Artistic Vision was the excuse they tried to pawn off on folks to explain the worst ending to a major video game in the last 5 years.  The fact that they resorted to using the "Artistic Vision" bullshit line sent a clear signal that they realized they fucked up the ending badly. 

 

Obviously, as HanPL correctly stated above, that went viral and they were mocked for such a weak ass explanation.  The fact that they made the Extended Cut ending DLC and gave it away free, was them backing down and desperately trying to save face.

Yeah i been reading about these excuses, but this is just crazy, i mean they build a universe, with lots of history and stuff, over the 5 years or so they keep feeding people about an epic ending, that your choices matter and...this is what they came up with.

 

Yep the DLC is basically a proof of them fucking up royally...i wonder how much success the next ME game will have after this.

A bit of an overstatement IMO. Perhaps video games as whole are not art, but some of what they are composed of is definitely art.

 

Writing ? Yes.

Acting \ Voice acting ? Yup.

Design (Whether CG or not) ? Oh, yes.

Soundtrack ? GOD YES!

 

And this is why I think video games may be art indeed, though, perhaps not entirely.

So recently Mac Walters, lead writer of ME3, said that the ending was fine and only a "vocal minority" had a problem with it.

I already knew he was a hack, but it looks like he's an idiot too. Oh well, at least he won't do any more harm....

And if the mass relays can wipe the whole nebulas by being destroyed why where the reapers needed to begin with...they could have just wiped the whole place by shooting the relays lol...wtf.

The first one pretty much fucks the Reapers' and Mr. Starchild's entire line of thinking. Although I can reason why they don't shoot the Relays, they need them to travel as well and possibly want to leave nebulas habitable. Also welcome to the vocal "minority".

Yeah true but what for would they need to travel, i mean they are synthetic beings created by the starchild, he could have just used them to wipe the place in a matter of seconds by destryoing the relays and then create new ones and sent them to other places...if you consider that the space is basically endless with milions of other planets and possible life on them...i know what you mean but...uhh.

 

I cant possibly see how ME4, or whatever they going to call it, can be taken seriously after experiencing this.

No, no, no, NO!!!! 

 

I will repeat: "Video games are NOT art and never will be.  They are a commodity." 

 

They were created FIRST and FOREMOST to MAKE MONEY.  End of line.  While "art" may indeed make money, that is NOT why it is created.  Art is also based on a "limited" nature.

 

Slapping an "art" label on crap doesn't make it so.  Stop and think about what it really is.  A mass produced, non unique (meaning all exactly alike) product.  If you are going to label everything as art, then so is me taking a dump on a paper plate.

 

Another support to the "commodity" label is bioware's actions, not their words mind you, their actions.  They "revised" the commodity due to public demand.  If it truly "was" art then they would not have cared what people thought, let alone revised their "work".

 

 

None of this is saying that individual components of the game (or the whole thing) can't be done tastefully or even superbly.  One could even say the components (or whole thing) was so well done as to almost "be" a work of art.  This doesn't imply that it actually is art, unless you go with dumbed down version that EVERYTHING is art.....which of course means that nothing is.  You no doubt recognize that is similar to the old "special" argument that if everyone is special....then no one truly is. 

 

Bottom line, trying to use the "art" label and hide behind it was as F'd up as the ending of the game was..........which kind of makes sense now that I reflect on it.  After all, stupid is as stupid does.  Guess bioware has just gone stupid........

 

 

 

NOTE:  I am not trying to get all picky with you, but I get really annoyed when folks try to dumb down definitions of words by using them on things which they were never intended to apply to.  It is silly and quite tacky.  Often it is used to insult (intended or not) and other times it is merely an attempt to deflect criticism.

Well this mod shouls how bad those triple AAA tile that should be concluding chapter that explain everything and leave everyone happy is that players have to make their own ending since devs didn't thought that 90% would like to see happy ending of Commander Shepard journey.

I'm a very emotional person, and get very attached to characters I create and play.

I would've loved a happy ending, but that isn't even my main problem. My main problem is the ending is just *stupid*.

 

It contradicts the entire plot and themes of all 3 games, it railroads my decisions and insults my intelligence.

 

And hell, one of the reasons I enjoyed Mass Effect 2 was because it went beyond the usual tired robot apocalypse cliche by making the Geth balanced characters who don't want to murder all living things. And hell, ME3 did the same thing... then the ending goes "Yeah all robots want to murder all living things, PSYCHE!".

And I get what they were going for, that the Reapers had their own reasons, shades of grey and all that. But it doesn't work. They didn't have the ability to pull it off and the Reapers as written do not work as grey villains.

They may have if they had actually bothered to give Reapers nuance from the beginning, but they didn't. Sovereign and Harbinger blustered constantly about the inferiority and doom of organics. Yet in the end we're supposed to accept "Oh the Reapers think they're helping you by bombing your from orbit, raping your minds and putting you in death camps."
