- Why is it every time I recruit companions they never seem to be around when I need them. They all seem to mysteriously disappear and if they are there they seem to getting in my way leading to me accidental attacking them.

 

- Farwil I swear if this mission is over I am killing you. Why in Talos's name are you going inside an Oblivion gate with very little training and a really crappy armour and then proceed to throw yourself at the enemy or fall in the lava. It would be so bad if you would actually stay behind me but noo you have to charge ahead. Look I need to finish this mission if you want to get yourself and your friends killed choose another way and leave me out of it.

-Elder Scrolls games' AI is notorious for being broken. Even the best coder could not fix that, due to limitations in the CS\CK.

 

-Use the console to heal the NPC. If that fails (due to negligence or instant-killing lava), set him to be essential. If that somehow also fails, set him to be essential, move him outside the gate and disable his AI. If for whatever reason that also fails, use the console to manually advance the quest stages while the NPC still hasn't entered the gate.

I have several more suggestions in case the above all somehow magically fail.

 

Seriously, you're playing a TES game; if something frustrates you, bypass it. If something angers or offends you, mod it out.

And this is apparently Oblivion, which has THE WORST companion AI ever created. Sure, it's far from perfect in Skyrim, but it IS drastically improved.

Well there is the mad companionship mod here on LL that allows you to set people/followers to followers set them to essential a spell that allows you to warp lost followers to you and many other options as well.

Skyrim used to feel huge, now I'm disappointed when I think "Oh I'm already there" when I run from Solitude to Riften via Markarth and Whiterun. I swear it has shrunken!

Not happening. It's bugged beyond reason and you'll be lucky if you ever manage to finish it. Patches or bug fixes wont work, You've been warned!

Oblivion is probably less bugged than Skyrim you know...

For the companion problem... that originally sucks beyond what words can measure. Even the CM mod sucks, so I got Mad Companionship Spells

Never looked back after that
