Replacement graphics card for Skyrim?

Meh,

I'm a huge fan of Nvidia currently. I think their support and drivers are better overall than AMD. (Completely personal opinion, please do not mistake this for me stating it as a fact)

That being said, for the record Physx works fine on AMD cards as well, less performance because the engine is completely run off the CPU, but still works for the AMD/ATI folks.

Overall though, I hate the current state of affairs between hardware manufacturers and how they 'sponsor' different games. Really annoying crap for us end users to deal with.

My personal opinion, do some really through research, target the graphics card to what game your most likely gonna play the most or what Game Dev your gonna buy games from the most. Check and see which company sponsors them and you'll most likely want to get that company's hardware as well because it will have the most optimization for that game dev/game.

I have another experience with nVidia cards and drivers (expecially drivers in fact) on Ubuntu systems. Tried to upgrade thoses drivers (nVidia Quadro) and ... instakill of xOrg. Tried this 3 times. And i dislike to be obliged to reinstall from sczatch a machine because i am unable to reinstall the xOrg module or downgrade the video driver ... maybe it's the Ubuntu distribution who was the problem but ... (Mageia seems more stable on the same machine) Intel or AMD graphic cards don't have this problems.

Nvidia + Ubuntu = Bad memories for me *shudders*

Installing those 3rd party binary drivers has toasted at least 1 mobo in the past for me.

I make it a rule nowadays for my linux systems to not have any separate graphics on them, it's too much of a hassle. On-board intel or AMD systems are enough for those installs.

And If I'm using linux, I sure as hell am not gaming so no point in needing to spend the extra money on useless hardware anyways.

Okay, I personally had bad experience with ATI cards including the sapphire x3870's I think they were called, also the 2900 and the 6790 (not sure on the numbers) and I felt that AMD catalyst center + drivers was getting a little bloatware.

BUT I have had friends who love ati.

I am still deciding on my future upgrade still going to wait a couple of weeks at least, my motherboard unfortunately is crossfire only so if I want to go the dual cards way I would go 2*270x

IF I stick with nvidia, I don't really do brand loyalty it all depends on the hardware and software, I hope to get the new 760ti or whatever they will be calling the new maxwell card.

The older ATI/AMD cards you mentioned were inferior back then, compared to nVidia's 9400/9600/9800 lineup, but then AMD came up with the HD4000s, which were a huge improvement. I also hated the older Catalyst drivers, which required .Net stuff to be installed but also quite slow that I then preferred the straightforward GeForce drivers until I bought the budget HD4670 card and this changed my opinion on AMD.

Earlier I mistakenly said that I had a dislike for hardware and game reviewers, but not all of them as I sometimes read stuff from Hardware Secrets and Techpowerup, so for this time they reviewed one of those 290X monster cards:

Well my current card started to artifact, I thought it would last a couple of weeks but it did not so I ordered the following.

MSI 290x.

So lets see how it works.

My system is well setup, I have a corsair 650w psu to top it all off.

Sounds interesting, my main pc is in parts waiting for the new card to arrive, giving it a semi good cleaning while it is all open to the world.
