youngfool Posted May 16, 2022 Posted May 16, 2022 Hi all, I am playing SSE not AE. My game version is 1.6.353.0.8 and SKSE64 2.1.5 rel 6 When I download mod, i keep have to choose between SE or AE and sometimes game version. It seems AE game version are 1.6+ while SE is about 1.5 Question: when choosing mod, do I look at the game version first or SE or AE first? which one takes priority?? I am so confused!!

With the 1.6 anniversary patch there came a lot of engine changes. This made SKSE plugins and some other mods incompatible, hence the community started calling it the Anniversary Edition, while technically it is still the Skyrim Special Edition. Since a lot of mods didn't get updated to this new version yet a lot of players stayed back on version 1.5.x. This is way mods still offer the "old" SE versions together with the "new" AE versions. You need to get the AE versions.

If you can, always refer to the executable or SKSE versions. The entire AE/SE naming convention is a mess and it doesn't seem to be improving. If a mod mentions AE it's basically saying your game version must be 1.6+. And you'll need to get mods and SKSE for that version (luckily for everyone the SKSE website has versions for every iteration of Skyrim and it details for which game and version is clearly so you know what to download). If you're on the latest game patch ignore mods that only support "SE and not AE" or mods that specify a game version below 1.6+ (like 1.5.97 which is the latest SE patch before the AE thing).

I've never updated and I'm still using 1.5.97, it just perpetually hangs on "Update required" in Steam. All the fun mods are on SE.
