipment or powers) they add into the game be balanced the way Bethesda would have done it, taking both the good and the bad of the game and just working with it instead of creating UBER godlike items or powers.

The guy behind summerset is definitely kinda rude, or at least he comes across that way in the nexus comments. He'd probably get you banned if you report any bugs lol or just say its your fault. That happened to me in one nexus mod, I reported a bug to the epic gameplay overhaul (who seems to be family of one of the mods on Nexus) and got banned for 3 days for harrassment lol. But probably because I first made the comment on his mod and he deleted it, so decided to private message him (even though the bug 100% came from his mod, and a month or so later he fixed it rofl)

If you compare to the guy behind RGX redguard mod, he is really helpful and you can tell he is a lot nicer and more willing to help people.

I haven't tried summsetset though yet. It looks good, but having to use fast travel is kinda unimmersive and I hated it when bethesda put it in...I always leave it off and have it disabled through other mods. None of the other new lands I ever had to use it, but ah well.

I like the look of the Redguard mod a lot more, and the author is a lot better. But, Summerset looks good too from what I've seen on the mod page.

The guy behind RGX mod is very helpful and nice. AND he doesn't force any College quests on you in order to get to the new area. I have no doubt that Summerset Isle took insane amount of time and hard work to complete, but forcing someone to do the entire CoW questline can be immersion breaking or just straight out annoying. Something tells me that posting this in the SI comment section isn't a good idea.

I'll download RGX today, it looks more fun and definitely less annoying to start. And it has pirates. Everything is better with pirates.

thats actually not a bad thing. unlike other quest mods, you arnt just handed another one as soon as it's installed, you actually have to do something for it. and being the arch mage plays into why you get the quest.

i deleted my post, but the one on Nexus wasnt, he moved it to the spoiler section, since i had mentioned a quest others may not have done yet.

and wait.. you have to use fast travel?

I guess so, according to his comments and his post page...fast travel must be active. Either he has scripts that teleport you around through fast travel, or something...but it isn't just for the opening quest.

I guess it is better than a new quest appearing out of nowhere, but it is kind of immersion breaking if someone is playing as a warrior, rogue, bandit, thief or something similar to that. In my opinion that is, I realize that not everyone is into role playing and/or sticking to their builds.

I think that official Dragonborn DLC did it right - you can visit the new area anytime you want without starting the main quest (even though it is required to fully explore some of the ruins). Doing the entire CoW questline can be a bit of a chore for someone who starts a new game and wants to get to the Summerset Isles as soon as possible.

well, when roleplaying as a thief/bandit style character, you(the character) could just look at it as a chance to scout the place for riches to plunder, and along the way get swept up into the over all quest of the place. after all, aside from 2-3 times, it's not like they actually require you to use magic.

just an option, i'm not really a RP type player, but would be my view most likely if i did.

also, havnt looked at RDX yet, was waiting til i finished the 5 quest mods i have installed to see which will be kept and which wont be. have..

Wyrmstooth (this one has done and will be staying, enjoyed it quite a bit)

Summerset Isle (currently working on, still undecided, needs more work and has some lore unfriendly items in it)

Undeath (did once, but didnt go for the lich transformation, was going to on my mage, but she is in Summerset atm)

Grey Cowl (for my thief.. when i get around to her)

Agent of Righteous might  (this one i am the most iffy on, havent started it at all yet tho)

I, for one, happen to be annoyed exactly because of that. The College line itself fits poorly into any character's narrative, as magic-focused characters barely learn a thing and physical characters become Archmage with the barest minimum of magic use. Forcing me to do such a badly written questline rubs me the wrong way.

annoyed with which? the collage quest chain or the mod being linked to it?

if it's the latter, i can only say, dont worry about it, for the time i have put into the quest there so far, it's nothing amazing. the lands are empty of life,(you can literally walk from town to town and maybe encounter 1, maybe 2 packs of mobs ),  of all the quest i have done so far, they have all been fetch item quest and 1 escort quest, new items are all from older mods like Zzjay's wardrobe,  alot of lore unfriendly things popping up(modern foods, modern furniture, a hobbit hole style house and others) and the place is so damn bright, even in the middle of the night, with brightness at 0, i can still see around my char perfectly fine, only 2 places so far have been dark enough to use any form of light, and quest items you are sent for are usually laying around and prone to being knocked around by combat (so far, i've had 2 quest where the item was lost this way).

the mod needs alot of work still, so you really arnt missing anything.

As for the lore, the best two big quest mods I knew are Beyond Reach & Helgen Reborn, as far as I know.

The mod author of the former has recently released the spoiler of the background story of his mod,

so if you don't mind spoil your pleasure of guessing the lore behind the story

from the dialogue and the books in the mod quest, check it below:

Also two 'official' (from mod's author) trailers of Beyond Reach are as following:

Yeah, being shoehorned into being Archmage just to play it was a pretty stupid design decision. It locks the content behind a pretty huge obstacle, and besides that it limits the mod to a small subset of character types. The mod is hamstrung by this limitation. I can think of good reasona why one might choose to design a mod in such a way, but I can think of a lot more good reasons why it's stupid.

Is the landscape at least pretty? Maechen is originally from the Isles and I've only downloaded it to take him back home for some screenshots, but if it's not at least passable, I'll probably trash it. Of particular interest is Shimmerene, his hometown - is that in?

well... my comp isnt the best, but you can decide

3 random pics around the island. the middle pic was taken at midnight, in the open with brightness set to 0 ingame, there was no light anywhere near me either.

Holy hell that's bright.

I quite like Shimmerene, though. Thanks. Might give this a tour via coc just to snap what shots are to be snapped.

yea it bright, my enb doesnt help much there, as it usually makes things a bit more bright and vibrant, but even with it off it's like that.

I try to stay away from the Land Expansion Mods. I hate seeing Skyrim's assets being used over and over again in different mods. I'll check out this Alinor Mod but from what I've heard is that most of the Mod has been assembled from other Mods and Resources with there being Telvanni and Nordic architecture so hardly anything High Elf like. I'm looking more forward to Beyond Skyrim Bruma and Skywind where these guys are creating most of their own resources from scratch. I saw the Frostcrag Spire and Cloud Ruler Temple from Beyond Skyrim and couldn't help but feel extremely happy and proud of those guys. The Skywind Team are also extremely talented and organized, those armor and creature models they have produced are wonderful. Both teams have some superb landscape artists as well.

yea, alot of it has come from other places, i havnt seen any "new" content in that i hadnt seen before, specially things like the armor, part of it is from zzjays wardrobe, which i also have installed.

Wow, that does look bad. I'm not sure why if you are having an issue you would choose to ride it out and not ask me. Also, what's with all the negitivity?  Mods are supposed to be fun. Why so angry? If you see something wrong, why not tell me so I can try to help you or see if others have that issue. You may notice that none of the posted images by users on Nexus look like your shots, they look normal. Modding is supposed to be fun, everyone is intitled to their opinion and I respect that. I would like to help you get your game looking normal so you can enjoy it properly, if you'd like.
