CPU + motherboard combo's

I think time has come to upgrade my PC, i'd been putting it off for quite a while for the socket 1156 chips to come down in price (and none of the games i play really need more cpu) but instead they made a different pin one so to upgrade now i need a new motherboard.

Been looking at http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BU-013-AS&groupid=2833&catid=2836

but i'm not 100% sure on how to check the form factor of the motherboard i already have since it would be a bit of a pain to buy the damn thing to then need to go get another case.

Is there a way to check/measure?

Yes, actually. Motherboards and cases come in standardized sizes, to keep such confusion out.

The size names are as follows:

ATX Full size

ATX Mid size

Mini ATX

Micro ATX Mini

Mini ITX

I don't know if I left any out, but this should help you get the idea.

After some googling i've found that my HP elite 7100 MT is a Micro-ATX so the one i linked above wont fit as its a ATX :(

I would advise you to upgrade the case while you are at it. Even if the motherboard does fit. The front headers for the motherboard might be difficult or impossible to connect to the selected motherboard. There usually isn't any documentation on the wiring and unless you have lots of experience with these matters it can be very frustrating.

Upgrading can give you more flexibility on the case and even future upgradability. You can make sure you have enough space for all the graphic cards and even addon cards you might want. The cost of most standard gaming cases can be 100 dollars or less. Some up to 150. A good investment. Finally many of the cases sold have more cooling options as well which can help in the future. Bottom line, commercial built computers are designed around those components included in the machine.

Many ATX mobos have more features and capabilities than their smaller cousins. If you like small sizes it is a bit more work and some expense but you can get excellent cases that will fit your needs.

I brought this one http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BU-008-MS and installed yesterday and everything is working which is good.

I didn't realise i would have to re-install the OS (yes i had actually thought i could just swap them over and go) so i'm now waiting for 167 win 7 updates to install :(

Actually you could have used your old OS install and made it work with the new hardware. With Windows 7 all you have to do is boot it into "Safe Mode", by hitting the F8 key at boot up screen and then remove all hardware in Device Manager, reboot and let Windows 7 find new hardware, then register again with Microsoft. Sometime the registration has to be done by phone because they have to give you a different installation key.

I tried that but it didn't work so i ended up downloading a windows 7 pro ISO from microsoft and then using the license key that came with the PC to activate.

Kind of surprised it worked tbh

Ranger is very good motherbord bit low on sata+ubs 3 ports but it's workable.

The CPU is standard also very good but for OC it's little less its ok OC with medium cooling say a cooling block good for 4.6 ghz stable OC for water cooling stable 4.8 ghz. it's not as good as the ivy bridge 3770k or even 4770k for OC.

But the CPU excell in standard have 4ghz+ boost 4.4ghz.

I have 4790k and im very pleased with it 4 cores on 4ghz standard.

Edit: see you have bought gaming version also good MB eventually it comes down to Bios and ASUS BIOS is very good.

Asus MB have good bios with very good option for simple OC.

It's very good combo MB+CPU.
