Yeah the Skyrim map sucks badly. I always get lost because i don't see any streets on the map. Well maybe that was the intention in the first place though... If not they'd just have made a map instead of that...

Well I would agree on not liking the "in city" map as well but for the general map....I LOVE IT!!!!

In my opinion it feels like I am playing a modern game as opposed to an old school tabletop pen & paper one. :)

I don't really mind the new map, but sometimes I just can't figure out where the hell to go and wish I could zoom in just a bit more. I don't know why they even bothered to let you zoom in the first place when it's such a small amount...

I would agree totally with the zoom bit. As to the where to go....it can be damn frustrating as I always seem to be on the wrong side of the mountain from the path :(

The map is fairly useless when it comes to navigating when it comes to finding small details like passes in the mountains and roads... Also, a "paper-style" map would feel more immersive, after all. Although one has to agree that the map in Skyrim LOOKS good.

Kind of the difference between looking at a low-rez version of Google Map's satellite view or at the map-only version instead. Satellite view looks prettier but gives you less useful information. That's got to be true for Skyrim too, except everything is covered in bloody snow!

Skyrim's map fails a giving you the most basic things a map should have.

- Roads

- Passable

- Topology, apart from the highest peak - That's the crazy part. It's a 3D map and we can even see the *huge freaktastic cliff* that's right in your path.

All of this could be forgiven if it was in the name of better immersion - but afaik the Dovakhim Spy Satellite program is still several hundred years from launch. Dragonborn or not our hero would have to navigate using good old paper maps, same as everyone. In fact the paper maps used as props in the game are arguably more useful than the actual map.

The two reasons that I thought of why Beth made the maps the way they are are 1. Consoles demand pretty graphics. 2. The map would auto-update with added areas.

My proposed solution I mentioned over at Nexus was to fix the camera angle at 270 degrees for a directly down looking view then put in a few filters to make it all look like parchment and you're done.

I rather like the default Skyrim map, personally. It gives you enough information to plan a route, but not so much that you can't get lost, or end up somewhere unexpected.

It's the local maps that irritate me. They look like the belong on a Pip-Boy and have the same annoying tendancy to overlay areas upon one another so all you get is a grey fuzz.

at first i had difficulty travelling the land and i depended upon the spell Clairvoyance but equipping the spell gets tedious even with hotkey since i play melee character. after a awhile i got used to the 3D map and realized i dont need to actually follow paths and i found more landmarks offroad. i think thats what bethesda aims for, us adventuring out without a "map". we get raw adventuring but we cant actually get lost as we can just refer to the 3d map to find nearest city's general direction. so for me, it doesnt really break immersion. running off and on the road is quite fun too :D Beast Form sprinting FTW.
