Eyes & Brows Bug With High Poly Head?

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Hello, I installed the mod "High Poly Head" v1.4 from Vector Plexus and now I am experiencing the bugs listed below and shown in the images and video below when I try to create a new character on a new game, as well as when I edit a character on an old save. I am not using any head presets, so there's no sculpt data.

Also, I am using Expressive Facegen Morphs and both Expressive Facial Animations. So when installing the head mod I selected all 3 of those options. I even tried not selecting those options and removing all 3 Expressive mods. I also tried installing the head without the Expressive options but keeping the Expressive mods active. None solved the problem. I only bring up EFM and EFA so I'm not told that they could be an issue, I already ruled them out.

I've been trying to fix this issue for hours so I can make my character with a good head but I can't figure out what's going wrong? Can anyone help?

My full modlist is here: So sorry for the long lists.

Here is a text description of the bugs:

  1. The brows sometimes clip into the forehead. (This has been fixed by downloading HPH patches for my brow mods.)
  2. On most eye shapes the eyeballs clip through the skin and don't align in the sockets. (Fixed by exiting and then re-entering Racemenu while using the broken eye type.)
  3. On some eye shapes the eyeball is cut in half and you can see into the socket. (Also fixed by exiting and then re-entering Racemenu while using the broken eye type.)
  4. On most eye shapes the lashes don't align and clip through the skin. (Fixed by installing the correct version of EFM (Full version, not the Racemenu plugin.) and reinstalling HPH with the EFM option.)

And here are 5 pictures of the bug:

And here's a video:

These bugs are not experienced with the vanilla low poly head, even when using Expressive Morphs and Animations. Only when installing High Poly Head and using it do these problems start.

I haven't updated to high poly yet, but as I recall from reading about the update, you need to swap out brows for high poly variants

Thanks so much! This solved my brow issue. Now I wish I could figure out the eyes...

huh, idk...if you're referring to the very end when you suddenly lose your brows, it looks like you spent too much time fiddling around in racemenu and the applet choked. That sort of thing happens to me when I load too many presets during a single racemenu "session". But I don't see anything specifically "wrong" about your eyes (not choices I'd make but otherwise, they don't' seem broken in any way)

The eyes *are a bit "dead" though, like paper cartoon eyes. very little depth. I've noticed that with a  lot of high poly preset designs. Is that intentional? (ie one of those Japanese anime things)

Does this look like nothing is wrong with my eyes?

If you actually watch the video you'll see that at the beginning I'm not using the High Poly Head which is why the eyes look fine, it's only when I switch the HPH (Face Part 3) that the eye types break (0:38). It's hard to tell with the face paint though, I should have removed it, so watch when I load a preset (without paint) and go through the eye types (1:03). It's especially apparent with the elf style eyes.

The depthless eyes are probably because I had xrayys hd eye normal map on there. Or maybe it was an eye texture mod. It wasn't intentional, I'm still experimenting with mods, trying to find what's good.

None of the presets I loaded are ones I want to actually play on. I'm trying to make a new character from scratch, I haven't even started yet, so I'm not overloading the game by importing presets too many times because I haven't made anything worth saving or importing. (Except the last preset but that one doesn't use HPH so I'm not going to be importing it for actual use.)

I didn't realize you weren't using the HPH head at first so now I can see where (video) you switch, is where I start seeing screwed up features.

I can't view those two images, I get an access denied page (all too often with imgur content for some reason), so I'll have to take your word for it  on them, but I did see wierdness about 2 minutes into you video and til the end. I really don't know what's going on there. sorry. best of luck.

I guess the next thing I should do is try again with only HPH and ASLAL. That will rule out the HPH mod itself being bugged and indicate that something else in my load order that I'm not seeing is causing problems.

Alright, just tried it with only USSEP, XPMSE, RaceMenu, HPH, and ASLAL. Still having the broken eyes issue... Guess its the HPH mod itself. I'll post the issue on the mod page I guess.

Ironically enough (or if it works or you, serendipitously), I saw this pop up on the Nexus in new mods this evening when i was doing my daily browse of new entries. Give it a look. ~maybe it'll help.

Improved Eye Model

https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/59099

excerpt from description:

-  Support for multiple high poly head and expression mods such as COTR and EFA Male/Female as well as Racemenu and Enhanced Character Edit.
Adds a few standalone eyes as well, some of which are animated, available to all races minus beasts.

I saw that too and downloaded it. Sadly, it didn't help. I still had the eye issues only this time most of them weren't as bad, still bad though. ?

Did you change to the HP head in RaceMenu?

Yes... It's in the video. And I said that the vanilla head doesn't have problems.

Okay, so was the preset made with the HP head?

I just checked and it wasn't. But that doesn't matter because the eyes types are still broken even without loading a saved preset. I just also tried loading a preset that did have the HPH but that didn't do anything either, eyes types were still broke.

Then you need to go over what you did when installing HP Head and the EFA stuff. As I recall there are extra steps required to get everything using the HP head.

As stated in the original post, I already ruled out the Expressive mods as being the cause of the issue. I still get the broken eye types even without the Expressive mods.

I'll still answer your question though. I installed the latest full version of EFM, and the latest versions of both EFA mods.

When installing HPH v1.4 the options I chose in the installer are:

  • BSA Only (I tried BSA + Loose as well)
  • Special Edition
  • EFM (I tried vanilla as well)
  • EFA (Male) & EFA (Female) (I tried it without them too)
  • Vampire Head Fix
  • Symmetrical Eyes (Female)

I just tried it again. This time only using the mods HPH v1.4 and RaceMenu v0.4.16. The HPH installer options I chose this time are:

  • BSA Only (I tried BSA + Loose as well)
  • Special Edition
  • Vanilla

Eye's were still bugged. Here's another video: https://youtu.be/z3b9rFSG-LY

The first half shows that the eye types are broken with the HPH, the second half shows that the eye types are not broken with the default head.

Because I wasn't using ASLAL, and didn't want to go through the whole into sequence, I just went to the QASmoke cell and then opened RaceMenu there. I tried the eye types on both male and female and most of them were still broken, some easier to see than others. Pay attention to the eye texture, it often gets cut. If you're having trouble seeing it, slowing down the playback and going full screen might help.

Unfortunately the VP site is currently down so I can't check but as I said I seem to recall that there are extra steps needed if you want the HP head on more than just your PC.

Yeah, I saw that too. I'm not worried about NPCs though, I just want it on my PC.

POTENTIAL SOLUTION (from vectorplexus): eye mesh may have flickering/rendering issue after switching to high poly head.  can be fixed by closing RaceMenu and opening it again.

I was running into the eye bug myself and tested this, it worked for me. I made a basic character with HP head + one of the more problematic eye shapes then saved and closed the game. After loading the character up the eyes seemed to be rendering correctly. I tested ~showracemenu and changing eye shape/sliders seemed to be rendering correctly.

The OP has probably seen the same info but I figured I would leave a post for anyone else who runs into this thread.

I have to make a confession, I dismissed the Racemenu exit and re-entry method of solving the eye type broken texture issue because it didn't always work, and for some reason I also assumed that the issues with the eye types and lashes were connected, so in my mind I figured that if the Racemenu exit and re-entry didn't solve both problems than it wasn't valid. But after trying that method again I realized that I shouldn't have dismissed it so quickly because it does fix the eye types, but only the eye types. It doesn't fix the misaligned and clipping eyelashes sadly.

But, when using the eye colors from Improved Eye Model I found that their lashes are perfectly aligned and don't clip into the skin. The mod isn't the solution though because I'm experiencing some problems with it too even though I installed it correctly, and I know it's correctly installed because I triple checked. My problems with Improved Eye Model are:

  1. When blinking, eyelashes clip and stretch really badly
  2. Eyes are small and slightly cross-eyed
  3. Eye movement looks bad

Here are pics:

https://i.ibb.co/jrgd8Kr/Screen-Shot84.jpg (IEM blinking)
https://i.ibb.co/4R26Psj/Screen-Shot85.jpg (IEM eye cross-eyed)
https://i.ibb.co/9hctnsf/Screen-Shot86.jpg (regular eye misaligned eyelash)

I also found that when I removed EFM and reinstalled HPH and IEM without the EFM options, the eyes from IEM no longer looked cross-eyed (but that could be placebo), but the lashes during blinking were still broken. The lashes from the vanilla eye colors were mostly aligned now too, only getting weird on elf eye types and like 2 or 3 human eye types. This was then solved by removing IEM.

So for some reason, mods that change the eye meshes or morphs (idk which, maybe both) cause the eyelashes to be misaligned and clip into the skin. This was confirmed when I tried the game again without IEM but with EFM again.

I'm thinking about just playing without EFM and IEM, and just relying on HPH to make my head look high quality.

I wish I could get the 3 mods to work together though without breaking eye lashes... Every other problem now has a solution. (Except ofc for the IEM bugs I just now listed in this reply. I can live without IEM though.)

Final update and the solution to normal eyelash misalignment:

I feel so stupid...

I searched for Expressive Facegen Morphs in MO's Downloads tab and found that I had installed the Racemenu plugin version of EFM....... Aparently, back when EFM was first released I installed the Racemenu plugin version and named the mod "Expressive Facegen Morphs SE", then forgot about it. So all this time I was thinking I had the full version when in reality I did not and I never thought to check on it until now.

So, after downloading and installing the full version and reinstalling HPH with the EFM option, all my normal eyelashes are fine, even elf eyelashes.

I also took a look at IEM's mod page to see if there was anything mentioned about blinking and I saw that other people are experiencing the same issue as me. Some possible causes that were mentioned are Conditional Expressions, MFG Fix, and High Poly Head, but I didn't see anything concrete in my quick search. The mod author said that they were trying to fix it though.

Hey, I was reading this thread regarding the same eye glitch issue in hph. While I was looking for IEM in nexus I found this https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/14464 and similar mods like this. I did install it and it seems the issue is fixed for me.

"Invisibility and Eyes Mesh Fix" fixes an issue I was not having. Also a fix for that issue is already included in IEM.
