Ewura Posted September 9, 2023 Posted September 9, 2023 (edited) So the 256 plugin limit is for ESP only. When I hover over the number that shows my active plugins, it shows me 176 ESMs + ESPs and 81 ESLs. Together that makes it 257. At 257 my game starts as normal. However if I add one more mod (258), the game crashes on launch. What about ESLs am I missing? Shouldn't it work? Edit: grammar Edited September 9, 2023 by Ewura grammar
FauxFurry Posted September 9, 2023 Posted September 9, 2023 All ESL and Esp-Fe are occupying a single virtual slot so it makes no difference whether or not the additional mods are all ESL/Esp-Fe, you are over the mod limit now. A few esp will need to be removed or converted to get under that limit again.

"But, there's a limit on the total number of archives (BA2s) that can be loaded; it's somewhere in the neighborhood of 512." Source
Tlam99 Posted September 9, 2023 Posted September 9, 2023 Slots are counted in HEX. Like A0 etc.etc. FE equals slot 254. This slot contains all ESP FE (esl flagged) mods. So your max slots available for regular esp, esm isup to FD, FF - 2 slots = regular 253 esp, esm incl. DLC's. FF slot is reserved for enginge created references and FE for the table of all the esl flagged esp's.

The limit of BSA loaded via engine preloader table is 200 characters lengh in total for all BSA names. One can load as many BSA as you want, as soon it's bound to an esp. Like mymod.esp, BSA is then mymod.bsa. Edited September 9, 2023 by Tlam99

I don't understand how can someone have 1k+ ELSs and 240 ESPs. If I go above the 257 (ESMs, ESPs and ESLs combined, see first post), my game won't launch. I can't see what's the problem here. Can someone explain (in a very simple terms)?

Because loot ignores the fe table. FE table has 4096 slots for esl flagged esp. ALL THE ESP FE ARE LOCATED IN THIS SLOT! Slot FE, thats the reason the esp flagged esl are name esp FE. esl is NOT esp FE ! BTW, you posted under skyrim. Only SE, not LE, has the esp fe feature. Edited September 9, 2023 by Tlam99

Because, in the example given, 240 esps is less than 254 eps. The number of esls is irrelevant as it is essentially always 1 (all the esls together only take one 'slot'). With your OP are you sure it is the hike from 257 to 258 which is causing the problem and not the actual mod you are installing? In other words, have you tried installing different mods? This is the LE section BTW.

ANY mod I try to activate above 258 makes the game crash.
Ewura Posted September 9, 2023 Author Posted September 9, 2023 I'm using Skyrim VR, with SE mods. One guy on a discord told me: "Skyrimvr can’t read esl properly. So you have a total of 256 plug-in. As far as I know esl can’t be loaded in properly. ESP flagged as esl can be loaded in but will count towards the plug-in limit." I guess there is no way around this then.
bnub345 Posted September 9, 2023 Posted September 9, 2023 Correct, VR doesn't benefit from esl plugins, they just get loaded normally. Your only option is to merge plugins until you are under the limit.
