So one day bethesda released a new game called skyriom and i was extatic. I love the elder scrolls and i bought the game at release.

But when i began playing it i realized something was wrong; randomly, if i look in a specific direction, load into a new cell, or even start moving, the game drops to any where from 10fps to as bad as 2fps! This can happen at any time, from right at startup to as long as an hour in and there is no way to fix it other than exiting the game and relaunching. this has happened since the game was launched and i was apparantly wrong to think that the developers would ever fix the issue dispite having sent them info on this. Actually, i think it might be because of steam, since my friend who pirated the game never had the issue untill he bought a legit copy.

I have looked in many places to find an answer to this so hopefully my search can end here.

If it helps, my machine has an i7 processor, a gtx465 card, and 18gigs of ram.

Get autohotkey and set skyrim to widowed mode. Also turning down shadows can add 20fps.

original fps is not an issue as befor this happens i have at least 60, nor is load order as this happens with vanilla skyrim and adding mods hasn't exacerbated the issue.

I tried to run it in windowed mode as you suggested Chessur. It actually made it a little worse.

well, that fps booster actually makes things quite a bit worse. it makes the game start with reduced fps. im going to try the second thing now.

Strange that you have a high-end machine for which to play Skyrim and yet you still run into trouble.

Are you sure that you have your PC drivers properly updated first?

if you are using the geforce 320.49 just revert to a old one, belive got some problems with that new driver. Its beta yet

i've got that nvidia program that auto checks for updates every day so i hope it is up to date. And as this has been happening for years, reverting to an older driver won't help. I actually thought there may be something wrong with my machine but Skyrim is the only game i have issues with that aren't caused by sloppy programing, unfinished code, and a failure of a game engine. (im looking at you sots 2)

Come to think of it now, are there drivers for things other than video cards and periferals like mice that would be affecting this?

well, neither the fps booster nor the other ini fix actually worked. in fact both of them made the problem MUCH worse and seems to have permanently damaged the game. does anyone have any other suggestions?

XD Every fix messes up your game so to fix the game you have to ruin it. Put it on ultra and bash random buttons.

You know what's really sad? i was always running it on ultra, but i did bash random buttons just out of shear frustration today and... it actually lessened the issue for a few minutes.

There's gotta be something wrong between steam's multiple drm locks interacting with either my hardware or software. I see no reason for any of this especially since i can run things like crysis so easily that my machine doesn't even get warm.

Thankx for trying to help mad.

You could pirate the game just to see the difference as your friend did. Try Tes5edit and BOSS.

Are you using ENB's and running it in the highest possible resolution? Try not using any ENB's, and lower the res.

Another question. It might sound stupid, but when was the last time you cleaned the fans and heat sinks in your PC?

Heat can effect fps? Makes sense....................

iv'e never truly cleaned them. Though because my heat sink is nearly as big as my head i have gotten away with using canned air to blow of the dust. But the fans did actually need a bit of a rubbing just now.

I don't even know what an ENB is... though when i did try lowering resolutions and graphics settings a never noticed an increase in performance.
