Nexus mods HACKED?

Recommended Posts

I use Nexus mods like most, if not all of you on this site. I go to a Nexus mod page, ANY page and click on ANY link on that page and I get the dreaded "Are you a Robot?" page, EVERY SINGLE TIME!!! Nexus modding has been COMPLETELY HACKED and CORRUPTED. I'm not downloading a single mod from them until it is fixed!!!

I don't get this.  But yeah, instead of rationally asking people if they experience the same thing, of course the first respont is: WAAAAAH! 🤔

Maybe you displayed robot like behaviour on Nexus in the past... :D

Exactly how does a human being duplicate robot behavior? I'm not sure how to do that, I just do what I do. AI is all about robot's duplicating human stuff, how's that workin' for ya?

It is likely an issue with it recognizing your browser. Brave, for example, can throw up false positives. Try Google Chrome of Microsoft Edge.

I'm on Firefox and not once have I been asked if I'm a robot or not. And I've downloaded something just now.

Also, for the record, just because a site is asking you specifically if you're a robot or not multiple times, doesn't mean the site is hacked. If Nexus got hacked, it'd be known by now.

Do you use a VPN? It can cause that.

And just for the record I am not having any problems with Nexus. I've downloaded 3 mods today.

Sometimes it is enough that you're protecting yourself to cause servers to freak out like this. One of the easiest ways I've found recently (<1 year) is to use a user-agent spoofer - you'll be banned from all CloudFlare servers immediately. VPNs, proxies and various.... lets say onion shaped networks being another thing that might look funny from the other end.

The line between a well made web spider and a human is so thin these days it's easy to classify a visitor incorrectly. Could also be you have some browser plugin that's "making things convenient for you", sniffing links beforehand or downloading all images somewhere. If you're using a shared exit node to the internet maybe someone else just ran an attack from the same IP or the IP was already on the blacklist.

it's vpn or adblockers.

Could be. Falls in the same category as above: protecting yourself sometimes blocks the things that want to know what you are.

It's your browser but sure they were COMPROMISED and HACKED

While a bot check can be annoying I'd say it's highly unlikely a hacker would add this when they could just do what they always do to the Nexus which is to pop a few big accounts and swap our their dll-containing mods with malware. This happens maybe once a year or so. Same goes for Nexus ad campaigns - we get a "Sorry" message every year or so where they say their ad service pushed out scams or malware links.

Q: So Nexus is shit then, right?

A: No more than anyone else really. Assume every site you visit wants to scam or hack you. Assume every site was partially coded by an intern writing their first web application. The stats speak for them selves.

Q: How do you sleep at night?

A: For starters, I have JavaScript blocked in its entirety, unless specifically allowed by me. This is layer 1 of 20+.
