To be honest you don't need any ultra super rig (unless you have money for that :P )

to run Skyrim on ultra with mods.

I bought this rig like 2 weeks ago.

And it handle all new games on ultra without any problems.

Skyrim keeps fps 60+ on ultra with mods (well after patch 1.2 fps can drop from 60 to 10 in caves >.> ) but on patch 1.1 everything was running smooth )

Nice setup han ^^ and i do agree with mushkin their a damn good deal for their price i've used them in a number of setups due to gskil and geil being so damn hard to get here in belgium (the snipers i'm going to order are going to set me back a fair bit just due to the fact i have to import them from the netherlands)

For ocz psu's just watch which one you get i had a couple break on me tho surprisingly the antec series i got with my 2nd case is still outliving my gamexstream from ocz (broke down in under a year sadly :()

Posted

Ocz and Corsair PSU's are made by the same company(seasonic), so if you prefer one, but can't find it and are looking warranty/part wise or replacement wise on something just keep that in mind.

Posted

@ mashi 99% of them are indeed except the Gold 1200 watt series by corsair those are custom built by another company forgot which one.

I personally have to say that the quality of the gold 1200w one is superb (using that one to power my main pc)

The ones by seasonic you have to watch out that you get the right one since the advertised watts aren't allways what it's actually putting out the series below 600w are notorious for this but keep an eye out (ie check reviews) for any below 800w

Posted

True enough, it's probably flex who does some of antec and enermax's lower end PSU's, just a guess without tearing one a part(or being unlazy and looking at a review or three for the guts of one. :) ). In another lifetime I would have loved to dick around with this stuff, now it's back to passing hobby time.

And to be honest, seasonic isn't really all that bad. Though I'd rather go with a OCZ or Corsair branded version since they're doing a pretty decent job of covering cross product failures of their PSU's, and sealed coolers when it comes to component death. I mentioned in the rant thread that OCZ is covering my videocard, which was still in warranty. I already got the check from them for $300 which was the original price I paid for the card, and evga has received and processed my RMA and has shipped a replacement card.

The real problem of seasonic is that they almost always have a weak 5v rail, but they're usually within 2.2%.

Posted

I talked to a guy over at evga and he got me one hell of a deal on the evga sr-2 psu. I'm going to use that in my new rig which also frees up an extra psu I have ordered alreay to be used in my "spare parts" project. :D

Posted

Damn your lucky ryan and idd mashi seasonic is known for that issue it's why my gamexstream blew to smithereens (30amps on the line while they post 40is doable yeh not :P)

Never had issues with the 600w and up from antec tho their a safe bet if ya don't want to go for the high end customs of OCZ (altho their worth their money it's pointless if your not going to use them to full)

I've decided that I'm done with AMD chips and their stinking video cards.

I'm building an intel chip based board this time around and going with a GEforce video card.

I've had nothing but issues and being stuck behind the curve when buying stupid ATI Radeon Videocards.

I've had it up to HERE!!!

I'll be damned if I spent almost 250.00 on a darn card that has a fricken GB of memory and 16 pipes and 950mhz clock speed and I can't even run Oblivion on Medium!!!! And th stupid chip is no help....2.2ghz dual core AMD GARBAGE!

ALL I WANNA FRICKEN DO IS PLAY DAMNED OBLIVION!!!

NOT CRYSIS!

NOT GTA4!!

NOT SKYRIM!!

NOT JOHN MADDEN 2013!!

JUST FRICKEN OBLIVION!!!!

It sounds like the video card wasn't your problem. If it had a low framerate it could have been because of your CPU, though a dual core should still run it (I could run it with a Pentium 4, though it crashed a lot). That $250 card you had sounds like it is much better than my card (HD4850) and I can run it at full settings. I don't know why you had problems though your rig sounds pretty decent, unless your card was dying or bottle necking the CPU somehow.

Personally I have had more problems with Nvidia than ATI but that's just my personal experience. I wouldn't know about their processor chips but Intel makes better CPU chips than them anyway so why bother. Sure it's cheaper but in the long run the Intel chips will make you happier. :)

Posted

Intel it is then.

I can't help but wonder what's so wrong with my Oblivion install.

If your hardware is worse than mine and you can run everything on a pentium-4 then something is fundamentally wrong with my Oblivion install I guess.

I don't understand why a 2.2ghz dual-core isn't enough when the game specs ask for way less than that.

FMoL...I'm gonna backup my data folder and reinstall the whole crap tonight to the alternate folder. I tried all weekend to get it working right to no avail.

:@:(

Posted

Well like I said, it ran on the P4, but it crashed a lot, even without mods. I have an i5 2500K now though, no more crashing.

BTW my card only has a clock speed of 680 Mhz and it runs the game at full so your card being at 950 should destroy it.

Posted

Man, that tears it. There MUST be something wrong with my install!!!

That's the only POSSIBLE answer!!!

I'm going to try a reinstall to an alternate location/directory and copy over my Data folder to the new installation and see if that works.

And once again....lol Ati. 4 years of that crap made me realize the hell I was going through after going green. You either pay the premium rip off tax and get Nvidia but at the same time get a piece of mind or go cheap and get Ati, all the while praying you dont BSOD on fecking youtube. I dont think southern islands is gonna change anything with regards to Ati's wonky card issues. If you've been using Ati for years and havent had any issues then good for you, you're one of the lucky ones. But there are enough horror stories on the web with Ati cards for me not to add my own.

You could try downgrading your GPU driver firmware and see if it helps. Ati's drivers are known to be less and less compatible with older games with each new release. Of course that puts you in a rock and a hard place; Downgrade driver for better Oblivion but lose Skyrim performance or stick with current driver and no Oblivianz for yuu.

Wow. To add insult to injury you even went with AMD for your cpu.....its like you hate money or something.

To be honest, I think you are over-dramatising the situation here. You will get BSODs on nVidia and ATI regardless of what you think. I have done both nVidia and ATI rigs and I can never say that one is completely PERFECT. From my work desk, I can actually say that both ATI and nVidia are equal in terms of defects. But yours is probably one out of the millions sold so that's probably within tolerance.

If you feel you're happy with what you have, go for it. But don't over-dramatise shit. This is the big reason why I hate posts like this.

I agree, ATI is fine, and so is Nvidia. It's just a matter of preference I guess. Personally I have never had an ATI card die on me while a Nvidia card has. Also I have generally gotten better performance from my ATI cards then I did from Nvidias. This probably changes from computer to computer though and in no way means the company is putting out a shitty product.

Keep burning your money away then, fuck do I care. 2 Ati cards back to back have sullied my view on AMD. I never said Nvidia was clean in all this but in the last year you would be a naive person to not see that AMD has been slow when it comes to making sure their drivers are up to scratch with new games. Yes we all remember the whole Nvidia drivers frying GPUs in the past thing so they also have their own skeletons in the closet.

I try to keep giving Ati the benefit of doubt but time and time they come up short more often then Nvidia. Things may change in the future and Southrn Isld may mark a turning point for Ati but IMO in the current climate its better to go green till things pick up for AMD as a whole.

The worse thing about Ati is that pound for pound they usually have the better GPUs when you compare price and performance but whats the point if you end up with backward ass drivers.

Btw the BSOD of death on youtube thing wasnt me being fecking over dramatic it was what was actually happening to me after a driver upgrade with my old GPU.

@ Jerbsinator, your post is probably the only post that pretty logic.

@ beck11, your post however is exactly why choice is there and the tone is perhaps why I refuse to help people like you. Drivers being slow and backwards? Then please explain all of the hotfixes that ATI/AMD has been putting out to the public to test before including them in the driver suites? Overall, I do think nVidia does have a better track record for drivers but that doesn't mean AMD is developing backward ass drivers as they are trying.

Overall, you are right to vent and move to others. But I do take offence when I'm targeted for putting forth my opinion.

Agree.

My gpu_history: ;)

NVIDIA : 5200 - 6800 - GTX470

Ati/AMD : 9200 - HD4670 - HD5850 - HD6950.

AMD or Nvidia,it's just a matter of taste

Posted

I think my GPU history outranks most people here:

nVidia: Geforce 3 Ti 200, Geforce 4 Ti 4200, 6800GT, 8800GTX, GTX280, GTX570

ATI: Radeon 8500, Radeon 9800Pro, Radeon X800 Pro, Radeon HD 4850, Radeon HD 5770, Radeon HD 6850, Radeon HD 6990

And the thing is that both ATI and nVidia are produced at the same TSMC fab labs so any problems related to the manufacturing rather than the graphic guys themselves.

Are we talking about damn, I can remember my first gup... it was a Voodoo card, who the hell made those way back in the day? Then I went in the Military so I too a bit of a break, on to a 6800 GS, 7200 GT, 8600 GT, 8800 GTX (2), 9600 GT (3), 9800 GTX (2), 9800 GTX+ (2), GTX 280 (2), GTX 480 (2) and leads me to the currently to the 2 GTX 590 classifieds. There was 1 ATi card in there between the 6800 and the 7200 but I installed it fired up the system and sparks flew then the card burned out my pci slot. That was the last ATi card I have bought. Not saying ATi is omg terribad or anything, I'm just one of those people that if I have a bad experience I don't ever do the same thing again.

on a side note:

Spare parts system is up and running..

Tbf, you targeted(apparently, replying to someone who quoted your post is called "targeting" now) me first with "holier than thou" righteousness. Because you cant except that someone may have a differing opinion/experience to yours, you come all passive aggressive and then turn it back on me when I try to explain myself, good show. I still dont know what in my original post was actually so "over dramatic" for you but w/e.

My issues with Ati are my own and something I have had to deal with for 4 years as I said. That I think entitles me to some degree of leeway if I did go abit overboard(assuming I did in the first place) in my assessment of Ati. And like I said before, I think they make solid cards, maybe even better that Nvidia in most cases but all thats useless if your driver updates are slow and glitchy. And there are alot of people who have had Ati and have never had a problem and I except that, although calling them "lucky" probably wasnt too clever but that dosent somehow make my experiences with them any less valid or wrong.

Anyway this rubbish has gone on long enough, Im not gonna change my stance with Ati's drivers at the present moment and you seem content to paint a black and white picture over this issue and sit the fence. Lets agree to disagree and move on.

Oh and Im deeply disappointed that you wont be helping me out from now on. Dont know how Im gonna get through the day now with this bombshell. When I read those lines I felt my knees go weak and the weight of the world come crashing down on me as I was left to ponder the idea that I am to navigate the ever lasting days on my own till my demise. Hows that for over dramatic:P

meh, no reason for people to get all huffy puffy over gpu's. I personally like nvidia gpu's over ATi. I also prefer EVGA nvidia based cards. I don't however prefer the price tags on them, LOL. I will say this, I'm gonna wait until nvidia launches their new cards in 2012 to set my mind but I have to say the ATi 7970 I think is the one just reviewed on OCF looks pretty fuckin sweet. I might actually give ATi a chance in 2012 depending on what nvidia comes out with.

Posted

Well, personally speaking I favor Nvidia over ATI due to the fact that ati's drivers were abysmal with some of the strategy games I play (MTW2, Empire, and so on). I made the switch from ati who I felt gave you more bang for you buck solely based on being able to best run the games I played. So far since I made that switch I have closely reviewed each and every new card I buy (I NEVER buy the newest card preferring to let someone else be a beta tester) and have not seen enough evidence to make me switch.

The same is true with AMD vs Intel. I was a HUGE AMD fan (who doesn't love an underdog) when they were kicking intel's butt. As it came time to build a new system I found that intel was a faster chip and switched. Years later this still is true according to the research that I have done.

All of comes down to personal experience in the end and rather than taking one persons view it is wise to review several as this will give you a better and more informed basis to make your decision.

One thing I seem to constantly change brands on is RAM. I used to favor Mushkin, but now I just can't make up my mind on what the best value for the money is :)
