Riggswolfe Posted November 12, 2011 Posted November 12, 2011 I got the ability to make steel items in smithing but so far no forge I go to even shows the option. Has anyone played with it and managed to make any steel items?
galgat Posted November 12, 2011 Posted November 12, 2011 I got the ability to make steel items in smithing but so far no forge I go to even shows the option. Has anyone played with it and managed to make any steel items? yes i have made a few things, and improved my armor and weapons a little. that first quest i got from the black smith let me make a few items, a dagger, and helmet..
sora3 Posted November 12, 2011 Posted November 12, 2011 I made like my Steel Armour, my Imperial armour and as well a crapload of Steel weapons. For the Steel option to appear, you need to have the perk to create Steel items.
Kodiak Posted November 12, 2011 Posted November 12, 2011 In addition to the perk, remember that you will need an array of supplies to craft complex steel equipment. The Steel brestplate took several Steel ingots, leathers strips and another component. Just about everything you can craft will require some non-metal material. Problem I'm having is how to smelt down ore to ingots. I dont see an option at the forge but I don't see a smelting device either.
DBSS99 Posted November 12, 2011 Posted November 12, 2011 I think in some of the drewmer ruins there are smelting Furnaces and also in the Major cities.
polluxval Posted November 12, 2011 Posted November 12, 2011 there is a smelting in whiterun just behind the smith.

I guess I'm bugged. It's a Bethesda game.
ragindude Posted November 12, 2011 Posted November 12, 2011 I made the leather armor as soon as I could and I kept it until the elven stuff showed up in merchant inventory, I saved a lot of money early game. Plus hunting for leather was sooo cool. ps: mudcrabs, those mofo got buffed since the last game XD
HanPL Posted November 12, 2011 Posted November 12, 2011 So far Smith lev 31 Dwarven armors are pretty cool and have decent armor, and with enchanting they are even better. I'm curious how Orc and Deadric armors will look like @ragindude. Yea they got buffed a lot
Med111 Posted November 12, 2011 Posted November 12, 2011 I'm curious how Orc and Deadric armors will look like Daedric looks badass.
Zeroda Posted November 12, 2011 Posted November 12, 2011 Oh Oh, I'm already at Orcish armor and I'll show you here:
dysfunkshunal Posted November 12, 2011 Posted November 12, 2011 I am only level 10 right now, but as far as smithing goes I only smithed leather and iron objects. As others have mentioned, all the options of items you can smith will be greyed out if you are missing the components (ingots, leather strips, etc.) at the bottom right of the screen. I'm assuming if you don't see it in the list it is because you can't smith it at all because it's not something you've seen yet. And I guess they don't want to tell you about an item you don't even know exists!
Riggswolfe Posted November 13, 2011 Author Posted November 13, 2011 Time to fess up. I was playing late and thought I took the perk when I actually didn't. I took the perk on my next level up and am now in superior steel armor. Oh, and broke from buying materials.
marrow12 Posted November 13, 2011 Posted November 13, 2011 Sooo..anyone else have trouble finding veins to mine ore?
Lumpyhead Posted November 13, 2011 Posted November 13, 2011 Sooo..anyone else have trouble finding veins to mine ore? yes, i have only found one place that had only around 3 ore veins
Mashi Posted November 13, 2011 Posted November 13, 2011 Sooo..anyone else have trouble finding veins to mine ore? Not really. Look for mines, they're the best place. Also rock out-crops, and hillside drops. They're out there, once you see your first nodes in a cluster you'll see them everywhere. Also, transmute tomes help especially if you need a specific material.
Kodiak Posted November 13, 2011 Posted November 13, 2011 Yea the viens are hard to see, but they are out there. Hit a silver vien not long ago....not that I can do anything with the damn stuff yet, but I hit it! The only thing I found dissapointing so far with smithing is that by time you get around to making s full set of something, you'll end up finding it somewhere. I broke my ass and coin purse on gathering the mats for a steel set and in the very next dungeon I'm showered with Steel gear and silver weapons, even a sky steel greatsword. I stopped buying ore and just smelt what I find or use what I steal to turn a profit. Unless you really grind up the skill early, before reaching say L10, then its effects are quickly muted by loot drops. but...if you can grind it up and pull off some steel early on, your good to go for a good long bit.

I assumed that so I have spammed leather armours to raise my skill for that purpose alone (and make a little extra cash on the side obviously).

I assumed that so I have spammed leather armours to raise my skill for that purpose alone (and make a little extra cash on the side obviously). I don't think so Not positive though. The skill level does act as a prerequesite to perks, but I don't think there is a difference between a steel sword made at a 30 skill and one made at 40. The only way I know that can improve the same steel sword is by tempering it, mkaing it either fine or superiour. Maybe that is attached to skill level, as if a smith of 30 can upgrade to Fine where a 40 can do Superiour? Thats just a guess though. If someone can confirm either way that would be great.

Vyrce Posted November 14, 2011 Posted November 14, 2011 Managed to get my smithing way up really early found a couple of random enchanted enhancement bonus pieces. Legendary level glass armor full set lvl 18. Much fun and death was had.
Endiness Posted November 14, 2011 Posted November 14, 2011 Move around to cancel of the action while mining. Do this after every ore you mine, and you can get three ores instead of two from every vein. Darkwater crossing - Corundom ore Gloombound Mine - Ebony + Iron ore Stony Creek Cave - Moonstone Kolskeggr Mine - Gold ore Left Hand Mine - Iron ore Redbelly Mine (at Shor's Stone) - Ebony Ore
Ryanhabs Posted November 15, 2011 Posted November 15, 2011 Just questioning something here... I have finally maxed my smithing and improved all my gear a few times now. the first was flawless, then some went to legendary, upon enchanting a ring with the smithing enchant, they went to epic, then a little later I also enchanted gloves, helm and necklace to basically add 100% more effectiveness to upgrades, and while the damage / armor rates went sky high (I can craft iron daggers that deal 52 damage) they all stayed legendary. So my assumption is legendary is the top you can upgrade to but with enchants and such you can still keep improving the damage / armor rating, correct?
labrat Posted November 18, 2011 Posted November 18, 2011 Started smithing quite recently. Discovered a real joy making something for yourself in game. Quite a dangerous addiction 'though. Get so proud of your bits and pieces you can't let them go when you need to. You get really reluctant to dump some weapon or armour you've mined, smelted, made and improved...and outgrown. And carrying all the ore and ingots you find and mine means you've no room for any treasure, and all the merchants are skint because you've been hawking your fancy jewelry and weaponry. Smithing and enchanting have definitely taken the lead over alchemy for my PC. Has anyone got into cookery?
wunderbar Posted November 18, 2011 Posted November 18, 2011 labrat, you should try obtaining the houses in Riften and Solitude. They each have two dummies in the basement that can proudly sport your old armor. And no, fuuuck cookin'. All I do is bust locks and make neat armor.
