Ok, I'm going to say my piece and then I intend to not continue to fan the flames of this argument. There is legitimate concern for the id thing. As Orlin points out, "What's the worst that can happen? We throw you a birthday party?" That actually is not entirely the case. While it may be true that the only piece of information they are asking for on the id is the dob, they are also asking for your username and user id. Ok, so what? Well I'm sure many of us use our usernames across many many sites and different platforms. Some may use the same username for virtually everything on the internet. We are being told and told again that the data gets deleted afterward but we don't have anything to go on other than 'word of mouth' in that regard. Orlin, it would potentially go a long way to assuage peoples' fear if you posted the manual for the bot api that clearly shows how the bot works on the backend and what happens to the data the moment someone hits the upload button with their id picture. If the data in some form or fashion continues to persist in some location or another then that data can get leaked on the darknet and that data will show all the users usernames and user ids that are affiliated with a porn site/discord. Now, what the big deal of that? Well let's say you want to get a job or you already have a great job. What do you think might happen to you if someone finds out that a member of their company that goes by a certain username on the internet is also affiliated with a particular adult website/discord or any adult website/discord? 

 

Yes, you could write this all off as conspiracy and just talking out of my ass however it actually has happened. The reality is that we live in an age where personal security and privacy on the internet is only getting worse and not better. If you want to join a server that asks for information like what AgeGate (their discord's bot) wants from you then that is your prerogative. However, just as a psa to everyone, please, please, please stop and really, really think about what information your willing to share and put out there on the internet and how or where it may end up beyond your intentions.

Just my own 2cents, this is an adult site for hosting adult mods, the fact you're advertising the mod here means you're aware of that so I don't really understand the point of keeping the mod from children. You've already done your job of posting an adult mod in an adult space. You're obviously free to choose where you want to host your mods, but by hosting them solely to Discord you only reduce the total amount of people that would have downloaded otherwise. I can understand choosing to keep support to your server for your own convenience, but from a user standpoint(in my opinion) it would be better to host on other platforms for those of us that don't want to join Discord servers just to use the mod, it's inconvenient and not everyone wishes to engage with Discord communities.

It should be unusual. It's a terrible practice and puts a ton of legal liability on the people that run the server. Under normal circumstances, if a minor joins your NSFW server and talks on your NSFW channel, that is not your liability, it's Discord's. Discord by default does not let minors join NSFW server or channels. If they're able to join, then they lied about their age, and a simple report is all that's needed to get them kicked off the platform.

But by taking on the responsibility of vetting the age of members yourself, you are effectively assuming legal liability for exposing minors to pornography, since you are no longer relying on Discord's verification measures and taking it into your own hands (despite being entirely unqualified to do so).

To put it in another perspective:
Let's say you're hosting a party at a casino. You could host the party in the main lobby where qualified staff will verify the age of everyone ordering alcohol, but you instead opt to move the party to a private room and vet attendees yourself. Now say someone underage with a fake ID shows up. If you were in the lobby, the casino would assume liability (or more likely, they'd detect it's fake since they're trained and equipped to authenticate IDs); but since you took matters into your own hands, you are now liable for serving alcohol to a minor.

IDs in the form mentioned are very easy to fake and do little to deter minors. The admins already know this, hence the announcement they made asking people to report suspected minors. It's nothing but security theater, at the expense of people's online safety, privacy, and anonymity. It's a gold mine for anyone looking to destroy your life.

A talented furry artist and long friend of mine recently became a victim of doxxing. He was constantly harassed through mail, threats, and hoax 911 calls sending cops to his door; he had to move to another state and get rid of his dog since he couldn't find a renter that allowed pets. Thankfully, he isn't close with his family anymore, or else they would've been victims as well. It's not a laughing matter, and it doesn't matter how little or inconsequential the information you think you're sending is.

By following the verification instructions, you're giving out (at minimum):

• Your full birthdate
• The state you live in (very easy to determine via the exposed borders, which they require)
  [These two alone are massively beneficial to anyone trying to profile you]
• Your handwriting
• The kind of phone you used to take the picture
• Any metadata stored in the image (which can straight up give pin-point coordinates to where you took the photo)
• Any sensitive info you didn't think or aren't allowed to cross out (certain codes written in tiny text unique to your ID, watermarks, etc)
• Anything visible within the reflective surface of the card itself, or anything else framed in your image
• You are then tying all of this information to your Discord account, which you are using to join a server hosting controversial pornography. All it takes from this point is a bad actor to do a little more research and stalking of you to link your Discord account with another account, eventually leading to your real life identity and ruining your life.
• Not to mention, by joining their Palhub server, you're also giving them your IP address (and Steam account and probably lots of other things I missed) on top of it all. Like, holy fuck, this is just an absolute goldmine for doxxing and blackmailing.

 

In essence, the current age verification requirements not only fail to enhance security but also expose users to unnecessary risks. Discord should be urged to strengthen its own age verification mechanisms, and server owners should refrain from adopting legally-grey practices that compromise the safety and privacy of their community members, especially when they are not qualified or properly equipped to safely and securely handle such sensitive information.

For what it's worth I did some sleuthing to figure out where the discord age gate bot comes from. It is made by a group called Fallen's Workshop. It is pretty clear reading their terms and conditions that their company does have access to any data the bot collects and that that data is stored with them. I will post this here for other folks information and reading pleasure:

EDIT: Ok let me clarify and change a few things here. I also querried the the bot for privacy information. They claim that no data is stored and shared in direct messages but it does confirm that the data is sent to a private group of users for review. Certainly those users would still be able to download the files I would imagine. In any case, this is what it says:

Age Gate was made to help servers verify it's members whiles ensuring privacy and safety of the member when sending personal identification in order to get verified.

Age Gate uses DM's in order to receive submissions, ensuring your ID isn't saved or seen by anyone within the server that isn't there to check submissions and remove any risk of ID's being saved without knowledge.

After submitting your ID for verification, an image link is then embeded into a message and sent to a private channel for the staff of the server to check to either approve or deny your submission.

Once approved or denied, the status will update within the DM's of the bot and if approved, the verified role will automaticaly be add and your submission delete from the server, leaving only a log of approved or denied with the member Username and Discord UserID (your image is not logged)
What The Bot See:
In order for Age Gate to perform, we use only an image link to the photo from within the DM, the members UserID (this can be found by right click on your profile and clicking "Copy Users ID"), and commands ran by everyone with access to the bot."
What We Save From Members:
For members, we wish to ensure the most safety, confidence, and privacy whiles using this system so we do not save anything sent from the user at any point.

For the function of the bot we do however save your UserID, the Server verified in and the date you were verified.
If you have not ran any commands or send a submission you will not have been seen by the bot at all.

The UserID is used for adding/removing roles, sending updates on your submission, and for auto-role on join in servers that also use this bot. (this will check on join if you have been verified before and add the role necessary so you do not need to verify again if done once before).
The server and date of verification is saved as a precausion to link back to the user verifying you in case of any reports of users using fake ID's.
What We Save From Servers:
For servers owners, we need a little more from you.

For the bot to perform and keep running we save all infomation relating to the the setup of AgeGate (can be seen by using /configuration), Verification/Status Message Content / Image URL (the messages sent when a Member runs /Verify), Verified Role ID, Server ID, Server Owner ID, Global verification status.

These are used purely for the core function of this bot and can be removed by joining the The Workshop and requesting your servers infomation be removed or reset.
(May only be requested by the owner of the server. If the bot is removed from the server and a request is not made, all data saved will be put into holding for 1 month before permanently deleting.)

Honestly would not surprise me if Orlin didn't care too much that there was a sort DOB checker for his discord but because so many people here are pushing back (and effectively talking shit about it) he's forced himself to defend it. And who's fault is that for including the stupid dubious I.D check?  And now your saying, "If you report us,  we'll never make this mod were planning on making,  so don't tell discord about our little suspicious I.D check,  alright?"

 

If someone reports it and discord shuts you down,  that's on discord and you.  Maybe its better off if this mod never happens,  it doesn't seem like your getting along well with the community anyways...

 

Maybe take a break from it all,  does it sound like were glowing with gratefulness at your free work to come?  This mod and the emotions that surround it isn't good for anyone at this point.

Might I recommend discord's default verification system.

Whatever way you want to justify it to yourself, not using it puts your ass on the line for legal repercussions.
