Downloading Mods Directly off of this Website instead of using mediafire, 115

Should loverslab have a page for sharing, uploading and downloading mods (like skyrimnexus), instead of having to visit sites like mediafire, 4shared, 115, etc. for downloads?

hey I'm in my mid thirties let me enjoy the last few rays of sunshine before I descend into the twilight years of stained wife beaters' date=' sitting on my porch waving my cane, and generally making a crotchety nuisance of myself :D

So be it!

This would likely require more server space' date=' which in turn requires more money. Bring more money into it and egos will erupt. I would rather Loverslab stay like it is than risk turning it into The Nexus. That would be truly a terrible terrible turn of events. It's fine the way it is.

I voted for yes, but after seeing this post alone, my vote is now a no.

Loverslab is fine the way it is, I agree with that. I know I've only signed up a week ago, but I've come to love this place and it's community. I shudder at the thought of it becoming Nexus.

I don't understand why all of you say this. The site could look anyway it wanted to. It could look EXACTLY like Nexus and never be like Nexus. It isn't the site that determines if it's like Nexus, it's the ADMINISTRATORS. Nexus is F'ING Amazing but sucks at the same time because the Administrators are paranoid with everything and ban everyone for ANY reason.

This paranoia is the result of a guilty conscience when one acts against the own ideals of old. It begins with the proclamation of noobish outsiders as administrators of a grown system and ends will the sellout to sponsors that not just sell products but opinions as well.

I just thought of another way that would keep this website the same and not change it up too much and would still keep the costs down. Instead of adding a mod section, just add a tracking center like skyrimnexus that way users can save the location and armor in their favorites so they don't have to go looking for them again once they've found them.

Well, until something happens you can bookmark the page with your web browser. I don't know about IE but firefox allows you to organize your bookmarks in custom folders and you can label the bookmarked page so you know what is there.

I might be able to help. I have a WIP mod downloader software and uploader site. its very simple and I can provide the hosting resources without problems. I have several sites (& servers) that have been up for over 6 years so here today gone tomorrow is not a problem. It's the least I can do, FOC for LL members :) Just let me know.

Isn't it just a matter of host provider? I do know having built a few web apps on public and private host providers that there are limits and costs associated with the type of services you get. Add to that that LL is 'adult' oriented and you immediately have a constraint over which host providers you can go with.

I also feel at some point LL needs to evolve to a 'better' choice of web application technology. This is blogware and what is really needed next would be a higher order web application platform, along with potentially a host provider service that supports it.

All of that costs time & money, possibly more than what Ashal is covering now. So those voting yes, are you also willing to donate time and/or money to help support an evolved LL? When you move from a BB or forum based site to a higher order web app more members will need to step and and help out. Till that happens I'm fine with the way it is, and some of us have and are working on reducing the chaos, providing order. And as gregathit pointed out, it's simple enough to create bookmark folders and links to any MOD that interest you.

And no, I didn't vote because IMO the poll question wasn't broad enough to address the next evolution of LL.

Making a nexus like download site for LoversLab has actually been an idea I've flirted with in the past, and would very much like to do. As other's have pointed out though, there is very much so an issue of time and money.

The ads on the site now cover the monthly cost of running the site, but it leaves little left over for such a large expansion. Not to mention opening the site up to larger downloads via a download system would significantly increase costs. And I don't think the theoretical increase of traffic a download system would bring in would also bring in enough ad revenue to cover the significantly increased bandwidth usage. I could be wrong though, it would be a major gamble that would either waste tons of my time and absolutely destroy the site as it is now, or it could be a huge success and I'd be swimming in ad revenue, who knows.

Personally I think the better route is to improve what the site is rather than reinvent itself. My current goal is to purchase a vBulletin license ($250) to upgrade the forum software, and then better organize the forums overall.

It's an idea but it is going to cost. We would have to add extra restrictions in place as well since as a "Adult Content" lockout.

As for the monthly costs that would be easy to sort out, just create a premium membership.

It's doable without a doubt it's just getting it all in place as cheap as possible. I messed around with this type of design in the past for LL but never really finished it. Of course I was just a normal user back then too. :P

Like I said above, I am willing to help with hosting and the software I have developed so far. There is no issue with hosting LLL content either. I can develop it further. But if this is about just asking for money in some way for memberships etc or donations, I am sorry to have butt in (and completely ignored for offering to help so it doesnt really matter)

The idea itself is great but we'll have to compete with a site like the Nexus (and they gather alot of money from it i assume which will probably lead them to doing things to keep this site as small as possible)

Than you get the costs it's solvable with premium or donation and getting special statuses (like we have with contributers atm) but even than you'll need people willing and ABLE to donate!

Than with donations and all you will probably not get much more for any upgrades on the server itself like storage space which you are gonna need (it's a hosting site duh)

It would be possible if someone ELSE payed for it keeping the host at Ashal but the payments for it are left to someone else... although i don't know if that's perfectly possible or anything good (that someone must just turn on you...)

If I ever did go this route, as a webdeveloper I'm very much dead set on coding it myself rather than using somebody else's code. That way I'm familiar with where things breakdown, what's in the code, and just for the sake of doing it. Though I'd likely welcome somebodies design help, as I couldn't design a decent looking site if my life depended on it.

Hosting is also not remotely a problem at the moment. Though I'd like to move the site over to EC2 at some point and then just serve attachments/downloads on a separate download server, there is no good easy way to integrate this with mybb however, yet another reason I'm wanting to move everything over to vBulletin.

I am very much opposed to doing premium memberships, mainly because I don't like the idea of locking out features to none paying users. And donations are unreliable, not to mention my PayPal account was banned for accepting donations on a "pornographic site" against paypal's terms of service.

I've had this situation happen before on me. Another site I used to run was using a user's server, he vanished one day without warning taking the whole site with him. Site was down for months while we pieced together old backups and recreated missing chunks from scratch. By the time the site had gotten back up people had already moved onto to other similar sites and it was never the same.

Never again.

That's why i put it quite as last it's risky and might only turn out right if the person lives like next to you...

Premium memberships doesn't have to mean feature lockout. It could be just referred to as supporter or something. I'm sure we could think of something it gives you without affecting others even if it is just a title to say you support the site.

So that's what happened to the donate button.

Well, depending on the tech selected design can be based on predefined, pre-built templates and then modified or customized, none of which has to be done all at once. A gradual evolution to what looks and feels good.

No disrespect intended Ashal, but why vBulletin? Pay for use licensing? Still just forum-ware. I don't get it, with all of the 'true' open-source available. At the very least, with what members are doing now I'd go with a MediaWiki or similar, or even better Semantic MediaWiki.

actually vbullletin is pretty decent. None of the freeware forums save for discuz come close to vbulletin in ease of use' date=' security and manageability  for admins.

Pretty much this. Not to mention it's just a much more mature product than the others and as a result has a better plugin library

@Ashal, I'd skip the copyright removal BS they sell. It's not cheap otherwise as it is. I would also skip the vbseo plugin unless I had the extra cash. Simply because your search traffic will still come from google etc and there arent any competing sites so to speak. It attracts more spammers than it's worth. My 2 cents.

With everything closed today and being home alone all day (celebrated christmas yesterday with family, and roommates all gone for christmas today) I decided to go ahead and give it a shot to pass the time.

Purchased a license and I have it up and running on Amazon EC2 now. I'll likely be messing around with it and tweaking it heavily for the next month before I officially move LoversLab over to it however. Expect big changes coming soonish.
